What are the main food groups? Give at least 3 examples of wise choice foods from each of the main food groups o Vegetables – broccoli, romaine lettuce, spinach, carrots, sweet potatoes o Grain products – whole grains; barley, rice, oats, quinoa, wild rice, oatmeal o Milk and alternatives – soy beverages, skim milk, 1% milk, 2% milk o Meat and alternatives – fish, lean meat, tofu alternatives How much food is recommended each day (food guide servings) from each of the food groups (age appropriate)? o For a typical 14-18 year old female  7 vegetables and fruit  6 grain products  3-4 milk and alternatives  2 meat and alternatives Give ONE food guide serving example from each food group o Vegetables and fruit – 250 ml (1 cup) of leafy raw vegetables or salad o Grain Products – 30g cold cereal o Milk and Alternatives – 175g of yogurt o Meat and Alternatives – 75g of cooked fish What other “food group” is recommended to include and what drink is recommended o Oils and fats – things like unsaturated vegetable oil – oil to make eggs, salad dressing, margarine, mayonnaise o Beverages – water, juice, milk, soy beverages Often called “ Junk Food” – list TEN food items that could be classified as “junk” food? How could you define a Junk food? Can junk food be included in your diet and if so, how often? o Cakes, cookies, ice cream, chocolate, French fries, nachos, chip, fruit flavored drink, doughnuts, soft drinks o Junk foods could be classified as foods and beverages that contain a lot of sugar, salt, or fat and very little fibre, vitamins, or minerals o It’s difficult to not have junk food within the diet, but 2 times or less would be the best, junk foods can also be replaced with healthier alternatives
