WildlifeVaasaFestival:holdingback10years
DearFriends&Colleagues Ten years ago and while preparing the establishment of Terranova Nature Centre at the Ostrobothnian museum, an idea was born to arrange an event, which could help the newly established Terranova to gain publicity both in Finland and internationally. After developing this idea with several people for several months, we finally managed to receive preparation funding to make the idea reality. After all these efforts, Wildlife Vaasa Festival concept came to life, which was developed in cooperation with Wildlife Europe festival, a prestigious nature film festival in Sundsvall, Sweden.. Wildlife Europe festival wassetupandsupportedbymostoftheScandinaviantelevisionchannelsand it was managed by mr. Sven Jansson who worked also as our consultant during the early years and with whom we agreedtoalterthefestivalhosting, oneyearinSundsvallandthesecondyearinVaasa; Thus,WildlifeVaasabecamea biennialfestival.Asaresultofourcooperation, thefirstWildlifeVaasafestivalwassuccessfullyorganizedinVaasaat theendofNovember2002,hosting79filmsfrom12countries.However,thingsdidntgoasplaned,becausein2003, Wildlife Europe festival changed its name to Living Europe and moved away from Sundsvall to Helsingborg to organizethereaverybigfestival,backinSeptember2003.andthatfestivalwasitslasteditionbeforerestingin2004. WildlifeVaasaFestivalwascertainlyaffectedbyallthesechangesandafterloosingitspartner, butontheotherhand, itbecametheonlyactivefestivalofitskindinwholeScandinavia.ItmanagedtostayaliveinVaasaandtofinallymove on with its second edition in November 2004, after receiving significant funding and support from the Nordic Cultural Fund, Vaasa City and many other cultural institutions from the Ostrobothnian region, the Finnish State and various foundationsandsponsorsfromaroundFinland.WildlifeVaasafestival2004wassuccessfullyimplementedhosting88 filmsfrom18countriesandwith30delegatesattending,includingrepresentativesfromGreenpeace. Successful implementation in 2004, gave us good reputation and generated further support for the festival in 2005, with the City of Vaasa preparing to celebrate its 400 years anniversary and The Kvarken Archipelago been nominated to become Finlands first Unescos World Heritage natural site. The combination of those two significant events in 2006,createdanopportunitytodevelopourfestivaltoamuchhigherlevelwithWildlifeVaasa2006hosting213films from38countriesand60delegatesfrom13countriesinattendance.Twoyearslaterin2008,thefestivalhitsanother record participation with 265 films from 49 countries and 78 delegates from 15 countries in attendance, launching also a new media education project, a new regional film centre and a new online nature film database out of our film archives. Last time in 2010, the festival broadened its network and cooperation areas worldwide hosting 212 filmsfrom47countrieswith107delegatespresentfrom17countries,includingaChinesedelegationfromBeijingand the City of Ya'an and the ambassadors of the Netherlands and Croatia. Last year in 2011, among other significant events, the festival launched another project aiming to develop cultural tourism packages in our region, in co operation with Korsholm Music festival. This new project initiative, during the last two years, obtained significant financialsupportfrombytheFinnishMinistryofEducationandCultureinordertoimplementitsobjectives. Andfinallythisyear,wearehostinganotherrecordof283filmsfrom45countries,includingthecontributionsfrom 6partnerfestivalsfromaroundtheworld.Theseare: 1. So,herecomes ourBook ofEntries2012 (part1) which contains only the films submitted in the International Nature FilmCompetition,whileanotheredition(part2)willincludethedataofthosefilmswhichparticipateinChildrenand Youth Film competition together with our festival contributions. Finally, we would like to express our gratitude and thank all participant film makers for their contributions, the cultural diversity and the high quality of their programs whichtheyvesubmittedthisyear.Suchparticipationmakesusalwaysfeelveryhappyandveryproudindeed! Fjord

Since 2005, the Nryfjord has been listed as a UNESCOWorld Heritage Site. The Nryfjord and Geirangerfjord areas are considered to be among the most scenically outstanding fjord areas on the planet. Their outstanding natural beauty is derived from their narrow and steep-sided crystalline rock walls that rise up to 1400 m direct from the Norwegian Sea and extend 500 m below sea level. Along the sheer walls of the fjords are numerous waterfalls while free-flowing rivers rise up through deciduous and coniferous forest to glacial lakes, glaciers and rugged mountains. There is a great range of supporting natural phenomena, both terrestrial and marine such as submarine moraines and marine mammals. The film FJORD is a personal interpretation of this unique landscape. The film has no dialogue. The Storyteller

7 year old Nirmala attempts to grapple with the demons of her grandfathers dementia when he forgets the details of her favorite story. Nirmala confidently takes up her grandfathers role of storyteller, by putting on his glasses, in the hope that by telling the story correctly, she can get rid of the demons that riddle her grandfathers version. Based on a myth about how the coconut got its face from Southern India, this film delves into different landscapes of their two unique imaginations, exploring how age and time can change human experience and morph familiar stories, lives and even relationships.

Chasing Pavements

Our cities are consumer lead and draining the worlds resources. Their communities increasingly controlled and isolated. But what if there were other pavements to tread and ways of living? Kerala, the southernmost state in India is unique in many ways. Kerala is noted for population growth rate that is less than the national average, low infant mortality, death rate matching any of the advanced nations, high literacy and gender ratio. Rising tourism also shows some promise for Kerala. Yet, Kerala remains a food-insecure state. There are more than 3.6 million families in Kerala below poverty line, earning less than equivalent to one US Dollar a day. Globalization, liberalization, urbanization, population growth, rising price of fuel, climate change all these contributed to upsetting world food security. In Kerala, too, the reasons are no other. The key message of the film is the food production is dwindling all over the world and so is the range of variety in food making it hard to get for the poor... From Pain to Paradise

Ref: 49

Country: Finland Language: English narration Length: 16 Completion date: 2011 Synopsis This short film deals with two stories about two bears with their fates in contrast...The film starts at Bifeng-xia Panda Base near the city of Yaan in South west China, the home of the Giant Pandas and one of Unescos world heritage sites. There, for a resident panda bear, life is one of comparative ease with about 40 different bamboo species available for them to eat and with their diet often supplemented with fruit and specially-prepared dietary supplements. It is a stress-free existence and a life of comparative luxury. But sadly, life for the black Asiatic bear, the so called Moon bear (Ursus thibetanus) is a completely different story. In countries across Asia including China, thousands of these bears live a life of torture on bear farms in order for their bile to be extracted. The bile is used in traditional medicine to cure various illnesses ranging from headaches to hemorrhoids. Lisa Yang, Animal Asia Foundations welfare officer at the Moon Bear rescue centre in Chengdu, tells us their story... Alpine Meltdown

Global warming of 5 degrees Celsius - for the Alps that will become reality within the 21st century. Entire regions that are covered by glaciers today will turn into grassland. The last comparable event occurred about 15.000 years ago, concluding the most recent Ice Age. That rise in temperature took place over a period of 5.000 years. This time, its going to happen within about 100 years instead! Biologists expect that in Central Europe, one out of every four bird species will die out. But Alpine Meltdown also shows how warmer temperatures will attract new species from the south.

The Inn River is Central Europes largest tributary to the Danube with many faces: gravel banks, sandy islets, wetlands and riparian forests. The source of the Inn lies in the Engadin valley where the camera follows the local populations. In Tyrol and Bavaria, where the river finally empties into the Danube, we watch the beavers and otters. The film also addresses the serious threats and concerns its faces today: signs of human intervention are clearly apparent and the consequences are suffered by animal and plant life alike. Still, this journey is a glorious expedition into natural history.

Country: France Language: English Length: 52 Completion date: 2010 Synopsis

Ref: 81
FINALIST

In these environments, micro-organisms rule. In order to thrive, certain animals have made strange adaptations. Scientists are studying how they manage to live in water as acid as vinegar or as alkaline as washing powder. Living in Lake Retba in Senegal are square extremophilic bacteria that produce a red pigment to withstand the high salt concentration. The concentration of bacteria is so high that the lake has become completely pink. Their recent discoveries has already enabled the formulation of new hypotheses about life on Earth and perhaps elsewhere.

Life in Hell - Survivors of Heat
Country: France Language: English Length: 52 Completion date: 2011 Synopsis

Ref: 82

At temperatures above 50 degrees Celsius, life is lived at the extreme. To survive, certain animals have undergone some strange adaptations. In the hottest zones on the planet, scientists are studying how life has managed to develop between 50 and 120 degrees. In the heart of the Sahara Desert, the silver ant patrols in the middle of the day when the ground temperature exceeds 50 degrees. This ant is the only animal on Earth whose body temperature can rise to 54 degrees. It is at the bottom of the ocean that the hottest places on Earth can be found. Hot springs emerge from mid-ocean ridges at more than 300 degrees. In this Hell, hyperthermophilic organisms survive at over 80 degrees! The study of thermophilic or hyperthermophilic organisms has made many biotechnological advances possible. In particular, it is thanks to them if we are now able to amplify DNA and synthesise new molecules for the pharmaceutical industry. Ref: 83

Country: France Language: English Length: 52 Completion date: 2011 Synopsis In cold environments, micro-organisms rule. They form the basis of a fragile ecosystem threatened by global warming. Scientists are studying how these species manage to survive in environments as unstable and ephemeral as snow and ice. We know today that an average temperature increase of one degree for the entire planet corresponds to an increase of two degrees at the poles. Organisms adapted to the cold will certainly be the first on the planet to suffer heavily from the effects of the current climate changes...

Scientists are studying how these species manage to survive with so little oxygen, food and light in the most inhospitable caves on the planet. The Movile Cave in Romania is without a doubt the most extreme subterranean environment on Earth. Its isolation for several millions of years has led to the creation of a special microcosm. In certain parts of the cave, the concentration of hydrogen sulphate is 100 times that of the air we breathe. Dolphins - Messengers from the Sea
Country: France Language: English Length: 52 Completion date: 2010 Synopsis

Ref: 87

Frdrique Pichard and Jan Ploeg have something in common. In France and Ireland, they maintain an intense and loving relationship with Dony and Dusty, two solitary ambassador dolphins. For Frdrique, the encounter took place in Brittany while Dony was being treated for an injured nose and she remained at his side for a week. Afterwards, they met regularly, sharing special moments together between land and sea. On the west coast of Ireland, Jan Ploeg experienced a similar adventure, the difference being that it was the dolphin who came to his rescue. Their relationships, though equally intense, are very different. Frdrique takes an intuitive approach and shares a kind of connection with his dolphin. Whereas Jan, with more of a behavioural approach, tries to understand his dolphin as a living being. Lab Animal Kingdom

Animals are among the everyday tools used by medical research institutes and pharmaceutical, virology and toxicology laboratories. This issue regularly incites heated debate between defenders of animal rights and those who hold the notion of a necessary sacrifice for scientific advancement. For centuries, animals have paid a heavy price to mans scientific conquests. As ideas about living organisms and in particular the status of animals evolved, people began to question animal experimentation in the mid-20th Century. At the same time, advances in knowledge and technology have little by little enabled the conception and development of alternative methods that avoid the recourse to animal experimentation... Synopsis The Namib Desert in South Africa. At first glance, the landscape looks barren and empty. However, upon closer inspection, it is clear that almost the entire surface of the ground is covered with deposits. The desert regions of Australia, Asia and America present a comparable picture. Even in the Antarctic and the Arctic. They comprise lichens and mosses, cyanobacteria and green algae. What role do these sensitive organisms play in these ecosystems? Scientists have succeeded in finding proof that these biological deposits are not only protecting the desert floors from erosion they are also performing photosynthesis on a huge scale and binding CO2! They therefore make a critical contribution to the ecological health of our planet, preventing the expansion of deserts and protecting our climate. Lakes of Finland. Part 3: Lake Pyhjrvi in Skyl

If Finnish people hold anything in nature holy, it is lakes. It is no wonder that out of the 188,000 lakes in Finland, 33 are named Pyhjrvi, or holy lake. Perhaps the best known is Lake Pyhjrvi in Skyl, a lake famous for its fish and birds. Lake Pyhjrvi is an encouraging example of the power of conservation work. The municipalities around the lake, as well as organisations, farmers, industries, summer residents and fishermen have worked together to improve the condition of the eutrophic Lake Pyhjrvi for over three decades.

Puma!

The puma is one of the most impressive but also one of the shyest animals of Patagonia. He is also an important component of an intact ecological system. This powerful wild cat not just only regulates the stocks of herbivores, they are also on the top of the food chain from wich other animals profit a lot. Even though the puma is a protected species, they are hunted mercilessly. The Torres del Paine National Park is one of the few areas where the puma can find an intact naturally environment. Here they are able to hunt undisturbed and raise their cubs. In the rythm of seasons the film documented the life of a young puma with her three cubs. In one of the most beautiful landscapes of the world the camera accompanies the puma family starting with the first meat meal of the two months old cubs to their way of growing up and pass their first successful hunt. The Movie also shows how successful a puma needs to be, to bring up three young pumas and a lot of other animals are able to profit too.
