Elective Policy Students have nine (9) weeks of selective time during the Advanced Clinical Experience of the Second

100 Weeks. Selectives are electives chosen from a group of approved specialty and sub-specialty rotations within the North Shore-LIJ Health System. Students must review their selective plans with their Society Master during the semester prior to beginning the Second 100 Weeks and have their plans approved by the Dean for Academic Affairs. Students have sixteen (16) weeks of required elective time during Preparation for Residency of the Second 100 Weeks. These elective rotations may occur within the North Shore-LIJ Health System, at other LCME-accredited medical schools, or at other national and/or international locations, provided the elective has clear goals and objectives, a School of Medicine faculty preceptor, and is approved by the Dean for Academic Affairs. A maximum of eight (8) elective weeks can be taken within the same specialty area. Students are encouraged to use at least half of their elective time in the final year of training to pursue interests outside of their chosen specialty. Students are required to review their elective plans at least once with their Society Master during the Advanced Clinical Experience of the Second 100 Weeks, and to have their plans approved by the Dean for Academic Affairs prior to beginning Preparation for Residency. The process of enrollment in electives is coordinated through the Office of the Registrar, and compliance with this policy is monitored by the Assistant Dean for the Advanced Clinical Experience.
