The Salvadoran economy continues to benefit from a commitment to free markets and careful fiscal management.
The impact of the civil war and subsequent natural disasters on El Salvador’s economy has been devastating, and
developing the conditions for economic growth remains the country’s greatest challenge. Its traditional agricultural

crops are suffering from low prices and productivity. The number of maquilas (assembly plants) is growing and
providing some jobs, particularly to women, but wages are low and hours are long. The greatest source of economic
assistance is from the estimated 2.5 million Salvadorans who live abroad (primarily in the United States) and send
home approximately $2.8 billion annually.
