One of the biggest problems that any business can have to deal with is bad employee relations. This is especially true for a small & medium business where most likely every employee knows each other. The bottom line is that a good employee relations in work place is essential to any business. Every individual at the workplace shares a certain relationship with his fellow workers. Human beings are not machines who can start working just at the push of a mere button. They need people to talk to, discuss ideas with each other and share their happiness and sorrows. An individual cannot work on his own, he needs people around. If the organization is all empty, you will not feel like sitting there and working. An isolated environment demotivates an individual and spreads negativity around. It is essential that people are comfortable with each other and work together as a single unit towards a common goal. Good employee relationship in a business organization is an attitude of emotional readiness, which enables an employee to improve his productivity. Employee Relations is necessary in an organisation as salt to food. As one can’t imagine eating food without salt, a company cannot run without maintaining Employee Relations.

The development of sophisticated HRM, and the use of high commitment management practices, portends a transformation in the management of employment relations. Whereas in the past the managerial agenda was dominated by the need to deal with accommodating the trade unions, the key emphasis now, it is claimed, is concerned with engaging employees, and building their organizational commitment as a key source of improved business performance. The nature of employment relations makes it difficult for managers to pursue effective long-term and strategic approaches. On the one hand, managers view their employees as valued assets whose cooperation and consent is deemed essential to achieving organizational objectives. On the other hand, managers also have to exercise control over the workforce, exploiting and discarding them as necessary.
