Lincoln served as a legislator and gave his famed House
Divided speech on slavery. Visit the Lincoln Tomb in Oak
Ridge Cemetery, where the family was laid to rest.
Near Springfeld is Lincolns New Salem, a replica
of the frontier village where the young Lincoln settled
and served as the towns postmaster. The Lincoln Log
Cabin in Lerna is part of a living-history farm where
interpreters portray Lincolns father and stepmother,
Thomas and Sarah Bush Lincoln.
Back in Springfeld, spend time at the Illinois State
Museum, which tells the story of the state from pre-
historic times to the present, and includes the new Play
Museum for little ones. The recently reopened Dana-
Thomas House, built for a Springfeld socialite, is a
Frank Lloyd Wright masterpiece. Kids will get a kick out
of Knights Action Park & Caribbean Water Adven-
ture, which offers carnival rides, a water park and the
next-door Route 66 Twin Drive-In movie theater. A
new family attraction in Springfeld is Scheels, a sprawl-
ing sporting goods store that features a full-size indoor
Ferris wheel, a NASCAR simulator, an old-fashioned
shooting gallery and a combination deli/fudge shop.
In Decatur, families will
want to check out scenic Sco-
vill Park, home to the Scovill
Zoo and Childrens Museum
of Illinois. In Normal, the
three-story Childrens Dis-
covery Museum features the
splashy new Water Works!
play exhibit. Head for fun in
the sun at Lake Shelbyville,
one of Illinois largest lakes, which offers swimming, boat-
ing, fshing, hiking and horseback riding. Or opt for the
quiet elegance of Allerton Park & Retreat Center, which
features 1,500 acres of formal gardens and nature trails.
Learn about the Amish way of life at Rockome Gar-
dens in Arcola, where youll find the Illinois Amish
Museum. Visit with Santas furry helpers at Hardys
Reindeer Ranch in Rantoul from August through
December. The University of Illinois at Urbana-
Champaign offers the Krannert Art Museum and
