STAND UP FOR DEMOCRACY TO HOST ‘KEEP YOUR HANDS OFF OUR DEMOCRACY’ PRESS CONFERENCE TODAY
Organizers prepare to launch campaign to remind state leaders to respect the will of the voters. Voters in 77 of 83 Michigan counties rejected PA 4 during the last election. No means NO!

Who: Stand Up for Democracy organizers, volunteers and supporters What: Organizers, supporters and volunteers will announce an action in Lansing next week to protest the governor’s efforts to pass new emergency manager legislation before the end of the year without consideration of alternatives that help instead of hurt municipalities. Voters in 77 of 83 counties rejected the last beefed up emergency manager law in the general election. When: 3 p.m. TODAY Where: Central United Methodist Church, 23 East Adams (one block west of Comerica Park) in downtown Detroit. Why: In July 2011, citizens in 13 cities around the state launched the repeal petition of the PA 4, the emergency manager “dictator” law. After countless hours, thousands of volunteers, dozens of protests and court battles all the way to the state Supreme Court, voters in 77 counties voted to repeal the onerous law. Many of those counties are represented by republicans. Even so, rightwing elements in state government are drafting bills to replace almost word for word the same law that was rejected by voters. The Stand Up for Democracy coalition is taking action to insure state leaders respect the will of the voters. ###
