Chapter 4 – Blood and Blood Cell Development

Fish Histology and Histopathology

VEN – is caused by erythrocytic necrosis virus (ENV). The disease was
originally named Piscine Erythrocytic Necrosis (PEN). The viruses are tentatively
placed in the Iridoviridae.

Agents of this disease have not been isolated or fully characterized. There are
several morphologically distinct viral particles that cause the disease. Some of
these virusesprobably cause different signs and have distinct host specificities.

Little is known about the epizootiology of VEN. The numerous agents that cause
the disease are manifested as chronic or sunacute infections that may not cause
overt mortality, but debilitate fish so that other pathogens (e.g. Vibrio
anguillarum) or adverse environmental conditions cause death of the fish.

The viruses have been demonstrated in many anadromous and marine species
of fish. The following photos are from experimentally infected coho salmon.
