DEMAND JUSTICE FOR GANG RAPE VICTIM AND SAFER CITY FOR WOMEN ASSEMBLE AT INDIA GATE AT 5 PM ON 19.12.

2012

18.12.2012 The JNUSU had organised a flash demonstration in front of the Vasant Vihar Police Station yesterday to demand immediate arrest of the culprits of the gang rape in Delhi on Sunday night. Today, responding to the CHAKKA JAM call of the JNUSU hundreds of students and concerned citizens from the neighbourhood blockaded the Munirka junction of the outer Ring Road for 3 hours from 11.00 am to 2.00 pm. The blockade was lifted after the protestors were informed that 4 of the culprits have been arrested and the 2 absconders are also being pursued. The JNUSU, in co-ordination with women’s organizations and concerned citizens of Delhi, has decided to continue the struggle for a safe Delhi for women. Despite massive uproar both outside and inside Parliament, the response of the Home Minister and the Delhi Police Commissioner to the brutal gang-rape incident is disappointing and routine. Two of the culprits are yet to be apprehended while the 23 year old victim is fighting for her life. The lack of safety for women in Delhi is based in systemic apathy of the Delhi Police, Home Ministry and Delhi CM towards crimes against women. We want the criminal justice system to provide immediate justice in this case, but we also demand general policy level steps to improve the safety situation in Delhi. On behalf of JNUSU, we appeal to all students and concerned citizens of Delhi to assemble at India Gate on 19th December, Wednesday, 5.00 pm to demand justice for the rape victim and to raise demands for safer city for women. Sd/V Lenin Kumar President, Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union
