You talk to your hair dresser about your love life, your job woes, even your dysfunctional family.
Now there's a deeply intimate problem a growing number of South Florida salons can help you address: your hair loss.
More than your average hair stylists, these Broward and Palm Beach County cosmetologists are becoming certified "hair coaches," with extra education in how to spot, prevent and recommend ways to mitigate hair loss and the damage that leads to it.
It's all part of Boca Raton hair restoration surgeon Dr. Alan Bauman's Certified Hair Coach™ Program, launched last month as a way to arm area salons in the fight against the dreaded retreat of the human hairline.
"They're the first line of action when it comes to people with hair loss concerns," Bauman said. "People with hair loss or breakage, they're not going to their doctor, they're going to the people they trust — their hair stylist."

The program initially developed for cosmetologists is catching on in South Florida as more and more effective non-invasive treatments become available. Couple that with the scientific HairCheck measurement tool and Dr. Bauman's proprietary protocols, you have a win-win situation for salon owners and hair loss sufferers alike. Worried about hair loss?
Consult your ‘hair coach’ to deal with the issue

"People with hair loss or breakage, they're not going to their doctor, they're going to the people they trust — their hair stylist." The program offers a $149 one-day course designed and taught by Bauman. Certified salon owners then can offer their clients threeand six-month packages — ranging from $139 to $449 — complete with nutritional supplements and measurements from a HairCheck diagnostic tool that analyzes and tracks damaged hair.

Rhonda Green-Wallach, getting her first measurement from the HairCheck™ on a recent visit to S'Criage Spa & Salon in Parkland, was intrigued. "I like the idea that there's some data to support whether there actually is any improvement or not," said the 64-year-old Tamarac resident. "And when you're using a product, it's hit or miss."

Also available: shampoos, conditioners, styling products, even a "camouflage" spray and a $299 cheek-swab DNA test to gauge genetic disposition to certain treatment regimens. Any products sold — under the Biotin, Viviscal Pro and Bauman's own brands — earn the salons a 25 to 50 percent commission. "He's trying to arm them with the tools to refer to him. That's brilliant," West Palm Beach dermatologist Ken Beer said of Bauman's initiative. "Why didn't I think of that?" Beer agreed that hairdressers can be key in helping clients spot the signs of hair loss, but he cautions that, more than using supplements or shampoos, clients consult with a doctor to determine whether health issues are at the root of the problem. "Hairdressers are surprisingly good at certain things, including recognizing hair loss, so hairdressers as triage, I find that reasonable," Beer said, adding that he gets many referrals from salons about hair loss concerns. "But they need to make sure the client is seeing a doctor, instead of just offering a supplement or shampoo, which isn't going to help if they have thyroid disease or an iron deficiency or skin disease." Bauman said his course includes education on the root causes of hair loss and breakage, including possible underlying medical issues. certified "hair loss specialist" like him for a comprehensive medical evaluation. No referral fees are offered to anyone sending patients his way, he said. But outside the medical field, Bauman added, there is plenty hairdressers can help their clients do to recognize damaged hair and avoid over-stressing or mistreating it with harsh chemicals, treatments and heat-emitting devices, which account for much of the breakage that can lead to hair loss. The first, and often only, stop for that information, Bauman said, is the hair salon. "Ninety-nine percent of patients, if they're not getting answers from their stylist, will go to the drug store and pick up a bottle of Rogaine," he said. With the Hair Coach™ program, "we are helping more patients. That is a good thing. So many people with hair loss, they don't know where to turn. They're confused." The "keystone" of the program, Bauman said, is the HairCheck™ measuring device. Available as part of the three- or six-month packages or for $40 per measurement, it tracks the hairline and volume from one visit to the next, allowing clients to see whether the products or regimens they're using are working. So far, two hair salons — Bond Street Salon in Delray Beach and S'Criage in Parkland — have completed the certification, and seven more began the certification process last week. Bond Street Salon owner Lauren Donald said the program will enable her shop to do more to help clients with a pervasive problem that until recently had few solutions outside medicated shampoos or transplant procedures. "I think it gives clients more of a sense of security that their hair stylist can direct them to more solutions for all their hair care needs, beyond their color, cut and style, by having more education in the field," Donald said. "And it's a great opportunity to raise revenue." With salons competing mightily for customers willing to spend shrinking resources on their hair, having advanced certification in a critical area is an asset, said JoAnn Fass, owner of S'Criage Spa & Salon. "The economy has dropped drastically, so one way to step above

[the others] is to have more advanced education than the person next to you," said Fass, who also owns the Global Beauty Institute in Parkland, a post-secondary cosmetology school that advised Bauman on the hair coach curriculum and will help him train stylists in it. Hair loss education is not stressed in cosmetology school, and with so many products on the market touting themselves in billboards and magazine ads as hair-loss treatments, Fass said stylists "need to be educated on what their clients are reading." It also helps to draw in customers that may not otherwise try a salon's hair services. Green-Wallach, for example, is a frequent S'Criage customer, but until that recent visit had only used the salon's nail and facial services. By the end of her Hair Check Consultation, she was considering signing up for a threeor six-month package. "Hair is very important to your appearance in today's society," Green-Wallach said, "and I'm newly single, so it's even more important." nbrochu@tribune.com
