The truth about the remaining dark secret of the Iran-Contra scandal- the United States government's collaboration with drug smugglers. Powderburns is the story of Celerino Castillo III who spent 12 years in the Drug Enforcement Administration. During that time, he built cases against organized drug rings in Manhattan, raided jungle cocaine labs in the Amazon, conducted aerial eradication operations in Guatemala, and assembled and trained anti-narcotics units in several countries. The eerie climax of Agent Castillo's career with the DEA took place in El Salvador. One day, he received a cable from a fellow agent. He was told to investigate possible drug smuggling by Nicaraguan Contras operating from the ilopango air force base. Castillo quickly discovered that Contra pilots were, indeed, smuggling narcotics back into the United States - using the same pilots, planes, and hangars that the Central Intelligence Agency and the National Security Council, under the Direction of Lt. Col. Oliver North, used to maintain their covert supply operation to the Contras.
Some of Castillo's findings
-ALL pilots flying out of Ilopango airfield as part of Oliver North's Contra Resupply operation were listed in DEA databases as narcotics traffickers.
-The pilots were issued visas by the CIA despite being listed as drug traffickers, overriding State Department decision.
-Castillo's supervisors in the DEA ordered him to keep files open even though the investigations were completed because a senate committee was requesting files from the DOJ on Contra and CIA involvement in drug trafficking. Senator Kerry was unable to get Castillo's files during the 1986 hearings because an open file on an open investigation cannot be handed over.
-Most of the Politicians and military officers in Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador and their family members were listed in DEA databases as Narcotics Traffickers. Most of them had US training at School of the America's, Fort Benning Georgia and were on the US Government Payroll. The United States Government continued to work with them and issued visas to them, overriding State Department decision.
-The presence of CIA officials Felix Rodriguez and terrorist Luis Posada Carriles at Ilopango.
-Oliver North and the other CIA officials were listed in multiple files as narcotics traffickers.
-The pilot Marcos Aguado flying out of Ilopango with Salvadoran military credentials was the chief pilot for drug lord Norwin Meneses in Gary Webb's Dark Alliance book and newspaper series. He was also known to fly contra officials and had CIA credentials which he used to smuggle drugs
