Croix Courier 25 years ago tell us how far we have advanced. This is cartoon 1 in the series. by Art MacKay DATELINE ST. STEPHEN, NB: Well, it seems that about 25 years ago, one of the big topics of conversation was the “new” arena that was being built on King Street across from Carmen’s Diner. As is the case today, money was a major concern and folks were noticing some lack of care for the streets of the town. I remember that they felt the cost of the arena was sucking up money to the detriment of the normal servicing of the streets. This cartoon reflected those concerns ... and the attitude of the arena boosters as well! Does this all sound familiar? Driving through the streets of St. Stephen over these past weeks, it seems to me that they are in need of considerable work and under the circumstances the cartoon from 25 years ago reflects today’s issue relative to street maintenance and the new civic centre. As the French proverb says, “Plus ça change, plus c’est la même chose.” “The more things change, the more they stay the same.”
