SYNOPSIS
This project deals with the promotional strategies for an online tutoring company, jupiter2xlearning.com and about the product mix for the same. Today’s era is an era of Computers and its technologies and internet world. Now a day we can not imagine our life without computer and its uses. Everyone is taking advantage of its applications in his/her day to day life e.g. for trade (selling/buying things), for matrimonial services, for documentation, for saving important and crucial data, in medical field, for research work, for primary data collection, for education purpose, for communication, for sharing personal details via communities/ blogging etc. This project talks about its one of internet based service that is ONLINE TUTORING. This concept of online tutoring is done with the leading edge technologies of VOIP and whiteboard and some other relevant software. This has finished the way back style of teaching in which students use to sit in front of teacher. Now there is a whiteboard and headphone for whole session, and this sessions are completely students driven so now they can decide what they want to learn from the tutors. My project was on “proposing a product mix and promotional strategies for Jupiter online services”, whose online project is jupiter2xlearning.com before going through the project it was very necessary for me to understand this business so went for hardcore searching for the industry and when understood completely I started working on my project. It does not include a perfect pattern of the project as I am not well known to project and all that, what I knew was to work for the company. Whenever I had something for the betterment for the organization I immediately shared with the director. This project includes the whole process through which I went while doing project.

For better understanding I went for the trip to New Delhi. It was not an easy decision to go there. At first I was avoiding this as I never been outside of home town but my boss insisted that learning would come only if I follow some hard steps in life. Inspiring from this I contacted many of the competitors for the information but all refuses to unveil their secrets to me. But constant pressure from my side made some of them little bit softer. Finally three of them were ready to talk to me and its my luck that all were from one place. ☺ I went there and saw their infrastructure and understood the processes of tutoring, what they offer to the tutors, how the acquire the students, how they train to the tutors for online tutoring, their future plans etc. it was really an amazing experience to go over there. I missed two three things when contacted them but after realizing those I immediately screw them up with efficiency. No special tool was used for this information getting only the questionnaire I prepared was mandatory. All I can say at last that it was extreme experience for me to explore my ideas in the benefits to the organization in which I was working..

“No child left behind Act”, the recent law passed by the American government in the year 2002, has been a propelling force towards the direction of boosting online tutoring. According to this law the schools (public as well as private), which “failed” to provide quality education to the teenagers, are required to hire private tutors to enhance the student’s performance. Since then the schools that were lagging behind have tightened their belts. Due to this many American families have started enrolling their kids to these online tutoring centers rather than sending them to private tutors. The private tutors or tutorial companies in US charged $ 50 to $ 100 per hour and that helped a lot in boosting the business for these online tutorials companies as they charge as low as $ 15 per hour! Many Indian based companies like TransWebTutors (transwebtutors.com), BrainFuse, TransTutors and Tutor vista have come up with some very exciting offers. They are providing preparation for standardized tests like TOEFL, SAT, GRE, GMAT etc. Apart from this TransWebTutors (transwebtutors.com), a New Delhi based company is offering an unlimited online tutoring for $ 99 per month. Isn’t that mind blowing? These online tutorial companies have got a pool of teachers specialized in subjects like Mathematics, Science, English etc. Online Tutoring industry has risen up very much and is growing day by day. Online tutoring is a key to success for American teenagers and serve as a tremendous weapon for their growth and success in the coming future. It's the outsourcing of education. Just like manufacturing or service jobs, borders no longer limit the task of teaching America’s youth!

Online tutoring is proving to be a boon for quality education starved students especially in developing countries where tutoring charges are very high. Online tutoring is the best way for such students to get extra help in perusing their study smoothly. Just with a click of mouse, you get access to professionals and tutorials of desired subjects. In US itself, online tutoring costs 30-40% less than traditional tutoring. Apart from monetary concerns, students save a lot of time and energy as in this case the scope of commuting is out of question. Students can avail online tutoring anywhere, be it public library, school, home, cyber café or a friend’s place. Online tutoring facilitates the students to chart out their program according to their own preferences. Flexibility of timings in online tutoring doesn’t force the students to cancel or postpone their other important engagements. Students can avail online tutoring anytime, be it early hours or late night without disturbing their regular study hours and tasks. No Child Left Behind (NCLB) act of America worked as a catalyst in the growth of online tutoring industry. Outsourced tutors are being used to fulfill the supplementary education requirements of knowledge starved American students. Indian companies like TransWebTutors, Tutorvista, and Transtutors are providing online tutoring services with utmost perfection. These companies work hard to train and to make their tutors familiar with American curriculums. Tutors of these companies easily assess the capability of students and match the pace of tutoring according to individual capability of students. The statistics of success in US, UK, Canada, Australia and other developed countries, confirm the quality entrepreneurship, perfection and excellence of management people and employed tutors of these companies in online tutoring.

*India is fast emerging as the global online tutoring hub by delivering top-notch teaching services at down-to-earth rates. With a large number of dedicated post-graduates well-versed in English language, India has the greatest potential to grow in the online tutoring industry, say industry insiders. Indian teachers provide tutoring services at a fraction of the amount charged by their counterparts in the United States, United Kingdom and other European countries. "When it costs $40-100 per hour in the US, Indian teachers charge three to four times less," says V Rameshwar, Chief Quality Officer of Chennai-based Tutors World Wide (I) Pvt Ltd. Going a step further, Bangalore-based Tutorvista provides unlimited tutoring for a month for USD 100, says its Chairman and Founder, K Ganesh. Within a short span of two years, ever since supplementary education through internet attained an industry status in India, the growth rate is 100-150 per cent, says Rameshwar. The company, which was started in 2004, now has 400 teachers in its pay-roll and around 5,000 students across the globe. According to Ganesh, 18 months back, Tutorvista started with one teacher and one student and now has 500 teachers and over 2,000 students. India now earns around 15 million USD per year from online tutoring --10 per cent of the total market share. "This is expected to swell to 2.4 billion USD within three years", says Ganesh. Tutorvista has students in 12 countries, including Australia, Turkey, Denmark, Singapore, the Middle East and Canada. But majority of the students are from the US and the UK.

Need for Study
Every business needs growth and for that it needs continuous efforts and new technologies. For that the researchers has always been trying hard to explore new ideas and ways to satisfy the customer’s need. Customers are also very intelligent now a day, they know the market very well and because of the highly competitive market they have more options to choose from. He always looks for his profit as well as the services associated with the relevant products. In our organization also there is an intellectual group of customer who know what they are getting and at what cost. They are not bothered by the price they paying with respect to the quality. We have the quality and the best price in the tutoring world but what we are lacking in is our promotion, as being at initial stage we are targeting students from US only. So our current task was to promote our business, it could be in any way either through website or surveys or campaign or road shows or presentations or some educational programs or through some email marketing concepts or by sending mailers etc. these are so many…. So to reach to the targeted customers we needed heavy promotions and different packages. Our main target were the students from K-1 to K-12 for academic subjects and for the languages we were targeting only those who wanted to learn new languages and children of NRIs who were willing to learn the Hindi language. These were the main criterion for the study this project.

When Biju Mathew moved to the United States in 2000 to work as a software engineer in a Silicon Valley start-up, he hit an unexpected roadblock in his personal life: finding tutors for his school-age children. His kids had been used to tutoring in India and wanted to continue with it in their new environment. Mathew, however, found tutoring in the United States , both traditional and online, very expensive. At anywhere between $40 and $100 per hour, the kind of daily tutoring that his children were used to was unaffordable. Mathew looked for some way to connect his children to their tutors back in India . He also realized that, like him, many other parents in the United States would want highquality tutoring for their children at affordable prices. Spotting a business opportunity, Mathew found a seed investor, Saji Philip. He then hired three software engineers in his hometown in Kochi in southern India to work on the software required for e-tutoring. In January 2004, with the technology in place and three tutors on board, he set up Growing Stars and offered math tutoring at $25 per hour. Over the last few years, online tutoring from India for students across the globe has taken on the contours of an industry. Along with other services in the burgeoning person-toperson offshoring (PPO) space, it has tremendous growth potential: In the U.S. market

alone, revenues for Indian tutoring companies are estimated by some to be at $20 million today, and industry players expect the total to reach $2 billion in three to five years. Demand for online tutoring from India is driven by its large talent pool of teachers and lower costs. This is similar to the demand for the well-established Indian software and services and business process outsourcing industries. Then there is the advantage of sheer convenience. In most of these companies, online tutors are available 24 hours a day for one-on-one help. Students can log in at their convenience and assignments can be discussed through online chat sessions and voice. A virtual whiteboard allows the use of charts, graphs and diagrams. While there are no firm numbers about the industry's size, estimates suggest that well over 100 players fill the space. They range in size from the venture-fund backed TutorVista.com, which has 600 tutors and 10,000 students, to Tutors Worldwide India, a fully-owned subsidiary of the U.S. company Socratic Learning, with 250 tutors. There are also mom-and-pop outfits with five tutors or fewer. Science, mathematics and English are usually taught. Offerings include homework help, regular grade tutoring, and preparation for the SAT, ACT and other exams. In many cases, tutors work from their homes. Though prices vary, they are much lower than those at U.S. tutoring firms, in some cases as low as $10 an hour. TutorVista.com, which charges $99.99 per month for unlimited tutoring, aims to make its service part of a family's monthly budget, like a health club membership. A Wealth of End Consumers A report by Alok Aggarwal of Evalueserve, a global research and analytics services firm, puts online tutoring from India as one of the PPO services to watch out for. Others with

strong growth potential are website development, graphic design, and editorial and writing services, according to the report. Aggarwal says that with technology advances and the growth of the Internet, small offices, home businesses and individuals can utilize PPO services. Individually taken, each contract is often of low value, usually between $100 and $5,000. "But since the number of end consumers and small businesses is enormous, the total addressable market in the United States alone easily exceeds $20 billion," the report says. Evalueserve's research shows that from April 2006 through March 2007, revenues from the PPO sector were more than $250 million. Aggarwal says that India 's share was $35 million to $40 million, and that online tutoring from India would have been around $12 million to $14 million. He expects the PPO market to grow to more than $2 billion by 2015. Indian players are far more bullish. They estimate revenues from tutoring from India to the United States at $20 million, and expect the total to reach $2 billion in three to five years. According to K. Ganesh, founder of TutorVista, "This is like the market for computers or the market for cell phones in India . It is completely dependent upon how disruptive the model is and the price point." Technology, both by way of advancement and penetration, will play a key role, Ganesh adds. For Aditya Singhal, founder of TransTutors.com, the figures are immaterial. "It really doesn't matter what the numbers are," he says. "We have not even touched the tip of the iceberg and the growth is going to be exponential. The market is simply too huge." Indian e-tutoring companies haven't forayed only into the United States . They are also reaching out to students in the United Kingdom , Canada , Australia , China and West

Asia . But it is the U.S. online tutoring market, currently estimated at $200 million and which some players say represents more than half the global market, that excites them most. TutorVista, for instance, has students in 13 countries, but more than 90% of its revenues come from the United States . Indian companies -- those already in the education business and start-ups -- have been quick to spot these opportunities and are trying out different business models. Some, like Educomp Solutions and TransTutors, have tied up with U.S. e-tutoring firms and get work subcontracted from them. As the back-end vendors for the U.S. firms, these Indian companies put up the infrastructure and hire and train tutors in India . In most cases, the course content is provided by the U.S. company, which also performs the marketing, brand building and student acquisition. For the U.S. firms, outsourcing some of their work to India for as little as $6 an hour -- compared with the $10 to $15 per hour that they pay to tutors in the United States -- is a steal. Their success in outsourcing IT services and business processes to India makes it an even more compelling proposition. When students in the United States log on to the U.S. service provider's website, more often than not they have no idea that their tutor may be in India . Another business model that companies, including TutorVista, have adopted is the direct-to-consumer route. Along with the back-end operations, these companies develop course content and reach out to students directly. Some companies, such as Career Launcher, started their e-tutoring operations as back-end providers, learned the ropes, then branched out to the retail segment. Others are keeping both options open, a strategy they obviously prefer to keep under wraps for fear of upsetting their U.S. partners.

Each of these business models has its own opportunities and challenges. While the subcontracting model has a low gestation period, it is also very competitive. With an eye toward getting the work, Indian companies tend to undercut each other. The result is low margins, around 10%. On the other hand, the direct-to-consumer model offers much higher margins, around 25% to 30%. But it requires large up-front investments for brand building and customer acquisition.

A Potential Game-Changer Meanwhile, one player that has introduced a potentially game-changing move is the Bangalore-based TutorVista. Started by Ganesh in November 2005, TutorVista has flat pricing of $99.99 per month for unlimited hours of tutoring. "At half the price of U.S. companies, one can create a certain demand, but the demand cannot explode," Ganesh says. "What we have done is to introduce disruptive pricing." TutorVista has also focused on developing proprietary software and building its brand. Over the last two years, it has invested 50 man-years and $2 million to develop its own ecommerce platform. "Our teachers and students have around 200,000 sessions per month. To manage this is a nightmare and can be done only by automation," Ganesh says. He sees brand building as TutorVista's biggest challenge for now. He points out that certain consumer businesses by nature are successful either as extremely small or very large set-ups. Online tutoring, he says, is one such business. "If you want to scale up, you have to be at a completely different level. There can be no in-betweens. The customer acquisition costs alone will kill you. It requires a huge amount of money, and this is what

most companies fail to realize," Ganesh says. "It was only when we raised $2 million from Sequoia Capital in June 2006 that our business really started." TutorVista, which turned profitable in January, has received $18 million in venture funding. A big chunk of the money is going toward building the brand. The mandate for TutorVista's marketing vice president, Anu Bhave, who is based in the United States, is to build partnerships with school districts, schools, libraries and education software companies. "The strategy is to get access to a large number of students at one go," Bhave says. Other companies, too, have been busy with their growth strategies. Educomp, for instance, has acquired a 76% stake in Three Brix e-services, the promoter of tutoring website Learninghour.com. It is now looking to address the U.S. market in a big way. Career Launcher has entered into a joint venture with POWERMath, which has both an online and offline presence in the United States . Stepsedu.com recently introduced a "zero investment" affiliate program to expand its reach with students in the Unites States and Canada . Says Stepsedu founder Kamal Wadhera: "Our affiliates don't have to deliver the service on our behalf. They only have to enroll the students for us." TransTutors is in talks with U.S. firms for both investment and possible partnerships. Another company, TransWebTutors, is preparing to launch is own technology platform in the next three to four months and is talking to investors for $5 million to $10 million in funding to take the company to the next level. "Until now we have been focused on getting our back-end operations in place and on customer retention," founder Nishant Sinha says. "We are now ready to grow exponentially. The funding will be for marketing and building our brand."

Fraught with Challenges For all the opportunity, however, the business is fraught with challenges, both external and internal. For one, while students and parents may relish access to affordable, high-quality tutoring, the noise is growing in the United States about outsourcing of services of any kind to India . When it comes to education of their young and impressionable, the noise is only expected to get louder. According to S. Sadagopan, director of the International Institute of Information Technology in Bangalore , it will be "imperative" that online tutoring companies from India "set standards in place and also build strong assurance mechanisms. Building credibility with quality is the key to the success of this industry." To be a player of any reckoning, scale is also a must. This means companies need to invest significantly in technology for a complex e-commerce platform and back-end infrastructure. Kiran Karnik, former president of the National Association of Software and Service Companies, cautions that companies will not succeed if they remain too focused on keeping costs down. "There is a huge potential waiting to be tapped. Indian companies should not short-change themselves by cutting corners." India is fast emerging as the global online tutoring hub by delivering top-notch teaching services at down-to-earth rates. Within a short span of two years, ever since supplementary education through internet attained an industry status in India, the growth rate is 100-150 per cent, says Rameshwar. Among the other developing countries which have ventured into the "eBay of education", such as Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Malaysia, India has an edge, says Ganesh. India has a large number of post-graduates with sufficient computer know-how compared to these countries, he says.
