Introduction ____________________________________ This book is unique in that it will look at the Biblical Hebrew language of the Bible through the eyes of the Ancient Hebrews who wrote it. In a work such as this. By studying the culture and lifestyle of the Ancient Hebrews we can better understand their language. The study of the Ancient Hebrew language and alphabet begins with an understanding of the Ancient Hebrew culture as both are intimately related. or pictographs. Sometimes the gaps in the puzzle are small and easy to fill in based on the pieces around it. just like any other language. At other times . Each picture represented an object whose definition is closely related to the agricultural lifestyle of the Ancient Hebrews. change and evolve over time. It is the goal of this work to bring out the Ancient Hebrew meanings of words to the student of the Bible as never before done. Modern readers often ignore the fact that the Bible is an Ancient text and must be read as an Ancient text. but the pieces we do have. there will undoubtedly be some misinterpretation of the Ancient Hebrew culture and pictographs. we piece together and attempt to fill in the gaps as efficiently as possible. The original letters of the Hebrew alphabet was actually pictures. similar to Egyptian Hieroglyphs. The study of any Ancient culture is like putting together a puzzle. We will never have all the pieces to the puzzle. The definitions of Hebrew words.

will take on the challenge of continuing the research needed to piece together the puzzle. who have the same love for the Ancient Hebrew language and culture. There is much work to be done in this area of language and word study and I hope that others. 2 .Ancient Hebrew Language and Alphabet these gaps are large and difficult to fill in.

The letter b (beyt) is pronounced as a "b" when at the beginning of a word. "One who had escaped came and reported this to Abram the Hebrew". A Hebrew is "one who has crossed over". 3 Genesis 11. Known as Abram before God changed his name. and usually a "v" within a word. (Genesis 14.One .16 2 1 . "to cross over".The Hebrews ____________________________________ Who were the Hebrews? The first person mentioned in the Bible as a "Hebrew" is Abraham1.13) Is Abraham the first Hebrew? The Hebrew word for "Hebrew" is yrb[ / eevriy2 and comes from the root word rb[ / avar which means. One of Abraham's ancestors was Eber3 (rb[).

The Bible is the story of God and his covenant relationship (Hebraicly understood as "crossing over" from death to life) with an ancestral line beginning with Adam through his descendants Noah.28). making it possible that Eber was also a "Hebrew". is referring to the ancestral line from Adam to the Nation of Israel.3 where God says. which will be discussed later. meaning. Isaac." (Genesis 11. "And the whole earth was of one language. who became the "nation of Israel" also known as "the Hebrews".19 4 . The first use of the Hebrew language is recorded in Genesis 1. The Hebrew word for "mark" is twa / owt and is also the Hebrew word for a "letter" indicating that it may have been a "letter" that God placed on him.Jeff A. We know that these names are Hebrew rather than another language because all of the names have meaning only in Hebrew and are related to their character as described in the Biblical text. Around 500 BCE the Greeks finalized a left to right form of writing while the Shemites finalized a right to left form of writing. One example is the letter "lamed" that can be seen in several of the inscriptions above. Arabic.

To my grandparents and their generation. A word such as "rain" has the meaning. This is true even in our own culture where the word "rain" can be interpreted differently. their very existence would not be possible. The bride and groom who are prepared for an outdoor wedding view this news with a negative connotation. If the local weather station forecasts a "rain" shower for tomorrow. For example the Bible speaks of keeping and 16 . while to the farmer in the middle of a drought season. whose culture and lifestyle were very different than our own. with a circumstantial biasness. "dinner" was the main meal of the day eaten at noon and a light "supper" was eaten in the evening. Many times our cultural influence will give a different definition to words that was not intended by the Biblical authors. dinner is the main meal eaten in the evening. but the interpretation of the word rain will be influenced by the context of the culture. different people will interpret the word "rain" in different ways. our culture and lifestyle often influence our interpretation of the words and phrases of the Bible.Ancient Hebrew Language and Alphabet Why study the Ancient Hebrew language and culture? The Hebrew people. wrote the Bible between 1. it has a positive connotation. To the Ancient Hebrew nomads the word "rain" was usually equated with "life" since without it. The words "keep" and "break" are usually interpreted as "obedience" and "disobedience". Will you cherish his commands or throw them on the ground and walk on them? A people's language is very related to their culture. One of these groups is the desert nomad of the Middle East who still live much the way Abraham did over 3. opening the door to their manner of speech and alphabets. How do we study the Ancient Hebrew language and culture? Archeologists who uncover Ancient artifacts study the Ancient cultures.000 years ago. protect.

The most notable text of the Ancient Hebrews is of course the Bible. which they have recorded in the Bible. which will give us a deeper.

lives. What happened to this Ancient Hebrew thought and culture? Around 800 BCE. This was a very tumultuous time as the two vastly different cultures collided. Our own American culture and even the Modern Hebrew culture in Israel today are strongly influenced by the Greek culture.Hebrew Thought ____________________________________ In the world. influenced all following cultures including the Roman and European cultures. Both of these cultures view their surroundings. . Around 200 BCE the Greeks began to move south causing a coming together of the Greek and Hebrew culture. there are two major types of cultures. and West (Greek). which has adopted a western culture. Over the following 400 years the battle raged until finally the Greek culture won and virtually eliminated all traces of the Ancient Hebrew culture. and purpose in ways that would seem foreign to the other. more closely related to today’s Orientals than Americans or even Modern day Hebrews in Israel. the Greek culture arose in the north. The Ancient Hebrews were Eastern thinkers. The Greek culture then in turn.

Why do we find these abstract words in a passage of 20 . but here we will confine our focus on those differences that impact the interpretation of words. smelled. streams of water. abounding in love”. Abstract thought is the expression of concepts and ideas in ways that cannot be seen. anger and love are all abstract words. touched. The words compassion. smelled. grace. All five of the senses are used when speaking. Slow to anger. Abstract thought is a foreign concept to the Ancient Hebrew mind. Examples of Abstract thought can be found in Psalms 103:8. which yields its fruit in season. In order to understand the Ancient Hebrew culture in which the Bible was written in. writing and reading the Hebrew language. tasted and/or heard. tree. An example of this can be found in Psalms 1:3. tasted or heard. “The LORD is compassionate and gracious.Ancient Hebrew Language and Alphabet As 21st Century Americans with a strong Greek thought influence. Ancient Hebrew thought views the world through the senses (concrete thought). Abstract vs. Concrete thought is the expression of concepts and ideas in ways that can be seen. touched. concrete thought Greek thought views the world through the mind (abstract thought). In this passage the author expresses his thoughts in concrete terms such as.
