DashinDungeonsisaRolePlayingGame(agameoffreeformstorytelling)fortwotofiveplayers. OneplayeractsastheDealer(StoryNarratororGamesMaster)fortheentiregame,whichusually lastsaboutanhourorso.Theotherplayerstaketherolesofateamoffictionalheroes(Characters) inafantasystorywhichisbroughttolifebytheimaginationofalltheplayersinvolved.Forthe Charactersinthestorythereisnosetscript.TheplayersdecidehowtheirCharactersactandreact inthevarioussituationsdescribedbytheDealer. ThegroupofCharactersworktogetherasateam(akaParty)toovercomeobstacles,suchas monstersandpuzzlesdescribedbytheDealerasthestory(Adventure)unfolds.TheDealerplaysthe roleofallincidental(NonPlayer)charactersinthestoryanddecidestheactionsofanyMonsters encounteredbythePartyduringtheAdventure.TheDealeralsoactsasanimpartialrulesarbiterin agame;determiningwhathappensinthestorybasedontheCharactersactions. TheDealershouldreadthisoverviewoftherulesallthewaythroughbeforeyouplay.Thereare severalplacesinherewhereQuickReferencecardsarementioned.Asetof8DEALERQUICK REFERENCEcards&2setsof3PLAYERQUICKREFERENCEcardsareprovidedwiththissettoallow allplayersaccesstothemaingamerulesduringplay.Onceyouarefamiliarwiththerulesyouwill findyouwillbeabletoplaythegameusingtheQuickReferencecardsalone. BeforeyoustartagameofDashinDungeonsyoushould: 1.Selectaflatplayingsurface(asmalltableisideal). 2.SelectoneplayertobetheDealer.Theotherplayers(upto4)willplaytheCharactersinthestory. Cutandfoldthestandupminiatures(SeetheFoldUpMiniaturescards),ifyouhaventalready. 3.Separatethevariouscardsintopiles.MostpileswillbeusedprimarilybytheDealer.TheDungeon Tiles,Adventure&Monstercardsshouldbekeptfacedown/hiddenfromthePlayerswhointendto betheCharactersinthestory. 4.TheDealerselectsanAdventurefromtheonesincludedinthisset*. 7.ShuffletheFatecardsandplacethemfacedownwithinreachofallplayers(ifnotpossible,they shouldatleastbewithinreachoftheDealer).PlacetheDealerQuickReferencecardsinfrontofthe DealerandthePlayerQuickReferencecardsnearthePlayers. 8.ShuffletheBattleSequencecards&placethemneartheDealer. 9.Makesurethereisaclearcentralspaceontheplayingsurface(themiddleofthetableisbest) wheretheDealercanlaydowntheDungeonTilecardsastheAdventureprogresses.EachDungeon TilerepresentsadifferentAreaoftheMap(SeePlayingagamebelow). 10.PlacetheEntryDungeonTilefaceupasthestartoftheMap.Facedownbesideitplacethenext DungeonTile(asdetailedontheAdventureMapcard). 11.PlayersplacetheirminiaturesontheEntrytile. 12.PlayersshouldtakeamomenttostudytheirCharacters,andiftheyhaveanyquestionsabout them,theyshoulddiscussthemwiththeDealerbeforeplaybegins.[Note:Ifyoucannotfindordo notknowtheanswertoaquestionabouttherules,feelfreetoinventyourownhouserulesforuse inyourgame]. CharacterAttributes: OneachCharactercard,therearenumericvalueslistedbesidethefollowingAttributesFighting, Health,Magic,Psyche,&Search.EachoftheseAttributesrepresentsaCharactersraw personalabilityinaphysicalormentaldiscipline.Eachdisciplinecanbedefinedasfollows: Fighting ACharactersskillincombatandabilitytoapplyphysicalstrength Health ACharactersstaminaandresistancetodamage Magic ACharactersmagicalaptitude,personalmagicalpower;skillinmagicandtheir inherentresistancetomagic Psyche ACharactersmentalcapacity,wisdom,problemsolvingpowerandstrengthof mentalfortitude ThenumberscorelistedbesideeachAttributerepresenthowexperiencedorpowerfulthecharacter isinthatparticularphysicalormentaldiscipline.Thehigherthescorethestrongerormoreskilled theCharacterisinthatdiscipline. ThesescorescanbeappliedtotheresolutionofvariousTasksinthegameandusuallydeterminethe maximumnumberofFatecardsdrawntoresolveaTask(SeeTaskResolutionbelow). TheHealthAttributealsoindicatesthenumberofInjurypointsaCharactercantakebeforebeing incapacitatedSeeCombat. Playingagame: TheDealerstartsbydescribingtheobjectiveorgoaloftheAdventure.(SeetheIntroductionor BackgroundinformationonthefirstoftheAdventurecards).FormostgamesofDashinDungeons, theCharactersareassumedtohavearrivedattheEntrytothedungeon,sotheDealershould

describetheEntryitselfbasedonwhattheCharacterscanseeofthefirstnumberedArea(as detailedontheAdventureKeycards)before,orastheyenterthedungeon. PlayproceedswiththePlayersreactingtowhattheDealertellsthembydeclaringtheirCharacters Actions.ActionscanincludemovingfromoneAreatoanotheradjacentone,searchingorexploring theircurrentArea,ordealingwithMonstersortrapsthatguardanArea. BasedontheActionsstated,theDealerdecideswhetheranyTaskResolutionisneeded(see ActionsandTaskResolutionbelow)andthendescribestheresultsoutloudtothePlayers. WhentheCharactersmoveintoanewArea(bymovingtheirminiaturesfromonedungeontiletoan adjacentdungeontile),theDealernotonlyturnsoverthenewAreasDungeonTilecard(whichwas originallyplacedfacedown),buttheyshouldalsolayotherfacedownDungeonTilesbesidethe newlyrevealedArearepresentingfurtheradjacentAreas(thisshowsthepartyanyvisibleexitsfrom theAreatheyhavejustentered).[Notethatsecretorhiddenexistsdonothavetoberevealeduntil orunlesstheyarediscoveredthroughasearch]. WhenplacingnewfacedownDungeonTiles,theDealerreferstotheAdventureMapcardforthe layoutofthedungeonandselectsDungeonTilesaredetailed(SeeDealerQuickReferencecards7& 8foradescriptionofwhatthedifferentmapiconsmean). AstheCharactersexploretheAdventureMap,theDealerturnsovereachfacedowndungeontile anddescribeswhattheCharacterssee,hearorsmellinthatArea.Briefdescriptionsofeach numberedAreaontheAdventureMapareprovidedontheAdventureKeycards,buttheDealer shouldfeelfreetoaddextradetailstoenhancetheatmosphereofthegame. ThecombinationoftheDealersAreadescriptions,PlayerreactionsandActions;alongwiththe resultsofthoseactionsdescribedbytheDealer;providesthestorythatallPlayersofaDashin Dungeonsgameexperience.ThePlayersactofplayingtheroleofeachoftheCharactersisthe roleplayingpartofthegame,although,theDealeralsoroleplaysthepartofthemonstersinthe dungeon,andprovidesthestorynarrationbydescribingtheactionoftheAdventure. ThestorytellingbetweenDealerandPlayersgoesbackandforthaseachnewsituation(andArea) presentsitself.AlthoughtheDealerandthePlayersusuallytaketurnsdescribingtheactioninthe story,thereisnostrictsequenceofturnsforeachplayerinthegameexceptwhencombathappens betweentheCharactersandMonstersseeCombatbelow. OncetheobjectiveorgoaloftheAdventureismet;allAreasoftheMapareexplored,orallthe Charactersareincapacitated,thegameends.TheDealershouldconcludeeachAdventurewitha summaryofoutcomesprovidingadescriptionoftherewardsfortheCharacters;assumingthatthey survived.CharacterswhosurviveanAdventuremaywishtospendgoldorsellitemsattheMarket seePlayerQuickReferencecard3beforetheirnextAdventurebegins. Actions: ActionsmadebyCharactersarelimitedonlybyaPlayersingenuity;however,youmayreferto MovementandActionOptionsonPlayerQuickReferencecard2forsomeofthemoretypicalnon combatactions,andCombatActionOptionsonPlayerQuickReferencecard1forsomeofthe moretypicalcombatactions.

DuringanAdventure,theCharactersmustovercomeobstacles,suchasdeadlyTrapsandmenacing Monsters(asdetailedbytheAdventureKeycardsanddescribedbytheDealer).Whenevera Characterattemptsanactionthat,intheDealersopinion,ismorethanjustroutine(e.g.sneaking alongveryquietly),orwheretheremightbeoppositiontotheaction(e.g.attemptingtounlocka lockedtreasurechest),theDealerwillcallforTaskResolution. TaskResolution: Actions(includingAttackActions)areresolvedin3steps: 1.DealerdeterminestheTaskDifficultyvalue. EachActionlistedintheMovementandActionOptionsonPlayerQuickReferencecard2 orDealerQuickReferencecard3listsaDifficulty. Thedifficultytypesare:Easy(1),Normal(2),Difficult(3),VeryDifficult(4),Extreme(5)or Crazy(6). SpecialSkillsandsomeMagicalDevicesalsolisttheDifficultyfortheiruseonthecardfor thatSkillorDevice. TheDifficultyvaluemaybemodified(+/)byEquipmentusedorbyMagicalDevicesorSpells whichenhanceaCharactersabilitiesorbytheDealerifcertaintheyfeelthatthecurrent environmentorsituationaffectsthedifficultyofthetask. NOTE:AttackActionDifficultiesaredetermineddifferentlytootheractionsseeCombat below. 2.TodeterminethesuccessorfailureoftheattemptattheTask,drawcardsfromtheFatedeck& selectsthehighestvaluecardfromthosedrawn. NOTE:aplayermaystopdrawingatanytimeuptothemaximumnumberofcardsallowed,but muststopimmediatelyiftheydrawaSuccessorFailurecardseetheSpecialnoteinStep3 below. ThemaximumnumberofcardswhichcanbedrawnequalsthelistedAttribute.TheAttributefora TaskcanbedeterminedfromthelistofMovementandActionOptionsonPlayerQuickReference card2orDealerQuickReferencecard3,bytheSpecialSkillcardor(ifnootherguidelinesare otherwiseavailable)bytheDealer. 3.IfthehighestvaluecardequalsorexceedstheDifficulty,theattemptissuccessful;elseitisa failure.Basedonthesituation,theDealershoulddescribetheresultsoftheActiontothegroup. Specialnote:IfaSuccessorFailurecardisdrawnatanytime,theTaskdrawstopsimmediately andtheactioniseitherautomaticallysuccessfulorautomaticallyafailurebasedonthecard. Combat: Combatbetweencreatures(charactersormonsters)happensinorderlysegmentsoftimecalled combatrounds.EachcreaturegetsoneActionpercombatroundseeCombatActionOptions DealerQuickReferencecard2andPlayerQuickReferencecard1.[Note:OnbothReferencecards anotebesidetheactionAttackanothercreaturesaystoseeAttackactionCombat2.Thisisa referencetoRulescard27fromtheDashinDungeonsRulesDeckwhichgoesintodetailabout AttackActions]. ACombatRound: 1.EachcreatureinvolvedinacombatisdealtaBattleSequencecardfromthe9cardBattle Sequencedeck. 2.InascendingBattleSequencenumberorder,eachcreaturemakestheirAction.Mostcreaturesin combatwillchoosetoAttack,however,otherActionscanbeperformedinsteadseeCombat ActionOptionsonPlayerQuickReferencecard1forsomeofthetypicalcombatactions. Note:IfacreatureisunawareofaAttackorotherCombatActionmadeagainstthem,theDealer shouldnotetherulesunderSurpriseAttacksonDealerQuickReferencecard3,fortheeffects surprisemayhaveonTaskResolutionincombat. 3.TheDealerresolvesanyCombatActionsorAttackTasksasrequiredduringeachphaseinthe BattleSequence. ACharacterwhobecomesincapacitatedcannotmakeanyActionduringtheirturnintheBattle Sequence. AttackTasks: AttackinganothercreaturerequiresanAttackTaskresolution,exceptthattheDifficultyofanAttack Task=(highestcardofDefendersFatedraw+thevalueoftheDefendersArmour+anyMagical Devicesthataffecttheirdefence). ToresolvetheTask,theDefenderdrawsfirstfromFatedeckusingtheirFightingAttributeto determinethemaximumnumberofcardsdrawn.AswithnormalTasks,theDefendermaystop drawingatanytime,howeverifaSuccessorFailurecardisdrawn,thedrawstopsimmediately. Next,theAttackerdrawsfromtheFatedeckusingtheirFightingAttributetodeterminethe maximumnumberofcardsdrawn.AswithnormalTasks,theAttackermaystopdrawingatanytime, howeverifaSuccessorFailurecardisdrawn,thedrawstopsimmediately. TheAttackeraddsthevalueoftheirWeapon+thevaluefromanyMagicalDevicesthataffecttheir attack;tothehighestcardvaluedrawn. IftheAttackersresultequalsorexceedstheDifficulty,theyaresuccessfulintheirattack.Successin anAttackTaskmeanstheDefenderisdealtoneInjurycard,unlessotherwisespecified. IfanySuccessorFailurecardsaredrawnbyeitherAttackerorDefender,theDealershouldreferto SuccessorFailureresultsincombatonDealerQuickReferencecard4.
