Anthony White: Artist of Emotional Drama and Discovery "Painting is not for me either decorative amusement, or the plastic

invention of felt reality; it must be every time: invention, discovery, revelation." - Max Ernst Anthony White is the 2007 winner of the Marten Bequest Travelling Scholarship which has allowed him to spend time in NY and Vermont. He was a finalist in the Brett Whitely Travelling Art Scholarship in 2006, and the winner of the Art Gallery of NSW’s 2005 Gruner prize for landscape painting. Anthony White engages in drama. The energy and mood of his paintings conspire to create very strong works. They have immediate impact. There is great contrast in the colours; blues and blacks are thrown against yellows, whites and reds. They duel like armies with each other, evoking the positive and negative, chaos and calm. These colours clash along borders where they come face to face; and at other times territory is gained as a fleck, pool or shard of either colour surfacing in the territory of the other. We experience viscerally the artist’s risk taking. As viewers we are drawn into their dynamism. Its hard not to take sides. He gives us an emotional roller coaster and all this is well served by the heavily textured surfaces which act symbolically like the challenges of life itself. It’s a passionate affair. We see the artist seemingly carve his surfaces into submission. He uses strong gestural brushstrokes. When you reflect….. he presents us with confronting tableaux. And like that of international artists Leon Kossoff and Frank Auerbach and locally Idris Murphy, Euan McLeod to whom Anthony draws inspiration at some level, they make a powerful impact on our feelings.
