Dear fellow jazz guitarists

,

A reminder that the Jazz Guitar Club gathering is this Thursday (13th) at 8pm, when, as always, a very exciting evening is in store for you. It will be our usual club night with the help of Dave Turner on double bass and I'm very pleased to announce that jazz guitarist Paul Hartley will be making a guest appearance! See below. ITEMS FOR SALE! SEE BELOW.

THE AUGUST GATHERING The Olympics were in full swing and the Usain Bolt was running the two hundred metres that evening, also it's holiday time, but we still managed to have a great evening with some new faces! There was some great playing all round!

PAUL HARTLEY
Paul Hartley is a jazz guitarist based in Stockport in fact he holds the distinction of keeping jazz live in and around Stockport Market Place for well over 20 years and is currently resident at the legendary Bakers Vaults on most Tuesdays nights. The Paul Hartley Quartet has featured many of the top jazz musicians in the North West and, in addition to fronting his own band, he formerly co-led a popular twoheaded jazz guitar quartet with Vernon Hyde. Aside from small group playing, he often gets called to play in big bands, as an accompanist to vocalists, theatre work and world music projects. Instrument-wise, Paul currently switches between a vintage 1950 Gibson ES175 archtop and a 1960s Gibson ES345 semi-acoustic.
<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<0>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> The next North Wales International Jazz Guitar Weekend will be held on October 19 - 21. See www.northwalesjazz.org.uk for details and enrolment form. A FEW PLACES LEFT <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<0>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> The Congleton Jazz & Blues Festival was a huge success and there was more jazz than ever before. Andy and I played at a excellent venue, The Young Pretender, where we had a packed house. A letter from organiser Vince Cuttliffe below.
Trefor, just wanted to say a big thankyou for coming along to Congleton with Andy. I got great feedback about you guys, you made a great impression on the audience in the Young Pretender, something cool about what you played.......so you are cool! I hope we can do something again, Many thanks..... Best regards Vince
Paul Hartley

I have now used my new MAMBO amp at many different venues and for the first time ever for me I don't have to fiddle with the tone controls to find a sound that suits the acoustics of the room. I have the tone controls set on flat response and that's it, I get the sound I want at every venue! I feel it is the right kind of amp for archtop guitar. Hear it at the next JGC gathering. Trefor Owen. www.mambo-amp.co.uk/
<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<0>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> THE GUZZ PICK. Even when you think you have the perfect plectrum, as I did when I discovered the V pick, there’s always something new round the corner! I was introduced to the Guzz pick by Howard Alden and Peter Button. I now use it all the time! The S3 Guzz Pick can be played with three sides - Side 1 For playing solo - Side two and three for playing rhythm. It is 3.5 mm thick, (they are working on a thin version), and produces great tone and I find that the pointed edge is great for single string and rhythm work. Unlike the V pick the Guzz pick has a wonderful grip and will not slip out of your hand. The grip is different on both sides and it has a black rubber spot for added grip. I also find that you can get slightly different tone from the pointed edge dependent on whether the black spot is facing up or down. Here is the website http://www.guzzguitar.com/ If you are ordering the picks online you'll need to know the Spanish for United Kingdom which is Reino Unido. USEFUL LINKS: B M G (Banjo Mandolin & Guitar) Magazine has been revived! Click on the link.
http://www.banjomandolinguitar.org/news.htm This was the only guitar magazine around when I started playing in the 60's. Unfortunately it folded with the death of the editor and has now been revived. It was followed by "Guitar Player" which was great for jazz in its early years. Then there was a British magazine "Guitar" which was dedicated to jazz guitar. Didn't last long! This was followed by "Archtop" which was the forerunner of "Just Jazz Guitar Magazine".

SETTING GOALS
The importance of the guitar club is to have something to aim for. Less experienced players can get together and form a duo or trio, learn two or three tunes and perform them, then learn another two or three tunes, and before you know it, you have a lengthy repertoire. Here are a few tips: Jazz has to be prepared for! Learn tunes that have an interesting harmonic sequence. Learn the melody and the chords well - It's ok to have the music in front of you as a reminder. If you are an inexperienced player - do not

dive into the fake book and pick a tune you are not familiar with - I've seen it happen so many times in jam sessions and it always ends in disaster. Remember: The improviser is only as good as his accompanist. Work on your accompaniment skills. Be well prepared. Improvisation wise you should have a base to build from which also acts as your safety net.

COST
For CLUB NIGHTS (second Thursday of the month) admission is £4. For SPECIAL GUEST nights the cost is £5.

A REMINDER OF THE FORMAT: WORKSHOP SESSIONS
Occasional workshop session will be introduced at some point during the evening where the less experienced players, who are not used to performing in public, play within a workshop situation in front of a friendly audience.

EXPERIENCED PLAYERS.
The club welcomes more experienced players performing in a mixture of styles. So come along and perform, play solo, duo or bring your guitar band.

PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS
As it is a jazz guitar club, to perform you must be able to play a jazz standard, e.g. Autumn Leaves, Satin Doll, Minor Swing, Nuages, I'll Remember April, Girl From Ipanema, etc.
