Ta Ann demand

Dec. 4, 2012, 9:26 a.m.

TA ANN'S Evan Rolley has issued an ultimatum to the Legislative Council to support the forest peace deal or Ta Ann will close. Surely the best result for Tasmania is for the Legislative Council to throw out the bill and for Ta Ann to continue its operations with supply guaranteed by the government with bipartisan support from the opposition. There is no need for Ta Ann to suffer a 40 per cent reduction in its timber supply or for taxpayers to pay them millions of dollars in compensation just because the Greens have decreed it so. The government should immediately introduce legislation to impose severe penalties on those who disrupt the workplace or sabotage overseas markets. The Legislative Council must reject this so-called "peace deal" and let production and demand find its own level without control and manipulation by radical minorities. Forestry is not evil.
