House Warming
HOMING IN!
The article on renting a house in the last issue of TIHG was very interesting and a pleasure to read. It was well written and covered every aspect, right from budgeting to the rent agreement! A must-read article for all those who are new to a city and need to rent a house. I hope we get to read more such user-friendly articles frequently. Rajan Kambli, Navi Mumbai

Our readers write in

IT’S THAT TIME OF THE YEAR AGAIN!
As a loyal reader of TIHG, I am really waiting for this year’s anniversary issue! The last five anniversary editions have been fabulous and I have always been pleasantly surprised by the bathroom and kitchen specials. I usually keep them aside and refer to them through the year... I hope this year we get something extra as well! Wish The Ideal Home and Garden team all the best and I look forward to the latest anniversary issue eagerly. Vasundhara Rajan, Chennai, Tamil Nadu

DIWALI GIFT!
My entire family is waiting to see what TIHG gives us this Diwali, as we know that this is the time we get the anniversary issue! Every year we get something special, so I hope that trend continues this year as well. I love the visual treat and wealth of informative articles that TIHG gives me every month and I wish the team all the very best. Anamika Deshpande, Raigad, Maharashtra

THE RIGHT PROFILE
I am glad to see that now architects are being featured in TIHG. It is always interesting to read what the professionals have to say and get to know the latest trends and design ideas from them. Is it possible to include more than one architect every month? Perhaps an interior designer as well? Of course the best thing would be if TIHG starts a Q&A page where readers can interact directly with the architects... Krutika Amlani, Gandhinagar, Gujarat

LIGHTS AND ACTION
We all know and agree with how the emergence of light has changed the way in which we perceive the world. And all the articles in the Lighting Special (September 2012) were really special in that sense. Every nuance was clearly explained and what I loved specifically was that it wasn’t limited to just the latest trends... the articles went on to explain which fixtures worked best with which décor, wall colour etc. A very helpful issue! Alison Pareira, Calangute, Goa
Send us your bouquets as well as brickbats at tihg@nextgenpublishing.net! The best letter of the month stands to win a hamper worth ` 3,000 from Confluence Elite — The Concept Store, where designer Manasi Manjrekar showcases her funky yet functional furniture and accessories! The November

hamper includes a multi-coloured dream catcher and a tall gold rimmed hurricane jar candle with

two tea lights. So get writing now!

CLEAR CONCEPTS As a child, drawing came naturally to me. I believe that drawing by hand leads us to design spaces we never imagined possible. It allowed me to explore various options of forms and outlines. Over the years, an eye for detail and functionality develops giving us a cosmopolitan perspective and vision. Nothing is more exciting than creating a direct experience of shape, space, materials, light, sequences and rhythm.

38 The Ideal Home and Garden November 2012

ARCHITECT PROFILE
DESIGN ESSENTIALS Design for me is generating living spaces. It is all about satisfying clients and offering an atmosphere that speaks for itself. I am always trying to find a creative and special way of living and working within a space. Design is not only about form and function. It is made by man... For man. Spaces should be created to be admired and enjoyed by everyone. I believe that design should be logical, clear, orderly and clean. It is essential to work closely with clients to understand their needs and requirements as it helps reach an original and personal solution. HOME SWEET HOME A home interior space is an amalgamation of physical and mental balance… A mirror of our habits. A place where we relish the good life and invest a great deal of our resources. To make all this happen, it’s necessary to have respect for the design as it materialises. After all, it the most influential architectural space in our lives! CHARACTER BUILDING Yes, design is far beyond of what we

imagine. It is not just the skill of the designer that matters. Materials, lighting and furniture also contribute their own character and personality. And then there is art! The aim is always to try and surpass the evolving expectations of clients. To achieve that objective, architects add their own style. The design has to be intelligent, friendly and mature.

THE ROAD AHEAD Every architect should have a social commitment to make buildings harmonious with nature. Design should not only meet the basic needs for which they are created, but must also provoke agreeable feelings in the viewer. As always the road ahead is exciting with change being the only constant.

MY MEDIUMS As an architect, I get ample opportunities to approach design differently. For me, mediums mean many things including operating in multiple sites, different circumstances, diverse urban or rural settings and a sense of belonging to different generations of clients. To creatively complement design with client’s needs, I make use of the experience I’ve accumulated over the last 20 years. The effort is to always provide clients with better living and working spaces.

over a magnanimous area of 25,000 sq.ft, TFR’s signature style arrests you at every step. Even at first

glance, you will be awestruck by the sea of home décor accents and furniture available here.

STORE PROFILE
A celebration of form and function, the store showcases varied themes in a bid to give their consumers the freedom of choice. Co-founder, Aditya Gupta says that their collection is tailor-made for elegant interiors and effortlessly intertwines quality, craftsmanship and product design. “The look you choose for your home’s interior can be inspired by many things and here we have tried to create themes that are inspirational,” he says. PICTURE PERFECT Myriad shades of brown are interestingly interspersed across the store. “According to the client’s brief, we created a store that is comfortable and welcoming without being overzealous. Chic, chrome finished and clean lined, the store represents a collection of ideas ranging from classics to contemporary,” explains Architect Vistasp Bhagwagar, who completed the project in six months. The furniture pieces rest on marble chip flooring, which is confined to the display areas, helmed with bamboo poles. The pebbled platforms are at a higher level than the circular timber paths. High ceilings in a rustic and raw finish add to the store’s aesthetics and showcase circular discs and a trail of lights. The store is well-lit with natural as well as ambient light. “No retail store is complete without perfect illumination that brightens its display. Keeping natural light as the key source of light, we have installed 25 watt lamps that are artistically fixed to drift wood rafters,” he says. VIBRANT COLLECTIONS Matching the evolved tastes of the discerning consumer, the range successfully combines design and function. The designs are innovative and classic with a contemporary edge. From living room furniture to beds, chests, rugs, dinning tables, antique furniture and

accessories — the store stocks them all. “All the solid wood furniture is manufactured at our workshops. We also customise sofas, dinning tables, chairs and other hardwood furniture,” shares Aditya. GREEN REPUBLIC TFR makes a conscious effort to nurture an eco-friendly approach. According to Aditya, “We need to look at a greener way of life. We are consciously implementing planetfriendly activities that include recycling, recreating and reusing. As we are in the business of aesthetics, we make it a point to create beautiful and functional items with waste wood, instead of burning it.”

PEAS IN A POD Of course, expansion is on Aditya’s mind. “We are just starting our journey with our first store in Noida. We have another store on the Mehrauli-Gurgaon Road (in Delhi) that’s under construction and intend on opening stores all over India. It’s about time the average Indian home got a facelift!” he sums up.

GO BOLD
One would think Indian hues are all about being bright and traditional, but bold colours like black and orange also complement the country’s visual well. Your décor need not be all dark, but it can be accentuated with the right accessories in shades of black and orange to get the same look.

veryone loves a good comeback, especially one that’s highly Victorian! During the late 1800s, home interiors had a distinct style, elements of which continue to influence décor till date. So one of the most evident features of the Victorian Era is all set to make a dainty reappearance — the oh-so-very elegant lace.

ROMANCING

LACE!
Simple yet intriguing and utterly feminine, the romance that humble lace can add is virtually unmatchable. Lace furnishings and accents can effortlessly turn the modern and contemporary home to a graceful and warm haven. These days, incorporating lace in home décor is easy and rather interesting.

Add charm and grace to your interiors with ethereal lace, which is making a comeback on the home décor front!

The subtle colours and gentle intricacy have inspired an array of designers and artists, who have replicated the intrinsic patterns of the good ol’ lace in their work. Be it metal, wood, wall, paper or even plastic, lace motifs have made their pretty way to every conceivable surface. But the eternal charm of the traditional open weave fabric remains unchanged... Ardent blogger and lace lover Cindy Kihn-Santiago has done up her Campbell, California home beautifully with traditional lace. Right from all-lace curtains to cute

lace crochet doilies, Cindy’s elegant and romantic home has it all. “I love lace, especially vintage lace! I have it all over my home. From lace napkins and hankies tucked here and there, hand crocheted lace doilies hanging from shelves, vintage lace table cloths, pillowcases, lampshades and curtains. I love them so much that I don’t even mind all the hand washing and ironing,” blogs Cindy. She uses lace in its more

traditional avataar but the daring bunch can also experiment. Wrap your precious and vintage gifts in a nude colour lace cloth. You can bring it all together by topping them off with a lace ribbon bow. Neha Vij, Founder and Creative Head of Auro Candles suggests a simple and charming DIY lighting solution. “Set the mood for a romantic dinner or a cosy night in with candle votives slipped into a little something special —

lace trims that let the light dance through its open weaves! This pretty idea will add charm to any room or tablescape.” You could also turn a simple photo frame into an elegant home décor accent that will get your neighbours talking! Stick pretty strips of lace onto thick coloured paper and place them in classy frames around your home. There are several such simple décor solutions that can instantly uplift your home. For instance, get your hands on a delicate lace ribbons and use them as curtain tie-backs or a decorative addition to a dull flower vase!

Adding lace to the dinner table is a mood-setter! The trick is to team light coloured lace with bright modern colours. Bina Bedi, Creative Director of Settings by B loves the depth lace lends to a table setting.

“Lace overlays on top of a table cloth adds a little bit of vintage flair. Black lace over a shimmery fabric or red fabric can set the mood for an elegant dinner. White lace over a pastel or jewel tone fabric is great for an outdoor luncheon,” she says. Several designers use lace patterns in their collection of tableware. Take Vera Wang’s Wedgwood cutlery collection — ‘Vera Lace’ that uses beautiful gold lace trim patterns. Closer home, we loved accessory designer Mudita Mull’s Antique Lace Collection where she incorporates lace motifs into metal home décor accessories! Welcome to the world of lace!

s big and impressive as the stately animal it is named after, the newly opened Club Rhino promises an intense experience that will certainly make you go back for more! Located in Gurgaon, it is spread across an extensive area of 12,500 sq.ft on the top floor of South Point Mall. A gigantic stage for live performances, a bar that overlooks the lush outdoors and an outdoor dining area with an amazing view of the city’s skyscrapers are just a few reasons you should head there. Conceived by Jitender Janghu and Jitender Kumar, Rhino was designed by their project partner, Arfin Zukof.

Tirelessly innovative, the design evolves from a number of factors, including brainstorming and planning the basic functional requirements planned for the space. “We wanted Rhino to exemplify the right balance of frenzy and comfort,” they say. “Inspired by the wild Rhino, the aesthetic was conceptualised to evoke a feeling of earthy, raw solidity with a timeless appeal. We extensively used natural materials in order to expose the innate character of the material. A palette of wood, iron, copper and granite was juxtaposed with elegant touches of lighter materials like rope, fabric and screens to create interest,” shares Arfin.

Add plants to your décor as they are an attractive supplement to the rest of the elements. Before adding a house plant, do consider the amount of light in the room, the purpose (whether purely decorative etc.), placement of the plant and the conditions within which it will grow.

THE CHALLENGES Though the project was completed in an impressive span of just four months, it also had its own problems. “A tin roof, two side glass and just four inches of partition wall, made sound proofing difficult. To add to that, the space was divided in two halves, one part with a 14 feet ceiling and the other almost 35 feet! All this put together created a lot of sound leak and distortion. For multi layers of sound proofing, we laid a three inch grid of glass wool, topped it with two inches of perforated pin board and then finally covered it with a six inch wide pine wood plank,” explains Arfin. The plumbing was another issue that induced sleepless

nights... “We had to raise the entire inside flooring by nine inches, in order to ensure that there is no flooding,” explaines Arfin. AS GRAND AS IT GETS The décor style is elaborate yet displays various natural forms. High walls in copper and wood jostle for space with lower ones that are textured in white. And to give a feel of sand blasted granite, Arfin used black vitrified tiles. Another interesting highlight is the spread of warm white lights. Custom-made lights at the bar have been specifically designed with linen fabric dressed on them. The furniture boasts of fully dried teak wood, with matte polish to soften the natural wood grains.

Gardens blossom into beautiful pieces of art as soon as the temperature dips. With winter round the corner, plan ahead with these useful tips from our expert Harpreet Ahluwalia

lants need all the tender loving care that you can possibly give them. With the cold season sneaking up on us, it is important to consider the layout of your garden and plan well ahead of time. From hedges to the trim, to sow winter annuals, there is a lot of work in the garden. Your task is not only to identify the plants that will suit the climate, but also have an idea of how the annuals are going to fill your garden space.

P

Work well on your existing plants and make sure that they are thriving. Sweep up dead leaves and remove all the straggly bits. Prepare the beds for winter annuals with a mix of farm manure, leaf mould and Neem Khali (de-oiled cake of Neem seeds). Before planting the winter annuals, it is important to prepare the soil. So line your pots with well prepared soil mixture. As your

new plants grow, they will occasionally need pruning to correct structural problems – branches that grow at tight angles or to remove water sprouts. Continue with pruning shrubs and climbers. Transplant or re-pot your indoor plants if they have outgrown, are root bound or have stopped growing. Rose pots and beds should be properly cultivated after pruning and manuring as January is the time they will bloom. Put manure in hedges and evergreen shrubs. The lawn should be given a top dressing of fertilizer and urea mixed with neem cake. Cut the grass close to the ground October onwards.

1. Outfit a basic comfortable powder room, gather fresh towels, soap, magazines and extra toilet paper to create a cozy setting for guests. 2. Create a sultry mood by opting for dimmers that allow you to set the mood for a darker powder room. Small votive candles and tea lights would shine better when you know you can turn down the lights! 3. For bigger, brighter spaces, paint the rooms in lighter colours or opt for a wallpaper with small patterns on it. This gives it more depth and won’t make the space cramped. Keep everything around the basin minimal and allow for airy and bright lights. Try using a colour scheme of light blues or grays, giving the powder room a natural feel. 4.Go for bolder rooms with heavy patterned tiles or wallpaper, or by painting the accent wall a bolder colour. Play around with shapes of the bath fittings and experiment by displaying artwork in an organised manner. 5. dainty embroidered towels, crisply starched and folded, lying neatly in a wicker basket work wonders when trying to create personalised vintage décor. Group them with pastel coloured walls and interesting displays of vintage accents like clocks and paintings. The antique look can also be heightened with wooden cladding, brass taps and completed with a dry flower arrangement. 6.An all-white bathroom with pale colour accents shouts clean and healthy. Add soothing earthy tones to it for a more spa like atmosphere. One can have starkly modern powder room with a surrealistic glass or ceramic wash hand basin and blocked lines. 7. Create design trends using materials, textures and colours that reflect good taste and effort. Tiny touches, such as special knobs on drawers in the vanity area or antique towel hooks can make a large difference. 8. For a delicate feminine look, light pink and peach shades work wonders, while varying shades of steel gray can give a chic, all-male look to the bathroom.

Be it grand, petite, formal or friendly, here are a few easy tips to create different moods in your powder room!

n outdoor area is always a great place to unwind with family and friends. Here are some simple tips to pep your patio... FURNITURE FACE LIFT Make old outdoor furniture look new with spray paint, which comes in many colours and finishes. FABRICATED FUN Striped pillows and bright cushions give the outdoor space a more dynamic look. Floor pillows make for the perfect extra seating. A colourful, weather-resistant outdoor rug will liven up your patio and create a focus centre. You can also opt for a large umbrella that will add shade and brings colour overhead. LET THERE BE LIGHT Add night time ambience with outdoor lighting. Group pretty lanterns or string lanterns to brighten up a dark corner. To help protect the environment, choose solar products or low-voltage, energy-efficient bulbs or miniature tubes. GREENTHUMB Group flowerpots of various sizes together to make your patio look lush and beautiful. Mix flowers of different textures, leaf sizes, shades and types. You can also grow a small herb garden on your patio.

A

FLOWING AWAY Envelope your patio with soothing sounds with a water feature that includes a small re-circulating pump. BE SHADY Grow shade plants such as hostas and calladiums around your patio. They’ll provide a soothing retreat from the heat. Alternatively, a canopy over the patio will also create a shady oasis. FIRE FLIES A fire pit creates a warm gathering place on cool evenings. You can purchase a ready-made one or you make it yourself using materials such as flagstone slabs and small boulders. CURVED APPEAL Curved edges add character to a patio. They are also more relaxing than straight lines. FEED THE BIRDS Hang bird feeders around your patio’s perimeter to attract a variety of birds throughout the year. GRAND ENTRANCE A beautiful metal arch, gate or a couple of lengths of picket fencing will give your patio a charming entrance. Blend the entrance into your landscape with flowering and climbing plants.

here are three main areas to focus on when creating an ideal environment to enjoy television and film watching hours. SILENCE Simply put, your environment affects the sound quality. Your theatre should soundwizard be in an environment which is silent enough

T

for you to enjoy the fine details of a film’s soundtrack. High end home theatres achieve this by using a ‘floating shell’ room design (a box within a box) to fully isolate sounds from inside and outside the room. ACOUSTICAL ENVIRONMENT It is linked to the interior design of

the room. Internal acoustical treatment boosts clarity and gives an impression of enhanced space between the speakers and where you sit. Here, sound and space work together. MULTIMEDIA EQUIPMENT The final element in a great home theatre is the multimedia

equipment, which brings the music, sounds, and images to life in your home. A proper home cinema ‘surround sound’ experience requires a lot of power in the equipment to appreciate the full dynamic range of a sound track. For a dedicated home cinema, there is no real alternative to a video projector system.

As a kitchen is a busy work area, it needs comfortable and functional lighting. Drawers, cabinets, the plinth area or even the counter top are ideal for task and accent lighting. Light fixtures can also be concealed on top, under wall cabinets or installed in open troughs and layered ceiling areas that surround the entire kitchen space.

and CLEAN!
hough considered the heart and soul of a home, kitchens have this uncanny ability to attract and retain clutter. Cleaning up the kitchen is a part of the cooking process and it ensures a hygienic atmosphere to prepare your food in. Here are some easy ways to ensure that you keep every thing in order and bacteria at bay...

CLUTTER-FREE
T
chopping boards for meat and vegetables to reduce the spread of bacteria. Clean the meat chopping board extra carefully, especially after cutting chicken, as raw food has a higher tendency of containing bacteria. • Use one cloth for surfaces and another for dishes. Wash the cloth with hot water and, as appropriate, bleach. • Periodically wipe doorknobs, handles, buttons and controls, and light switches in and around your kitchen with cleaning agents. These are the surfaces that get touched the most in any house. Even if they seem clean to the naked eye, they may already be harbouring bacteria. common ingredients like vinegar, baking soda, water, lemons, and even kosher salt will get your kitchen sparkling. A hand held steamer is another quick fix for cleaning the kitchen! Once you put water in it, you’re good to go. The steam will remove food from ovens, oven-tops, microwaves, and sanitise counter tops and more. Coffee filters make great cleaners for counter tops and windows. They also double up as snack holders for treats like crackers, chips, cookies, and popcorn. Keep your stainless steel looking brand new by using baby oil or olive oil. Just a small dab on a soft cloth will erase any marks and help prevent new ones from sticking. A great way to disinfect your dish sponge is to put it into the microwave for 1 minute. A toothbrush is a great kitchen cleaning

tool. Use it to remove dirt and grime from the faucets and sink.

AVOID
• Contents or liquid items that can become contaminated by drinking out of the carton or bottle and placing it back in the fridge. • Jamming the fridge full of food prevents the circulation of cold air that keeps food items cold and slows the growth of bacteria. • Do not mix two or more cleaners that you might have at home. This is because of the potential danger posed by the combination of ammonia and bleach. • Sponges work well for cleaning, but also are a breeding ground for germs. Use your dish sponge only for the dishes and avoid keeping a sponge for wiping down counters. Instead, use paper towel sparingly, or consider using bar cloths or wash cloths to wipe counters.

SIMPLY DONE
• Remove all unnecessary clutter from the surfaces. Discard appliances and gadgets that you don’t use any more, as unused appliances tend to gather dust. • Keep your refrigerator clean and organised. Don’t make a habit of keeping food for too long in the fridge rotten food will breed bacteria, and may even contaminate fresh food that is kept in the same area. • Use a rubbish bin with a lid to keep odours at bay as an open bin will attract flies and other insects. Empty it as soon as it smells, even if it is not yet full. • Keep separate

CLEANING SOLUTIONS
• Use pantry ingredients to keep the kitchen clean as they are easy and economical. Using
