A great turnout for our Junior Presentation Night which coincided with the Crows AFL Preliminary Final game. The ABA Men were disappointed as they believed that they were a big chance to take out the title, but lost a couple of close games. A great response was given to newly inducted Life Members Blake Truslove and Peter Leach who was starting his 60th Birthday celebrations a day early.

Jim Drake and Steve Wormald raised the bar higher again and we already have suggestions on how to make it even better. The decorations set up by senior Group (+ Drakes) set the scene. It was great to see some of the past greats of the club who are now at the club coaching along with some new additions, including Peter Ali, Mike McKay, Paul Bell, Vicki Valk, Kayelee Stuart, Trudy Shefeld (player also) and Graham Kubank enjoy the night. A great response was given to newly inducted Life Members Blake Truslove and Peter Leach who was starting his 60th Birthday celebrations a day early. The Youth League teams now feel that they are a real part of the function and it was pleasing to see them embrace the night. Feedback suggests that next year will be even bigger, so bring it on! The ABA Men were disappointed as they believed that they were a big chance to take out the title, but lost a couple of close games. Junior Once again a great turnout for our Junior Presentation Night which coincided with the Crows AFL Preliminary Final game. We expected a few people to venture upstairs to the bar check the score on the TV, but the response was much better than expected and kept Darrel Simmons so busy that he missed most of the presentations. Thanks to the JLG for setting up the stadium to the usual standard and Darryl Noye excelled as the MC again- he must be looking for a regular gig! We went through 28Kg of sausages and countless loaves of bread - thanks to cooks and preparers of the gourmet feast! The response from ABA players was once again much appreciated, especially Patrick Thomas (& family) who must have had sore arms after collecting numerous awards at the Senior Night. Blake Truslove was also popular and assisted the club with supply of trophies (although he was a little disappointed that he had no idea of his impending Life Membership and did not supply his own trophy) -- suck it up Blake (lol) All trophy recipients are listed in this newsletter and we thank the players, coaches (no team without them), team managers, parents & supporters who we could not do without. The club also had a number of players achieve State recognition this year and they are named within this newsletter. The WABC Vic Robinson Junior Coaching Award for Boys was awarded to Rhys Daddow, while the girls equivalent, was awarded to Morgan Treloar. It is great for our club that both recipients are young West Adelaide players also. Junior While it may have not been our most successful year in respect to teams participating in nals, many teams were very close and we will only get better. The U18 D3 Boys were Premiers and well done to Wayne Warnest (coach) who has accepted the position of Youth League Div 4 coach and whose wife Julie is an active part of our JLG. U18 D3 boys Team Manager - Michelle Marshall Players - Matthew Parker, Alec Osborn, Harrison Nelli, Gorgan Stefanovski, Marley Warnest, Jesse Godfrey, Nathan Iovine, Shane Batty. Also, our U12 Girls coached by Morgan Treloar did well to make the Grand nal, while the U12 Div2 Girls (coach Trudy Shefeld) and U16 Div1 Girls (coach Andrew Nowak) played in Preliminary Finals Senior Due to changes in the BSA Program last year, the 2011 Bearcat Presentation Night (date pre-booked) was held prior to the DIV 2 Grand Finals. The West Adelaide team were successful as PREMIERS These players were recognised (a little bit late unfortunately) on the recent night. The Team was : Jamie Granger, Adam (Finch) Pearce, Kurtis Phillips, Danny Phillips, Paul Rankin, Anthony Spud Spadavecchia, Dan (the man) Zacharjak and Ben Vordermaier, Shane Crothers Also within the Senior program for 2012, WABC saw the Div2 Men and Women both lose very close Grand Finals (1 lucky roll may have assisted), while the Div4 Men lost a tight Prelim Final, The Youth team Men Black did well to make the Plemin Final. WABC JUNIORS HOT WEATHER POLICY The clubs policy is on the website www.bearcats.net.au. However, for U16 Div & 2 teams, the following is what we have decided on. If The Advertiser shows that days expected maximum temperature to be 37 degrees or above, there will be no training. If The Advertiser predicts below 37 (ie 34, 36 etc), and actual temperature rises above 37 degrees, training will be held. It is up to parents discretion as to whether their child trains on this day. Coaches will be in attendance and common sense says to bring extra uids. Should forecast temp be 37 degrees and a late cool change come in, training will not be held (insufcient time to contact all) This arrangement applies to week night training only, as it is most unlikely that the temperature will reach 37 degrees by 9.30am on a Sunday morning. Any queries, please contact your coach or Junior Coaching Director In regard to games, the club is guided by the BSA policy applicable at the time, but usually games will be held, except in cases of extreme heatwaves. wA8c 1rodIIoos commI @uIz NIjh 1h wA8c 1rodIIoos commI wouId IIk o hook h cIub mmbrs ood frIods for hIr suppor Io mokIoj hIs o jro oIjh, wIh 00 oods roojIoj from ]uoIors o 8oIors ood LIf Hmbrs. Basketball NEWS Nov 2012.indd 4 18/10/12 2:26 PM WABC Junior Coaches Basketball Liasion Manager The Executive Committee and JLG have long appreciated the tiresome and (mostly) thankless roles performed by our Junior Coaching Directors. To assist the people in these roles and provide some direction within our program, Phil Rennie has offered his experience and knowledge to support the Junior Coaching Directors and work with them to provide our coaches, be it Div 6 or Div 1, some further direction and pathways to assist both players and coaches moving into the future. Things are already moving and Phil is utilizing the great experience from with our coaching ranks, plus external sources to ensure the success of the West Junior program, continuing into our strong Senior program with a pathway to ABA representation and further. Below is Phils rst report on the Junior Program and it reads well for our future program. Things will not happen overnight, but Phil, Junior Coaching Directors, & John Pearce have plans which are exciting. I trust you enjoy it and offer your support to the program and see the results over the coming seasons. We have now commenced the new Summer Season for Season 2012/2013. The enthusiasm is high and the Expectations of coaches is promising. Remember to all, enjoy the game and Good Luck for the coming season. Now to re-cap on what has happened over the last six months. Our boys JDO, Denis Jones did not wish to continue within that role and asked the JLG to explore a replacement for that position. As most of you would know by now, David Gould accepted the position once he was approached. The girls JDO, Andrew Nowak has agreed to continue his ne work for the club. On behalf of both the Executive and the JLG, a warm hearted thank you to Denis and Daphne for there commitment to the program. Denis has been a long standing loyal servant to our club and we are grateful he continues on in the role as our Division 1 boys coach in the U/14 grade. David Gould has list of achievements as long as my arm. In brief, he has represented Australia at six Paralympics, 5 times as a player and once as an assistant coach. He has represented the state in Wheelchair Basketball for over twenty years and was captain for both state and country. The Rollers (Mens Wheelchair Basketball Team ) won a gold medal in 1996 which was a very special moment in Davids career as he was captain of the team. He currently is employed with Basketball Australia and has just returned from the London Paralympic Games where David was assistant coach of the Australia Womens Team (GLIDERS) who won a Silver Medal. We are very fortunate to have a man with his knowledge and abilities involved with the Bearcats and he has some great ideas to see the bearcats move forward. Welcome David and please make yourself known to him and his family. As coaches, through the Direction of our JDOs, we have implemented a defensive plan for all grades and we will look at creating an offensive plan in the near future. Our feeling on this, is if we can have a basic model in place, it will make the transition into grades a lot easier. This is a model that is a work in progress, so if you see some grades doing the same thing, this letter will give you an idea of what is happening. This will be applicable to both boys and girls programs and it was fantastic to see the support and enthusiasm at the rst coaches session on Sunday October 7th To all players, I wish you all the very best for the coming seasons and to all parents I pass on our thanks for being part of this great club. Cheers Phil Rennie Basketball NEWS Nov 2012.indd 5 18/10/12 2:26 PM Basic shots include the one-hand set shot, free throw, jump shot, three-point shot, hook shot, lay-up, and runner. These shots share certain basic mechanics, including sight, balance, hand position, elbow-in alignment, shooting rhythm, and follow-through. The best way to develop your shot is to concentrate on only one or two mechanics at a time. SIGHT Focus your eyes on the basket, aiming just over the front of the rim for all except bank shots. Use a bank shot when you are at a 45-degree angle to the backboard. A 45-degree angle falls within the distance between the box and the middle hash mark on the lane line. The distance for the bank angle--called the 45-degree funnel- -widens as you move out. For shooting a bank shot, aim for the top near corner of the box on the backboard. Sight your target as soon as possible and keep your eyes focused on the target until the ball reaches the goal. Your eyes should never follow the ight of the ball or your defenders hand. Concentrating on the target helps eliminate distractions such as shouting, towel waving, an opponents hand, or even a hard foul. BALANCE Being in balance leads to power and rhythmic control in your shot. Your base, or foot position, is the foundation of your balance, and keeping your head over your feet (base) controls your balance. Spread your feet comfortably to shoulder width and point your toes straight ahead. Pointing your toes straight aligns your knees, hips, and shoulders with the basket. The foot on the side of your shooting hand (right foot for a right-handed shot) is forward. The toe of your back foot is aligned with the heel of the foot on your shooting side (toe-to-heel relationship). Flex your legs at the knees. This gives crucial power to your shot. Beginning and fatigued players often fail to ex their knees. To compensate for the lack of power from not using their legs, they tend to throw the ball from behind the head or shove the ball from the hip. Both actions produce errors. Your head should be over your waist and feet. Your head controls your balance and should be slightly forward, with your shoulders and upper body inclining forward toward the basket. Your shoulders should be relaxed. HAND POSITION Hand position is the most misunderstood part of shooting. It is vital to start and nish your shot with your shooting hand facing the basket (behind the ball). Placing the non-shooting hand under the ball for balance is also important. This position, with the shooting hand facing the basket (behind the ball) and the non-shooting hand under the ball, is called the block-and-tuck. It leaves your shooting hand free to shoot the ball, rather than having to balance and shoot the ball. Place your hands fairly close together. Relax both hands and spread the ngers comfortably. Keep the thumb of your shooting hand relaxed and not spread apart to avoid tension in your hand and forearm. A relaxed hand position (like a handshake) forms a natural cup, enabling the ball to contact the pads of your ngers and not your palm. Place your non-shooting (balance) hand slightly under the ball. The weight of the ball balances on at least two ngers: the ring nger and the little nger. The arm of your balance hand should be in a comfortable position, with the elbow pointing slightly back and to the side. Your shooting hand is turned toward the basket behind the ball, your index nger directly at the balls midpoint. The ball is released off your index nger. On a free throw, you have time to align your index nger with the valve or other marking at the midpoint of the ball. Developing ngertip control and touch leads to a soft, accurate shot. ELBOW IN ALIGNMENT Hold the ball comfortably in front of and above your shooting-side shoulder between your ear and shoulder. Keep your shooting elbow in. When your shooting elbow is in, the ball is aligned with the basket. Some players do not have the exibility to place the shooting hand behind the ball facing the basket while keeping the elbow in. In this case, rst place your shooting hand behind the ball facing the basket, then move the elbow in as far as your exibility allows. RHYTHMICAL SHOOTING MOTION Shoot the ball with a smooth, evenly paced, rhythmical lifting motion. Shooting involves synchronizing the extension of your legs, back, shoulders, and shooting elbow and the exion of your wrist and ngers. The initial force and rhythm for your shot come from a down-and-up motion of your legs. Start with your knees slightly exed. Bend your knees and then fully extend them in a down-and-up motion. Saying the key words down and up from the start of your shot until the release of the ball will trigger the down-and-up action of your legs, providing rhythm and force for your shot. Your legs and shooting arm work together. As your legs go up, your arm goes up. As your legs reach full extension, your back, shoulders, and shooting arm extend in a smooth, continuous upward direction. It is vital to keep the ball high with your shooting hand toward the basket. Use the down-and-up motion of your legs for rhythm rather than lowering the ball for rhythm. Keeping the ball high fosters a quick release and also provides less chance for error. As your arm goes up, the ball is tipped back from your balance hand to your shooting hand. A good guide is to tip the ball back only until there is a wrinkle in the skin between your wrist and forearm. This angle provides a quick release and consistent follow-through. Direct your arm, wrist, and ngers straight toward the basket at a 45- to 60-degree angle, extending your shooting arm completely at the elbow. The nal force and control of your shot comes from exing your wrist and ngers forward and down. Release the ball off your index nger with soft ngertip touch to impart backspin on the ball and soften the shot. Keep your balance hand on the ball until the point of release. The amount of force you should impart to the ball depends on the range of the shot. For short distances, the arm, wrist, and ngers provide most of the force. Long-range outside shots require more force from your legs, back, and shoulders. Smooth rhythm and a complete follow-through will also improve long-range shooting. FOLLOW - THROUGH After releasing the ball off the index nger, keep your arm up and fully extended with the index nger pointing straight to the target. The palm of your shooting hand should be turned down and the palm of your balance hand should be turned up. Keep your eyes on your target. Exaggerate your follow- through. Hold your arm up in a complete follow-through position until the ball reaches the basket, then react to the rebound or get into defensive position. Holding your follow-through until the ball reaches the basket is not only good mechanics, but it also makes you look and act like a shooter and increases condence. SHOOTING MECHANICS Mandatory Report of Child Abuse As the WABC is involved with the responsibilty of coaching and caring for children, we fall under this category. It is something that the club treats very seriously and are looking at the best ways to implement action plans. We have a parent,(Senior Constable First Class) Paul Bryant who has offered his time and assistance to the club in presenting ideas to the club which is much appreciated. In the meantime, the WABC thanks June Gee and Tania Madigan for offering to help out as contacts for Certied Mandatory Reporting Ofcers. There will be courses advised of, and conducted within our club in the near future, but this notice is to provide awareness to our members. Grants Ofcer There are numerous grants available during the year from Local, State and Federal Governments for a number of projects which the bearcats are applicable for, but mainly due to a lack of time, cannot apply for. if you or anybody you are aware of, has the time to assist the club with the Grant Applications (info will be supplied), please contact somebody involved with our Exec Committee or JLG. Bar Assistance We have been lucky and grateful that our Senior Div3 Men, Steve Wormald and Brenton Coppick have manned the Club Bar ob ABA and Junior Div1 home games. If you are able to assist the club by manning the bar (even for 2 hours) on a weeknight, or during Junior Div2 games on Friday nights, please contact Steve, Brenton or Darrel Simmons and we will appreciate your help. Cheap 36ers Ticket Offer Following on from the big Night of Nights Celebration, the West Adelaide Basketball Club 1982 NBL Champions will be presented on court at 1/2 time during the 36ers home game on Sunday 2nd December. Prior to the 36ers game, a Curtain Raiser game will be provided by WABC U10 boys and girls, which will be good fun for the players and spectators. The club has 200 tickets available at the special price of $10 each, so please be aware of this opportunity coming soon. Basketball NEWS Nov 2012.indd 6 18/10/12 2:26 PM Thanks to Harrison Nelli for work with club newsletter, especially demand for WABC teams and his own Year 12 commitments. Congrats to David Spear on appointment as SA Metro U18 State Boys Coach, with Mike McKay as his trusted assistant. Let me introduce myself, my name is David Gould and have just been appointed Boys Coaching Director. I have been involved in basketball for over forty years, rstly as a player when I was 7, playing for South Adelaide Panthers as well as church, and social basketball. At the age of 11 I was selected to represent South Australia in the U12 state team. At the age of 12 I was involved in a shooting accident which put me in a wheelchair. At the age of 19 I was chosen to play Wheelchair Basketball for Australia at the 1984 Paralympics. I was lucky enough to attend 5 Paralympic games and 5 World Championships over an 18 year career. Since 2006 I have been coaching able body basketball (girls & boys) at district clubs since my daughters have been playing. Both my daughters, Ashlee, and Holly play at West. Im looking forward to developing and working on the boys side of the program to once again be a force in basketball in South Australia. As I dont know everyone please come up and introduce yourself. I personally would like to say a BIG THANK YOU to Denis for all his hard work for this club over many years. Organizing a basketball club of this size with so many teams requires many people to be involved. As we are still looking for a couple of coaches if anyone is able to assist please contact me on the following number. 0432150190 or by email...
