Are You Paying Attention?

1. Observations made 30th October 2012 2. Emersons Green Shopping Centre (Bristol, UK) 3. My wife was worried about me ‘taking so long buying only a few things’ 4. Got some funny looks from passers by and fellow shoppers. 5. Didn’t take any pictures of the Subway store though it smelt great. 6. Much free parking available at this ‘out of town’ complex. 7. Car washing service available (while you shop) 8. Sainsbury's shopping trolleys dominate one side of the car; much busier than the other. 9. Kids Skateboard park also very close to the site. 10. Sainsbury's petrol station also on site. 11. Bus stop – for several buses simultaneously – at the edge of the site.

OBSERVATION needs PRACTICE; PRACTICE makes PERMANENT.

Boots Bristol Emersons Green, 1A The Village, Emerson Way, Bristol BS16 7AE 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Premises full of ‘fragrance’ though sterile Leaning towards self-service tills Hard lino floors and heating turned up High staffing levels at the in store pharmacy Well sign posted in store; racking / items Pay at the rear of the store Thoughts 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. ATM / cash machine outside ATM poorly sign-posted (lacks signage) Staffing light for customer service Expensive Not enough variety of products / items

Brantano UNIT 2A EMERSONS GREEN EMERSONS WAY BRISTOL BS16 7AS 1. Quiet 2. Bland 3. Boring 4. Regimented 5. Clean 6. Hard wood floors 7. Hard to think that this shop was open 8. Poor quality products (my wife) 9. NEVER buy anything in there 10. Naff 

Lidl Emersons Green Emersons Way, Emersons Green Bristol BS16 7AE 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. Handy for olives, sun dried tomatoes & chorizo Trolleys are locked and accessed with a £1 coin Carrier bags are paid (none are free) Consumers often use the discarded cardboard boxes rather than pay for a carrier bag Small range of products that aren’t often refreshed or changed. Messy yet functional WHY NOT SELL THE BRANDED TROLLEY TOKENS IN STORE?

Argos Extra 4b The Village Emerson Way, Emersons Green, Bristol BS16 7AE 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Warehouse type offering; self service promoted Queuing is a norm and expected (especially at Christmas) Wide range of products available through the catalogue Latest catalogues available on either side of the front door Renown for their in-store ordering / purchase process Shop – with wide walk ways – geared towards footfall

Rack full of the latest offers and promotions greets you as you walk through the door

Store Twenty One T/A QS UNIT 5 EMERSON GREEN EMERSON GREEN BRISTOL BS16 7AE 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. No Staff on hand to answer questions Unattended tills (pay here) Drab colour scheme Wanted to get out as soon as I was in More hard floors Once again, drab ONLY store playing music; ELBOW

Peacocks Emerson Way, Emersons Green, Bristol BS16 7AS 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. SERVICE about the payment kiosk rather than PAY HERE (or something of that ilk) Purchased some pillows; lost cost – time will tell about their quality Drab once again Winter colours Non clothing items at the back of the store. Unaware that they had any non-clothing items until I walked to the back of the shop. Clean & sterile though unwelcoming.

Sports Direct Unit 7 The Village, Emerson Way, Emersons Green, Bristol BS16 7AE 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. With one entrance sealed off, watched on potential buyer try to use the closed door Cluttered in side; some low costs items though unsure about the quality Stock out on the sidewalk Three tiers of racking for the clothes in-side; suitable for 15 feet tall men (if they exist) Dark inside and doesn’t seem very fresh Staff miserable and on exit, one failed to even raise a small smile towards me

Sainsbury’s The Village, Emerson Way, Emersons Green, BRISTOL BS16 7AE 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Like a trusty old pair of slippers, OUR local / favourite supermarket Staff on hand; at the tills and around the store Though slightly cold in store; floors are hard, light and generally clean Staff are always engaging and are fully briefed on what is where (within the store) Seasonal offers are close to the front doors Though self service tills exist and have been increased in numbers over the years, more could be done to encourage increased usage and engagement.
