The Mayan Long Count Calendar draws to a close on 12/21/12.

You may have read the predictions, seen the movies, heard the 1987 REM song It’s the End of the World as We Know It (and I feel fine)...we just think it’s a great reason to have a party! The Standard Clams will entertain us with jazzy selections from the Great American Songbook by such artists as Bobby Darin, Ray Charles, Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett (to name a few). They’ll even throw in a few swingin’ holiday songs! Proceeds will benefit the University Club Foundation. Tickets are $50 each, which includes appetizers, international food stations, dessert and coffee. Drinks may be charged to member accounts, or tabs may be settled with cash or credit card. You may also claim your tickets in advance, while helping us meet our fundraising goals, by becoming a member of the Individual Honorary Committee at $100 each, or by supporting the event as a Corporate Sponsor (see current list of supporters on page 3). Even if you can’t attend, it’s a great time to make a year-end contribution to the Foundation. We hope you’ll join us! Reservations can be made by calling the Club at 463-1151 or visit our blog www.UClubEvents.blogspot.com

Host a holiday get-together The University Club is the perfect place for all your business and social needs, whether you're planning a gettogether with family, meeting friends for a drink, or setting up your company’s holiday party. We can accommodate from 1-150, depending on the type of event and are happy to work with you to individualize your experience. We offer a bevy of reasonably priced menu options, friendly, courteous service and flexibility in planning. All you have to do is sit back, enjoy and accept the compliments! There are still some dates available. Don’t forget, as a member you can sponsor events for other people so spread the word about the club. Call John Hess today at 518-463-1151 to make arrangements for your event!

Complimentary light hors d’oeuvres will be available in the Grille Room beginning at 5:30 p.m. Dinner will be served until 9:00 p.m. Reservations are required. Please call the Front Desk at 463-1151.

"In ordinary life we hardly realize that we receive a great deal more than we give, and that it is only with gratitude that life becomes rich." - Dietrich Bonhoeffer The holidays are here and, for many of us, it is a time to count our blessings and express gratitude to those who touch our lives. I hope you will join me in doing just that by contributing to this year’s Annual Employee Holiday Fund. We are fortunate to have a great group of people working for us; and though we see many of them when we visit the clubhouse, there are still others who work quietly and efficiently behind the scenes making sure the club is clean, the food is delicious, the bills get paid, the bowling alleys work and the dishes are sparkling (not to mention a whole host of other unseen, but vital, tasks!) These employees are not part of the service charge distribution. Pledge cards are enclosed with this month’s billing statement. Please take a moment to fill one out and return it to the club. Your contribution is a tangible way to express your gratitude to the people who take care of us all year and truly make our club a “home away from home”. Sincerely,

According to RobertBurns.org, “Burns Suppers range from the stentoriously formal gatherings of esthetes and scholars to uproariously informal rave-ups of drunkards and louts. Most adhere, more or less, to some sort of time honored tradition including a “Scottish meal, the drinking of Scotch whisky and the recitation of works by, about, and in the spirit of the Bard.” Ours is definitely somewhere in between. The 2012 Burns Supper, our first ever, was a huge success! Before it was over people were asking when the next one would be! This year’s event will, once again, be hosted by Meredith Helgerson and promises to be even better than last year. Join us for haggis, whisky, songs, poems and delicious Scottish fare. Mark your calendar and make plans to be there. Full details in next newsletter.
