A Message from Jumaane

Dear Friends, I hope everyone is enjoying fall! As the leaves turn, our students have gotten into the swing of another school year. We must rededicate ourselves to support their studies in the classroom and at home as well. Education is the foundation on which we build a safe place for young people to learn and grow. The engine driving that vision is our local small businesses, and lately we have been stepping up our efforts to show them some love! My business corridor forums are connecting them with public and private resources to maximize their potential and to identify areas of improvement. I am committed to following up on these issues, particularly advancing our MWBEs. As always, I urge you to be involved! The latest GET ACTIVE! focuses on participatory budgeting; that is just one of the many opportunities in our community. Our office is happy to help you find your avenue for activism! The latest One-on-One with Council Member Williams is actually a report from ABC Eyewitness News, catching up on some exciting developments with the Foster Avenue Hotel project. Enjoy! Sincerely,

Update from City Hall

Council Member Williams is pursuing a robust legislative agenda this fall, including legislation focusing on hotel development, catch basins, minority and women-owned business enterprises (MWBEs) and charter reform. Two of his initiatives have received particular attention of late after the City Council held hearings pertaining to his bills. On October 10th, the Committee on Public Safety considered the Community Safety Act, a package of bills led by Council Member Williams and sponsored by a bipartisan majority of his colleagues. The legislation would expand biasbased profiling protections, direct NYPD officers to record express consent for searches, institute a "business card" for distribution when an individual is stopped for questioning and create an Inspector General to oversee polices and procedures of the NYPD; the latter effort has been co-championed by Council Member Brad Lander. This effort to tackle discrimination and institute true accountability is the first meaningful reform of the NYPD's approach to policing in a generation, impacting the misuse of policies such as stop, question and frisk and improving relations with historically disenfranchised communities. On October 15th, the Committee on Governmental Operations heard a series of bills aimed at improving the voting process. This includes Council Member Williams Intro 760, which has the sponsorship of a bipartisan supermajority of his colleagues, to require the Board of Elections to report the number of New Yorkers who completed voter registration forms while seeking city services, disaggregated by city agency. The goal is to make government more efficient in its efforts to maximize the number of people participating in elections. Council Member Williams looks forward to the passage of these key measures.

JUMAANE IN THE NEWS

On September 30th, Council Member Williams hosted the producers of Brooklyn Castle for a screening of their film at a free movie night held at Glenwood Playground.

Steve Yamin, President of Nieuw Amersfort Community Association

1) What work do you do in the 45th?

Heroes of the 45th

I am the President of the Nieuw Amersfort Community Association located in the Flatlands section of the district. Our area extends from Avenue H to Kings Highway and from Flatbush Avenue to Troy Avenue in the east. I run our monthly meetings and provide valuable information of which our community should be aware. 2) Why did you decide to get involved in the community?

On September 24th, Council Member Williams attended the ribbon cutting ceremony for the Barclays Center; he stated that all must fully commit to seeing the creation of promised affordable housing and good jobs.

The community needed a focal point to air their concerns. We also needed a strong base to approach the electorate and city departments in order to maintain a high quality of life in this primarily homeowner neighborhood. I hope I am guiding the community through various concerns to keep our neighborhood one of the finest in Brooklyn. 3) Tell me a valuable experience you had in your service. One of the best experiences as President is to acquire important speakers for our monthly meetings, to keep our neighbors well informed with political issues, health issues, safety information, and current events in Brooklyn. 4) How can people get involved?

We hold meetings every fourth Tuesday of the month at 8:00 PM from September to June at St.Pauls Lutheran Church, located on the corner of Avenue J and East 40th Street. We have special projects and volunteers are always needed.

On September 6th, Council Member Williams joined Congressman Eliot Engel and other New York Democrats at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, North Carolina to help re-elect President Barack Obama.

GET ACTIVE!
We are in the midst of the second year of participatory budgeting! Last year, residents came up with ideas on which the 45 th District voted to spend over $1 million of Council Member Williams capital budget. This is a great exercise in local democracy and community empowerment. There are two upcoming opportunities to be heard in this process. On October 25th from 6:30 PM until 8:30 PM, there will be a neighborhood assembly at Catherine McAuley High School, located at 710 East 37th Street. Additionally, project proposals can now be submitted via e-mail to mwaterman@council.nyc.gov until October 31st. Your money, your voice, your vote!
