AMRITA TITARANTI K2210004 This TEFL video told about the way to teach listening using gist and

detail information which is got from the recording. After listened, I personally thought that there were some excesses and a shortage while the teacher taught listening to their students. Excesses 1. The teacher used deductive activity. Get the gist means that the teacher help the students to get the main points from the recording, so it ease the student to get the big line only from their first listen. It was continued with search the detail information, that help the students dig more information deeply. 2. Reinforcement to the students’ answer. The teacher in this video often give reinforcement to every possible answer from her students, it actually help the students to feel be rewarded and not to worry while they try to share their oppinion. 3. Pay attention for students’ need. We watched that the teacher offered the students if they wanted to listen the recording again. In order to make the process of listening skill, that is understanding toward the record that the students listen, to be sensitive in students’ condition is very important. Shortage 1. Unsystematic listening activity. The teacher didn’t use pre-listening and postlistening, so it means that there’s a lack of strategy which should students learn, there’s a missing process of thinking that should students get. Moreover, for the effect of not doing pre-listening and post-listening activity, the listening activity seems like a test only and the students loss the chance to get clearer visualisation in their mind related with the recording. This video not only share the classroom activity, but also share several ways that can teacher use to do while listening activity. All of the ways are related with testing listening, suc as: open-ended questions, multiple choice worksheet, either/or statements, re-tell or summarize listening, determining info from listening, true or false, cloze or gap-fill exercise, checklist, tables or graphs, put pictures or sentences, draw what happening, etc.
