Almost every philosophy department requires its undergraduates
to spend a significant proportion of their time in discussion. You
may not have experienced much formal discussion at school, so it
is important that you understand why there is much more of it at
university, especially in a subject like philosophy. Discussing things
with fellow students may at first seem an odd way to learn. If you do
not know why you are involved in a discussion, you may not get
much out of it.
