Definition (why?)
In Kali yuga, human beings will become dull owing to their indulgence in sinful deeds and, therefore, be considerable and expound a system of study for the persons who would be having slow perceptions and though which they could gain a clear knowledge about their happiness, sorrows and longevity merely by delineating the positions of planets in transit. (BPHS, CHAPTER 68)

akavarga is a system which comes directly from Sage Prara. Prara presented akavarga as a simple technique to be used in Kali yuga so people can easily make reasonable predictions. Aa means eight, ka refers to the ri and varga means division, hence eight types of divisions in the ri chart. Thus, in akavarga we draw eight charts, for seven planets and lagna.

Definition (Sthna & karaa)

Each of the eight charts have their special system of contribution, depending on the nature of the astakavarga, i.e. If one would draw the astakavarga of ukra, the contribution of each planet will indicate the supporting factors for marriage and relationships. In each of these vargas or charts, a positive contribution is called sthana. A negative contribution is called karana. For simplicity most authors restrict themselves to the use of bindu (dot) and rekha (line). In our parampara positive contribution is called bindu and negative is called rekha. Some authors are using the opposite terms; rekha for positive and bindu for negative contribution. We shall consider Bindu as auspicious for this work. Bindu will show actual strength of the Bhva/Graha, while the rekha will show the lack of the same.

Definition (what)
We use astakavarga to see what support is given from environment (grahas) for prosperity and potential of that particular graha and its significations. In another words, what can be done! So, we speak about the system which tells us benefic positions of lagna and seven planets with respect to each other. Prara tells us that this system will not contradict results of other systems. This statement indicates that its blind application may lead one in wrong direction . Its application must be balanced with the basic principles of astrology.
...results of this Shastra will neither contradict nor repeat the results propounded earlier and will benefit one and all. (BPHS, CHAPTER 68)

Calculation
Each planet has its own individual contribution in every astakavarga. Those places where there is no bindu or positive contribution, there will reside rekha or negative contribution. An example is given for Gurus contribution in the astakavarga of Srya.

Prastara AV
Prastara astakavarga shows the individual contribution of each planet in the particular astakavarga. Adding the numbers of each Bhva gives us bhinna astakavarga of BAV.

Bhinna AV
Bhinna astakavarga shows the total contribution of planets to each Bhva in the particular astakavarga. Adding the numbers of each Bhva for each of the eight vargas gives us sarva or samudaya astakavarga, also called SAV

Sarva AV
The Sarva-astakavarga can be used to determine the strength of a Bhva, but for fine tuning of predictions, the prastara astakavarga should be made. These vargas are later moderated through reductions performed. Readers are referred to standard literature

Srya in application
Prara states: Attributes like atma, deha and father are to be considered from the Sun. Srya is karaka for atma (here defined as atma jnana and hence spirituality), karaka for deha (health), Pitru (father), and more. The astakavarga of Srya will help us understand how our spirituality, health and other karakatvas of Srya are being supported by other planets. The Bhvas receiving contribution of Guru in the astakavarga of Srya will show the gurus influence in our spiritual matters.

Other karakas
Just as Gurus contribution shows the support we receive from spiritual leaders/priests in spirituality and health, so also the other planets will show the influence of their karakatvas in these matters. The contribution that Srya himself receives in his own astakavarga will show the people who are influencing the natives spirituality and health.
Health is seen in ri whilst spirituality is seen in vimsma. Individual astakavarga should be prepared for each varga.

Auspicious direction
The more planets contributing to a particular ri, will show the more support in the direction indicated by that ri. The ri or direction receiving the highest contribution of planets in the astakavarga of Srya, is the best direction to receive spirituality. This direction is ascertained after reductions.
