Area: ~ 49,000 square kilometers Habitants: ~ 5 400 000 Capital city: Bratislava Koice 2nd largest city Slovakia is a member state of the European Union, NATO, UN, OECD, WTO, UNESCO and other international organizations.

Brief history
The Slavs arrived in the territory of present Slovakia in the fifth and sixth centuries AD during the Migration Period. Various parts of today's Slovakia belonged to Samo's Empire (the first known political unit of Slavs), Great Moravia, Kingdom of Hungary, the Austro-Hungarian Empire or Habsburg Empire, and Czechoslovakia (1918). An independent Slovak state briefly existed during World War II, during which Slovakia was a dependency of the Nazi Germany 19391944. From 1945 Slovakia once again became a part of Czechoslovakia. Slovakia became an independent state on January 1, 1993 after the peaceful dissolution of its federation with the Czech Republic.

Industry
Slovakia was partly industrialized in the 19th century, but became an industrialized country in the second half of the 20th century. The Communist government emphasized heavy and arms industry. Today, main sectors are manufacturing, electro technical, chemical, petrol, steel, textile and food processing industries. Last years the car-making industry was on the rise, with car plants built in Bratislava (VW), Trnava (Pegueot&Citroen) and ilina (KIA).

HISTORY

In 1657, the Universitas Cassoviensis was established in Koice.

In 1762, the technical educa4on in Slovakia was moved to higher - educa4on level , when the Austro-Hungarian monarch Maria Theresa established the Mining Academy in Bansk ?avnica.

In 1937, the origins of higher technical educa?on in Koice, when the M.R.tefnik State Technical College was established in the city.

In the academic year 1938/39, teaching was supposed to start , but the pre-war events following the Vienna Arbitra4on caused the college to be moved rst to Preov, then to Mar4n and nally to Bra4slava, where it later formed the basis for the Slovak Technical University in Bra4slava.

The Technical University of Koice was founded in 1952.
