The problem: An earth fill has a compacted area of 784,970 compacted cubic yards. The borrow material which will be used is earth and gravel (table 4.4) and has an average moisture content of 16.8% moisture content in its natural state. The fill will be constructed in lifts of 6 inches in depth, loose measure and compacted to a dry weight of 121.52 lb./cf.. The truck or trucks which you will be using to construct this dam is the Cat 769D Dual Slope. The specification states that the moisture content of the compacted cubic yards is 19.10%. How many gallons of water will be needed or removed to construct the dam and how many full truck loads of material will be needed. In addition, your boss wants to know how many gallons of water will be needed per cubic yard of loose material or, how many gallons of water per loose cubic yards that will need to be removed.
