Arrival Day
written by Keitha Grainger

Finally the long awaited day has come, our first litter in almost two years.  Cruiser and Addy puppies are due.  I had just crawled into a hot bath tub and was doing the wow this feels great, when Rob comes in with the phone.  It is my friend Liane telling me that Addy is in labour and would I please come over, trying to hide the groan in my voice I respond with a sure I’m on my way.  With lightning speed I head over to Liane’s.   Addy had a litter almost two years ago and it was a c-section (Addy forgets that she is a mini and has standard size puppies) knowing there were only two babies we knew another c-section was a very real possibility.  Sure enough after watching her for an hour we made the dreaded phone call to our wonderful vet to give them the heads up and started packing up, extra blankets for Addy to be wrapped in after, box well padded with blankets and beanie bags, whelping pad for my lap with clamps and cloths just in case she managed to push one out on the way.  The car is warm and ready, and we are off, with poor Addy groaning with each contraction.  Fortunately I didn’t have to tell Liane to step on it, we are making the trip to Fort MacLeod in record breaking time when it happens..COPS we are minutes from the vets office.  The young officer finally approaches the drivers window and states, I pulled you over you were doing twenty-seven kms. over the speed limit I need your drivers license, etc. I very politely interrupt his speech and ask if  we can continue this conversation at the vets office they are awaiting our arrival and with that Addy lets out the most mournful cry, the officer looks at her and says I understand now why you were speeding I will let you go this time drive safely.   Addy again forgot she was a mini and had standard size puppies again two beautiful boys, she had to be spayed on the table.  If by chance the officer who pulled us over should read this Liane and both would like to say THANK-YOU.   The pictures are the boys at birth and at four weeks of age.

Julia reports that her big boy True is more than just a super model. ;) True earned a High in Class with a 99 at the LDKC Show!) At the CKOC True went back to being handsome and got a group 1, 4 and 3...A Pretty Nice way to end the Show Year!

Vicky’s brags are all about Claire this month. Claire achieved her RAE2 at the LDKC rally trials. She is the first American Cocker Spaniel to achieve this title. Claire has retired from rally as her focus is now on obedience. Claire's first qualifying score from the obedience Novice A class was at the LDKC show. She also got a second Q at the Cal K9 trials the following weekend in Calgary. We will be looking for that final Q in early 2013 :)

Brags for Malachi! At the Red Deer & District Kennel Club Malachi was awarded BB Fri/Sat/Sun. And at the LDKC show Fri/Sat BB, Sun BOS. Thank you so much to my good friend Tammy Sawatzky for her excellent presentation of Malachi. Kudos to Malachi on his Cdn. Ch & Group placements. Gord & I are very proud of our boy & his accomplishment.

Shelley reports that Shecara’s Mobydick “Moby” placed 3rd in Group under Fred Gordon!

We’ve been so busy we need even more pages....
Amanda’s Border Collie Brit has a few brags of her own. At the LDKC show Brit finished her Rally Novice title with a 92, and 94. Earning High Score in Class on Sunday. Brit had her debut in Scenthurdle and was perfect each time- she is on her way to her first Scenthurdle title! She also was entered in her very first ASDA Stockdog trial and came home with a 4th and 1st Place finish! Earning her Third Place overall for the day! A Pretty great debut!

Amanda’s Cardigan Wicca came out of retirement for one last time in the Rally ring. Wicca was retired more than a year ago due to chronic injuries. Even without practice Wicca had no trouble and qualified in Advanced and Excellent Rally for that one last combined score for her RAE. Throughout her career she was always a High Scoring dog and this was no exception. She finished off with a High In Class in a very large Excellent B Class. Wicca ends her Performance career as ATCHC, BRONZE Bluetrix A Little
Wicca Majic MSDC, MJDC, MTRDC, MGDC, ExG Bronze, ExS Bronze, STCDC, CD, RAE, AgNJS, AgNs, SHDCH

Our deepest condolences to Kim Tollefson and her family on the recent passing of Maggie. She had a heart and personality larger than her size. She will be greatly missed. We never have them long enough.

Holiday Treats
Banana Bites When you think of foods that make your furry friend flip, bananas probably don't immediately come to mind. While it's true that fruit isn't usually at the top of any dogs list of favorite fare, using bananas in baking is a great way to create delicious and healthy treats. The best part about banana bites is that you (or your husband) can eat them too! Start by gathering all the necessary ingredients: 3 cups oatmeal 1-1/4 cup of flour 2 eggs 1/4 cup oil 1/2 cup honey 1/2 cup milk 2 mashed bananas Mix all the wet ingredients together first (oil, honey, milk, and bananas), and then add the flour and oatmeal until you have a smooth batter. Pour the batter onto a lightly greased cookie sheet, and then bake at 325 degrees (160 degrees Celsius) for 25 minutes. Once your banana bites are cool to the touch, use a knife or pizza cutter to slice them into small, bite-sized squares.

The Tail End
A few thoughts from the editor
Somehow Christmas is just a few days away. I am still not done my shopping. And as you can see the newsletter is horribly late. Such is life I suppose! In any case I’d like to wish all of you a Merry Christmas- enjoy this time of year as we celebrate with friends, family, and of course our four legged companions. It is important during the holidays to stop and be thankful for what we have, for letting the joy of the season into our hearts. So may your holidays be filled with love, laughter and family. The end of the year is also a time for reflection- a look back at the year gone by. What did we do well, what could we have done better? What would you do different? What will you do next year? Ask yourself these questions, and then send me the answers. ;) The next newsletter will be focusing on just that- your stories, photos and successes from 2012, and a peek into the future for 2013! I also have some changes in mind for the newsletter next year. I’d love some more input from members and am trying to figure out a way to get that! Stay tuned for news on that! photo by Wendy Devent
Jolene’s handsome senior collie- Tate. Never too old to get into the Christmas Spirit!
