com @ecosistema ecosistema urbano is a Madrid based group of architects and urban designers operating within the fields of urbanism, architecture, engineering and sociology. We define our approach as urban social design by which we understand the design of environments, spaces and dynamics in order to improve selforganization of citizens, social interaction within communities and their relationship with the environment. We have used this philosophy to design and implement projects in Norway, Denmark, Spain, Italy, France and China.
ten THINGS WE HAVE LEARNED FROM THE CITY
one TAKE CARE FOR THE PUBLIC
since we believe the concept of the city is completely linked to the creation of public space.
eight REACTIVATE THE EXISTING
as an alternative to uncontrolled expansion
two DEVELOP CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM
as an optimistic approach to existing reality in order to bring up creative solutions
nine TAKE ACCOUNT OF THE INTANGIBLE
using new technologies as a mechanism to create complexity
three RELY ON LOW-COST
to make big projects with less resources
ten KEEP POSITIVE
to be able to push ahead reality
four BRING INSTANT CHANGE THROUGH URBAN ACTIONS
we believe everything is architecture, small actions provoke huge reactions and everything is connected

Municipality of Rivas Vaciamadrid Francisco Romero 2009/2010 Built Ecological reconfiguration of an old industrial site in a new public space Direction of the experimental urban strategy, design and construction.
Transformation of a faceless site in Madrid’s urban sprawl, surrounded by industry and heavy traffic transportation infrastructures, into a public space for social interaction providing a building for childcare. The project “Plaza Ecopolis” aims to incorporate the idea of sustainability into daily life, reducting the energy consumption by matters of design, but also raising people’s awareness of their own consumption behaviour. It is Ecosistema Urbano’s belief that projects as “Plaza Ecopolis” are a way to impart awareness for sustainability to children who in consequence will become responsible adults. The Ecopolis Plaza project has the highest eco-label (A grade) of Spanish law. The building extends its limits into the plaza and become more transparent to the public. The sewage system, bassed on a natural process, ends into a lagoon where all the waste water from the building is naturally purified by macrophyte plants. The purified water is stored under the ground within a gravel tank and it is used for all the irrigation needs of the plaza, this artificial landscape emulates a natural riverbank. All this is surrounded by an artificial topography created as an enclosure and protection filter from the aggressive industrial environment.

Scope: [ecosistema urbano] was commissioned to direct the process from competition to construction. Air Tree is a firm commitment from the city of Madrid for the public space understood as support to citizenship, producing a kaleidoscopic image of a living city. It is conceived as a technological furniture, being used not only contemplative but interactive as well as energy self-sufficient. The Air Tree, with different technical layers, can be configured as a stand outside opaque, translucent, transparent, light, etc. Different projection textile products allow an unlimited combination of scenarios. At the same time it will be connected by sensors, real time, with the climatic conditions of the city of Shanghai, adopting at all times the physical configuration and optimal energy to generate the necessary conditions for thermal comfort. This space will serve not only as a prelude for visitors to the pavilion, but also a fun place to relax and rest in the Expo. It will also be a virtual node connectivity Madrid-Shanghai, where you can receive information or be a spectator of activities taking place in real time in both cities. The aim is to bring both cultures, create curiosity, interest and expectation. Air Tree is a window through which overlook Madrid and Shanghai to look at the other side.

Municipality of Madrid, EMVS Juan Jose de Gracia 2004-2007 Built Ecological Boulevard for a socially innovative public space. 550x50m,three air trees and a new strategy to reconfigure the periphery of cities. [ecosistema urbano] won a design competition for a new strategy in a newly created neighborhood in Madrid. Ecosistema Urbano directed the process from competition to construction.
The whole proposal for the eco-boulevard in Vallecas can be defined as an urban recycling operation consisting of the following actions: insertion of an air tree-social dynamizer, over an existing urbanization area, densification of existing alignment trees and reduction and asymmetric arrangement of wheeled traffic circulation. Superficial interventions reconfiguring the existing urbanization (perforations, fillings, paint, etc.) that defaces the executed kerb development. Three pavilions and trees acting as air carriers are open to multiple activities selected by users. Installed in the non-city as temporary prostheses, will be used only until the tare down and conditioning climate has been corrected. Allow sufficient time, these devices should be removed and remain clear as the old enclosures in the forest.

Can a physical space emulate the conditions that provide the exchange and interaction that occurs between users of the Web? With Gran Vía Commons, based on Gran Vía street in Madrid, we created the prototype of an innovative OPERATIVE SYSTEM that could be applied to any city in the world. The main objective is to create a cultural landscape with the same innovative self-organizing processes and exchange generated on the Internet. A common and shared landscape, where every citizen can replicate the endless iniciatives of the network, starting this time from the physical space. What if each user of the Gran Vía was a potential trigger of processes and collective creation dynamics? What if the Gran Vía return to be an urban space where citizens live a unique experience?

Urban action completed with students from the Alcala school of Architecture. For the action we choose an empty and dusty site adjacent to an area declared as a World Heritage zone, and soon we discovered that this area had an urban classification as a green space. However, this space was being used as a big parking area that has dominated the neighbourhood. 150 phone calls, 450 hours of work, 20 tons of recycled asphalt, 5 elm trees planted by a local resident, 7 privets, 3 ginkgo trees, 50m2 of aromatic shrubs, 10 lorry tyres, 10 litres of paint, 2 Town Council benches, 20 parkings spaces eliminated...A park in 5 days! This park represents the seed of public space for the neighbourhood.
TEMPORARY BEACH ON THE MOON SQUARE
Client: neighbourhood Asociation Contact: Jordi Gordon Date: 2006 Status: Done. Programme: Urban intervention to improve the public space of downtown Madrid Scope: Design, strategy management and implementation. In contrast to traditional problem-solving methods for reactivating degraded public spaces in historical centers, we believe another form of intervention is possible - one without spending vast amounts of money, time, and energy. We focus on low-cost actions capable of generating responses from residents, in effect obtaining a system of selfproduced revitalization where the citizen plays an active role in the creation of public space. This proposal demonstrates new notions of neighbourhood connectivity, developped to positively affect the everyday life through the creation of a new, temporary urban scene (Beach on the Moon square).
THE CITY AS A PLAYGROUND
Client: Intermediae Matadero Contact: +34 915 177 309 Date: 2009 Status: Done. Programme: Participation in the project ALTERPOLIS curated by Arturo Franco. Scope: Design, strategy management and implementation.
Learning from kids to created a playful urban environment. Is it utopic to turn the city into a field of experimentation and play? Is it possible to integrate the different areas that make up the public space avoiding the fragmentation affecting contemporary cities? From our point of view the contemporary city should be rethought as a transformation of existing reality around us rather than a new reality to build from scratch. We understand that this transformation should operate essentially from the public space. It is necessary to reclaim the public space by those who make a more unprejudiced and free use of it: children. Just looking through child eyes we will be able to rediscover the city and transform it from a structural and not merely aesthetic point of view.

The site is occupied by the municipal landfill, currently under ecological rehabilitation, a process that will take several years to consolidate. We take this temporary circumstance as leit motif of the project, understanding that temporal processes are very close to architecture. We occupy the site for a limited period of time. The new topography generates rings of different sizes whose perimeter holds buildings in continuity with the new landscape, dissolving the boundaries between natural and artificial.
