Space and Environments: Film Review

Barbarella is a 1968 Franco-Italian science fiction film based on Jean-Claude Forest's French Barbarella comics. It stars Jane Fonda who is told by the president of Earth to retrieve Durand Durand from the planet Tau Ceti. This film does raise a lot of concerns to do with feminism, as there is lack of plot, although she is the main role, shooting guns and fighting crime she is seen aimlessly wondering encountering different men, and having sexual relations, she is seen as an object. As this film was made in the 1960’s sex, drugs alcohol was not unspoken anymore, Vandim expresses this in his movie with the exaggeration of colours and wild landscapes and designs, ‘Everything cherishable about Roger Vadim’s movie emanates from its position as a locus for outrageous late‘60s grooviness its wild, inventive design, its hipster dream of a soundtrack, its date-stamped sexual morals. It’s a self -contained, studio-bound bubble universe. ……It’s a film you don’t so much watch as hallucinate.’ (N.Setchfield:2012) but Puccio argues It is a satire of the love and peace movement of the Sixties, plus a parody of the Bond-type adventures of the era. To these ends, the colours are gaudy and the special effects hopelessly corny. ‘(J.Puccio:2012)

However so, no one fails to admit that the costumes, the scenes and the exaggerated colouring definitely catches your attention. ‘… your eyes will pop at the op art set design, awhirl with psychedelic swirls courtesy of a contraption called an oil wheel projector, then all the rage at hipmusical "happenings" on several continents.’ (B.Wilkins:2012)
