Dear Friends, I hope everyone is enjoying fall! As the leaves turn, our students have gotten into the swing of another school year. We must rededicate ourselves to support their studies in the classroom and at home as well. Education is the foundation on which we build a safe place for young people to learn and grow. The engine driving that vision is our local small businesses, and lately we have been stepping up our efforts to show them some love! My business corridor forums are connecting them with public and private resources to maximize their potential and to identify areas of improvement. I am committed to following up on these issues, particularly advancing our MWBEs. As always, I urge you to be involved! The latest GET ACTIVE! focuses on participatory budgeting; that is just one of the many opportunities in our community. Our office is happy to help you find your avenue for activism! The latest One-on-One with Council Member Williams is actually a report from ABC Eyewitness News, catching up on some exciting developments with the Foster Avenue Hotel project. Enjoy! Sincerely,
On October 14th, Council Member Jumaane D. Williams joined Council Member Letitia James in celebrating the honorees of the 15th annual Reel Sisters of the Diaspora Film Festival and Lecture Series.
On September 30th, Council Member Williams hosted the producers of Brooklyn Castle for a screening of their film at a free movie night held at Glenwood Playground.
I am the President of the Nieuw Amersfort Community Association located in the Flatlands section of the district. Our area extends from Avenue H to Kings Highway and from Flatbush Avenue to Troy Avenue in the east. I run our monthly meetings and provide valuable information of which our community should be aware. 2) Why did you decide to get involved in the community?
On September 24th, Council Member Williams attended the ribbon cutting ceremony for the Barclays Center; he stated that all must fully commit to seeing the creation of promised affordable housing and good jobs.
The community needed a focal point to air their concerns. We also needed a strong base to approach the electorate and city departments in order to maintain a high quality of life in this primarily homeowner neighborhood. I hope I am guiding the community through various concerns to keep our neighborhood one of the finest in Brooklyn. 3) Tell me a valuable experience you had in your service. One of the best experiences as President is to acquire important speakers for our monthly meetings, to keep our neighbors well informed with political issues, health issues, safety information, and current events in Brooklyn. 4) How can people get involved?
We hold meetings every fourth Tuesday of the month at 8:00 PM from September to June at St.Pauls Lutheran Church, located on the corner of Avenue J and East 40th Street. We have special projects and volunteers are always needed.
On September 6th, Council Member Williams joined Congressman Eliot Engel and other New York Democrats at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, North Carolina to help re-elect President Barack Obama.
GET ACTIVE!
We are in the midst of the second year of participatory budgeting! Last year, residents came up with ideas on which the 45 th District voted to spend over $1 million of Council Member Williams capital budget. This is a great exercise in local democracy and community empowerment. There are two upcoming opportunities to be heard in this process. On October 25th from 6:30 PM until 8:30 PM, there will be a neighborhood assembly at Catherine McAuley High School, located at 710 East 37th Street. Additionally, project proposals can now be submitted via e-mail to mwaterman@council.nyc.gov until October 31st. Your money, your voice, your vote!
