Week 4 Day 3: Checkpoint: Developing a Thesis Statement

Name

Thesis Statement: The negative physical and psychological effects mass media of Hollywood has on men and women of the American society.

Question: How do you plan to support your thesis with compelling arguments and counterarguments? I plan on supporting my thesis by addressing the mental issues society has developed due to the “Hollywood” look media repeatedly shows. Such disorders include depression and dissatisfaction. People, especially women think they should look like the celebrity’s, and models they see on TV on a daily basis. If they do not look like their idols, they think they are unattractive, unsuccessful and selfconscious of their bodies. They will become depressed and unhappy with the way their bodies look and will find any flaw even if there are none. Another point I will support is eating disorders. With dissatisfaction of their bodies, women and men alike will become anorexic or bulimic to achieve the weight loss they crave further injuring their bodies. Others will push themselves to have the legs or the abs of their favorite stars and the man or woman will become obsessed. I plan on supporting my thesis by stating all the issues, mental and physical, media has on society. I plan on counter arguing by letting people know that America is a country of obesity. We need to be aware that there are other people out there with weight issues. Americans need to improve their health, not because media says we should look like a star but because we need to be healthier. We need to breathe, walk, and run easier. We need to extend our lives for ourselves and family. We should not become what media says we should. American’s need to live and eat healthier with exercise for ourselves! I will be conducting much research and I will personally ask family members and friends how they perceive their bodies and why.

**Please let me know if I need to rephrase my statement or any arguments. **
