You will understand the "internal f o r c e " if you understand this concept. it is like finely refined steel—able to defeat all hardness. alert and still. bending or stretching.3 TAICHITHEORY -erning The following is derived f r o m a translation of the classical writings conTai Chi which are said to date back to the Ming Dynasty (approx. When y o u use this energy. The mind directs the breath. when moving. as a cat catching a mouse. The body is not inclined. y o u will never have good results. Through the process of long and diligent practice. respond slowly. Then. The breath sinks to the "dan t i e n " . respond q u i c k l y . Storing up breath is like drawing a b o w . When you want to use the " c h i " . When you are standing. like water running in a great river. But you will not understand this w i t h o u t much time and effort. It is the origin of movement and quietude. and orders it to sink so that it may be gathered into the bones. The body becomes so sensitive that the weight of a f l y landing on you sets you in m o t i o n . Find the straight. no insufficiency. In appearance be like an eagle swooping down upon a rabbit. move like a wheel. Stand as a balanced scale. To avoid this you must know Y i n and Yang. relaxed and balanced so that you may protect yourself f r o m all directions. releasing it is like shooting an arrow. Tai Chi {the Supreme Ultimate) arises from Wu Chi (the formless). and y o u become " s o l i d " and follow him when he retreats. Y i n does not leave Yang and Yang does not leave Y i n . Keep one leg heavy. the body must be straight. and the mother of Y i n and Yang. f r o m the curved. When y o u advance and retreat. leaning. When the other's movement comes quickly. comes a "spiritual illumination". If you can regulate the inhalation and exhalation. The mind gives the command. A l l parts of the body must be thought of as connected. If the opponent does not move. it passes through the legs. then y o u do not move. then you move faster than him. the breath goes f o r t h as the banner. . then the body can be light and lively. The Five Internal positions are: (1) Sticking.b I M P O R T A N T P O I N T S O F T A I C H I PRACTICE If you practice Tai-Chi diligently. At dawn. Tai Chi will strenghten the body and prolong youthfullness. as soft as c o t t o n . In every movement the entire b o d y must be light and comfortable. you will find that your body w i l l be better able to resist the heat of summer and the cold of winter. The Eight Powers are: (1) Ward-Off. Practicing Tai Chi everyday moderates the temperment and reduces both mental and physical fatigue. The blood will circulate through the body freely. (6) Split. and it is especially important that all parts of the body function together. Y o u w i l l have more resistance to illness. (3) Press.

Take three slow deep breaths.T o u c h to upper palate.S t r a i g h t . Remember to follow the movement as shown in the photographs. With more practice. the form will become veiy smooth. relaxed.
