5- To what extent does the question of health lead to failure at college?

How far can the college authorities with their medical officers help students in such cases? How does health influence studies of college boys? According to the author, mental and physical health plays an important role in the educational performance of a student. The writer found many boys who were the victim of psychological problems, sleeping sickness and hidden physical diseases. Because of these ailments, boys cannot perform properly in their studies and fail to pass college examination. When such a student is absorbing too much poison through his bad tonsils or has developed nervous habits, he cannot show satisfactory results, because he cannot concentrate fully on his studies due to mental or physical weakness. The writer, therefore, suggests that every college must have health services to find out such cases. Regular medical checkups of students must be made of all low-performing students. College administration, teaching faculty and parents must cooperate mutually to stop failure due to bad health. 6- What place would you accord to sportsmen in college? Undoubtedly, sports, literary activities and extra-curricular activities are an important part of college life but it is not the main objective of college life. The purpose of such activities is to support college life and make that interesting for students so that the students may give full attention to their studies. Besides, it develops in them better personal traits. However, to join college for the sack of sports and leave the main purpose of college, i.e. studies, is totally wrong. All those students who lack concentration on studies and take more interests in sports and athletics must be asked to become professional sportsmen and leave college, because a double-minded state is more harmful for them and they could not pass through college because of lesser interest. 7- There are some students who join college for the fun of it. Should they be allowed to stay? According to the writer, some boys come in college without any aim. They have no particular objective in their life and join college just for the sake of fun and enjoyment. May be they are more interested in business than studies. Such students also leave college when they get bored of college life. The writer called them lazy bluffers who mean nothing in their life. Such boys must not be allowed to stay in college because they make disturbance in college atmosphere by their useless habits. They could also harm other students by affecting them. 8- What is the main idea of the essay, "Why Boys Fail In College"? The writer of the essay is an educationist and tells various reasons of failure and suggests solutions to avoid mass failure of students at college level. 9- Which are the two major groups of students who could not pass through college academics? The two major groups of students who could not pass through college academics are those students who seriously try to get through the examination but fail and those students who make no effort to achieve success. 10- What is meant by nervous habits? What nervous habits do the boys adopt during their studies? What is the problem with those boys who try to attempt but fail? Nervous habits indicate that when a boy sits to study, he can not concentrate on his work and start wasting his time in useless things just to avoid studies. For example, when such a boy sits before an open book for studies, he thinks it important to sharpen his pencil first. Because he is not devoted to and sincere with their studies. 11- How these nervous habits can be eradicated? What help can we give to that type of boys? The writer holds the opinion that such nervous habits cannot be uprooted easily. No one else can do any thing for such a student but can only point out the weakness of the boy. It is the boy who himself can get rid of such habits. 12- Who according to the writer adopts nervous habits? What is the result of nervous habits? According to the writer, the first groups of boys, who are bright students and try to do work are, the victim of nervous habits. They waste their time and cannot produce good result. 13- How does mistaken ambition affect the educational achievements of students? It directly affects the academic achievements of students. A boy, who is forcefully admitted to study particular subjects, cannot show good results equivalent to his native ability. He loses interest in his studies because he cannot understand the subject, which is taught to him. 14- How does mistaken ambition, on the part of the parents and boys, leads to the failure of the boys? According to the writer, the parents want their sons to be doctors, engineers or dentists. They do not bother about their inclinations. In most of the cases, the boys have no interest in subjects which their parents have imposed upon them. So, they become utter failure. 15- What is meant by mistaken ambition? Mistaken ambition means that a boy is forcefully asked to study and join field of studies against his liking and interests. 15- How does the writer guide parents of such boys who force their child to join a particular field of studies? He tries to convince parents that this change of subjects would be in the benefit of their child and he would be able to show better results in his studies. 16- Which type of boys does not show real application to their studies? What is meant by real application? How can this problem be solved? There are boys who have done well in schools but fail in college. Why? The writer tells that there are certain boys who are intelligent and had been showing good performance during their school without any serious efforts. They do not know what the real application is. They think that they can pass through the college with the same ease and efforts as they did in school. 17- Who are the most pitiable boys for the writer? The writer tells that there are certain boys who are intelligent and had been showing good performance during their school. For him, they are the most pitiable students because they think that they can pass through the college with the same ease as they did in school. 18- How can the attitude of these "easy going" boys be changed? These “Easy going” boys should realize that college education demands a regular work. They must apply themselves to their studies. Their mindsets can be changed to beware them of the dangers of smooth-sailing in college. A bright boy who cannot work diligently at this level will eventually fail.

The common diseases found in college students are tuberculoses, bad tonsils, sleeping sickness, poor digestion, psychological problems & various nervous habits. 24 What is the thinking of old-fashioned people? The writer tells that old-fashioned people give little importance to physical health. When college examines boys and suggests such parents that their child has hidden disease, they do not pay attention to it. 25- What are the financial pressures on college students? How do they affect boys in college? How a college boy hurts him for earning and sharing the burden of his parents? How does financial pressure lead to the failure of students? The author tells that financial pressure is another important reason of mass failure of students at college level. To earn the entire expense of college, boys have to work long hours after their college. They not only waste their precious time but also have to do a lot of labor. 26- How can the financial pressure be lighted on the students? The foremost duty of parents is to provide sufficient money for their children so as to enable them study. The parents cannot dissociate themselves from their duties. Moreover, the college authorities should allocate sufficient scholarships for such students, who are in financial straits. 27- How can the failure of students due to financial pressure be avoided? A boy shall be expected to earn a part of finance, if he is willing to share the burden of his parents. However, to compel him to do so or to expect full-fledged earning on his part is not advisable because they are the parents, who brought him in this world, It is their responsibility to support him. 28- What is the routine of boys who are earning for themselves? The author tells that due to financial pressure boys have to work long hours after their college. In the morning, they go to college for five or six hours and in the evening, they work from six o’clock in the evening to two o’clock in the morning. 29- How do sports, athletic and literary activities harm the education of children? Shall they be part of college life? Sports, athletic, literary activities and extra-curricular activities are an important part of college life but it is not the main objective of college life, because a double-minded state is more harmful for students. 30- What place would you accord to sportsmen in college? The role of a sport in the life of college students cannot be diminished. Sports make a healthy body in which a healthy mind works. But to focus entirely on sports can be very dangerous for a student. His primary task is to study hard. He can afford sports only as hobby. 31- Who are the lazy bluffers? What does the writer think about them? What does Herbert E. Hawkes think is wise to do with lazy bluffers? According to the writer, some boys have no particular objective in their life and join college just for the sake of fun and enjoyment. The writer called them "lazy bluffers". Such students must not be allowed to stay in college. 32- There are some boys who come to college for the fun of it. Should they be allowed to stay? These kinds of students are non-serious and happy-go-lucky. They just come to college to enjoy its life. They have nothing to do with studies. Having failed, they retire to the cold world. If they have found out that they were wrong, they are to be allowed to study again in college. If not, let them face the cold buffets of reality. 33- In your opinion, the viewpoint of the writer about the students who fail in college is right or wrong. Do you think that the writer has done well in enumerating the cause of student's failure? The causes put forwarded by the writer are very true and are the common reasons of the failure of students at college level. The suggestions and solutions presented by him are also worth considering. If parents, college authorities and teaching faculty keep the mentioned points in view, various cases of failure of students can be avoided.

1- What was the Daiches attitude towards the weekends as a schoolchild? Why did he long for it? The writer says that he was a competent student in his childhood but school life was a burden for him because of the tough competition and hard work in the school. He says getting out of bed early in the morning was a painful and terrible experience. Due to the tiring routine of the whole week, the writer impatiently waited for the weekends so that he would be able to take extra sleep in the morning and as well, would get a break in his exhausting school routine. Therefore, the last class on Friday had a happy flavor for him and Friday night was the best night of week as there were two solid holidays ahead. Saturday night was still pleasant for him but the Sunday night was full of threat of Monday morning.
