RATING THE 2012-2013 MODELS

I
ncluded here are Ratings on nearly 300
vehicles that CR has recently tested.
Within each category, they are ranked
by their overall road-test score.
To earn our Recommendation
( 0 ) vehicles must perform well in our
road tests; have average or better reliabil-
ity; and perform adequately if included
in safety tests conducted by the I nsur-
ance I nstitute for Highway Safety and the
National Highway Traffic Safety Admin-
istration (NHTSA).
The NHTSA has mandated that elec-
tronic stability control
(ESC), a proven life-sav-
ing feature, be included
as standard equipment
on all light vehicles
starting with the 2012
Scan this or see how.
Mak es model
model year.
Survey results include predicted reli-
ability, our forecast of how well a new car
is likely to hold up, based on data from
our 2011 Annual Auto Survey. Owner
satisfaction also comes from our annual
survey; it is based on a question where we
ask subscribers if they would definitely
buy or lease their vehicle again.
Owner cost is a Rating of the five-year
projected cost to own a vehicle, includ-
ing depreciation, fuel, interest, insurance,
maintenance/repair, and sales tax.
Fuel economy is the overall mileage a
vehicle achieved in our real-world tests,
based on results from several tests, and
reflects a realistic mix of city, country-
road, and highway driving.
An asterisk (*) means the powertrain
has changed since the last test.

REVIEWS OF THE 2012-2013 MODELS
T
his rundown of all the
major 2012-13 models can
start you on your search for
a new car, minivan, SUV, or
pickup. You'll find a sum-
mary of each model, often based on
recent road tests that are applicable to
this year's models.
Most models include C O N SUME R
R E P O R TS' predicted reliability rating,
an indication of how problematic we
expect a model to be. It is based on our
2011 Annual Auto Survey, where we
asked owners about any serious prob-
lems they've had with their vehicles
in the previous 12 months. These data
allow us to predict how well new cars
are likely to hold up.
R ecommended models ( 0 ) must
perform well in our road tests; have
average or better reliability; and
perform adequately if included in
safety tests conducted by the Insurance
Institute for Highway Safety and the
National Highway Traffic Safety Admin-
istration (NHTSA).
The NHTSA has mandated that
electronic stability control (ESC),
a proven life-saving feature, be in-
cluded as standard equipment on all
light vehicles starting with the 2012
model year.
Entries include, where available, the
date of the last road test for that model
published in CONSUMER REP ORTS mag-
azine. These road-test reports are also
available to subscribers of our website,
at ConsumerReports.org.

Description/with last road-test date

Based on the Honda Civic, the ILX has more luxurious teatures.
Three engines are available: a 2.0-liter, a 1.5-liter hybrid, and
a sporty 2.4-liter. Transmission choices are six-speed manual or
5-speed automatic, and a CVT with the hyrid. Nov. 2012
[ 1 Acura MDX The MDX has a refined and powerful 300-hp V5. It is more age and
' ' guieter than its predecessor. The third-row seat folds easiiy into the
floor and is a better fit for kids than adults. The dashboard is a sea
of tiny, similar-looking buttons. Crash-test resuits are impressive.
Juh. 2010
[ ] Acura RDX ^^^ redesigned RDX is much improved. The smooth V6 managed a
'' respectable 22 mpg overall. Handling is sound if not especiaiiy ag-
ile, and the ride is a little stiff. The cabin is a bit plain, but the con-
trois are simple to use. Reliability should be very good. Sep. 2012
Acura RLX The redesigned RL promises the comfort and luxury of a large
sedan in a mid-sized package. It will be available with front or all-
wheel drive. The AWD Hybrid will get a \/6 matched with a seven-
speed automated manual. The FWD version will have 310 hp. -

^^ ^^'^ small two-door coupe or convertible has a base 3.0-liter six-
cylinder. A turbocharged six-cylinder is optional. It is spectacular to
drive with excellent steering. Although snug, the interior features
high levels ot fit and finish. A sportier 135is is new. Oct. 2008
^^ The excellent redesigned 3 Series sedan has impressive handling,
ride comfort, quietness, and interior quality. The base four-cylinder
turbo performs well and averaged 28 mpg overall. A 3.0-liter six-
cylinder turbo is also available. Coupe, convertible, wagon, and V8-
powered M3 versions still use the old body style. Aug. 2012
Q The 5 Series is refined and relatively fuel efficient. Our tested turbo
six-cylinder had strong acceleration and the eight-speed automatic
is slick. The ride is impressive, but understeer and the slow and
vague steering makes handling disappointing. Interior fit and finish
is excellent. All-wheel drive is available. Nov. 2010
BMW 6 ^^ The 6 Series is available as a two-door coupe and convertible or
Series ^5 a four-door "coupe." This grand tourer is much sportier to drive
than its predecessor. Power comes from a 3.0-liter turbocharged
six or a 4.4-liter V8. The eight-speed automatic is very slick. -

competitors. The turbo V8 is smooth, refined, and punchy. Many
controls are complex and frustrating to use. The roomy, quiet cabin
Is impeccably finished and seat comfort is tops. Dec. 2011
BMW XI ^^ The XI five-seat compact SUV arrives this fall and slots below the X3
in price and size. Powertrains include the 300-hp, 3.0-liter turbo six-
cylinder and a 240-hp, turbocharged four-cylinder in both rear- and
all-wheel-drive versions. An eight-speed automatic is standard. -
BMW X3 NR The X3 boasts a well-finished, quiet, and comfortable cabin. The
taut ride is supple and well controlled. Handling is almost sports-
sedan like. Our tested 240-hp, turbo four-cylinder got a very good
23 mpg overall. A 300-hp, 3.0-liter turbo six-cylinder is optional.
Both use a smooth eight-speed automatic. Sep. 2012
BMW X5 The X5 has a stiff and choppy ride, particularly at low speeds.
Handling is capable and secure. Both gas engines deliver ample
acceleration. The transmission is quick to respond, but the compli-
cated shifter is frustrating. The interior is impeccably trimmed. The
diesel version got 22 mpg overall, but lacks refinement. Jun. 2012
BMW X6 ^^ Based on the X5, the coupe-like X6 seats only four passengers.
Most versions are powered by a turbocharged 3.0-liter turbo six-
cylinder, but a 4.4-liter V8 is also offered. AWO is standard. A high-
performance M version and a hybrid are available. -
BMW Z4 ^^ The sleek Z4's base 240-hp, turbocharged four-cylinder got 28 mpg
in our tests with the somewhat notchy six-speed manual. While the
car is quick and secure, its neatly finished cabin is snug and the
steering lacks feedback. The power retractable hardtop works well.
Turbo six-cylinders are optional, as is a seven-speed automatic.

T he G olf's 2 .5-liter five-cylinder engine gets a mediocre 2 4 mpg over-
all. T he diesel got an impressive 3 8 mpg in our tests with a manual.
T he steering is responsive and the car feels agile. T he ride is supple
and controlled. I nterior quality is impressive and feels solid. T he front
seats are supportive, but the rear is cramped. Mar. 201 0
T he'G T I is one of the best performing and most practical choices
among sporty cars. I t is agile and quick, with a gutsy turbocharged
2 .0 -liter four-cylinder engine that sounds good, all of which make
it fun to drive but not at the expense of comfort. May 201 0
T he Jetta sedan's handling lacks agility and interior fit and finish
is unimpressive, but the rear seat is roomy. T he base 2 .5-liter five-
cylinder engine gets a so-so 2 5-mpg overall. T he T D I diesel gets an
impressive 3 4 mpg overall but the D S G transmission is sometimes
jerky at low speeds. A turbocharged 2 .0 -liter four-cylinder G Ll
sports version is available. May 201 1 .
T he Jetta wagon continues with the older, bodystyle. I t has-a quiet,
composed ride and responsive handling, t)ut i ti s less agile than the
G olf hatchback, which uses the same platform. Acceleration is a bit
leisurely with the diesel, but with readily available power at low
revs most will find it adequate. Jan. 201 1

Volkswagen NR The Passat has a roomy cabin, particularly the rear seat. The lack-
Passat luster 2 .5- liter five- cylinder got 25 mpg overall, while the 2 .0 - liter
turbodiesel returned an impressiye 37 mpg. The car is quiet and
rides comfortably, but falls short on cornering grip. Feb. 2012
Volkswagen O ^^^ Tiguan offers a roomy rear seat, and has excellent fit and fin-
-Tlquan ish. Handling is agile and secure. The ride can be stiff with super
low profile tires. The 2.0-liter, turbo four- cylinder is smooth and '
punchy, and it yielded 21 mpg overall in our tests. FWD is standard,
with AWD available. Mar. 2012
Volkswagen NA The Touareg is a quiet and fairly agile SUV with a plush interior.
Touareg The V6 turbodiesel, mated to a smooth eight-speed automatic,
pulls strongly and is relatiyely refined. A hybrid model is new, and
the base engine is 3 .6-liter six-cylinder. It no longer has low-range,
off- road gearing. Jun. 2011 ^ ^
The Volvo C30 is a pleasant two- door hatchback. Power comes
from the turbocharged 2.5-liter, five- cylinder engine that delivers
good performance and 25 mpg overall. The manual transmission
is pleasant. Although the C30 steers nicely, handling isn't particu-
larly sporty. Oct. 2008
The C70 has a power-operated metal folding top that works well.
The car comes only with a turbocharged 2.S-liter, five- cylinder
engine. Handling is sound but unexceptional, and the ride is some-
what stiff. The interior is well finished, and features standard cur-
tain air bags that deploy from the doors. May 2008
The S60's fiye- cylinder engine can sound gruff but provides lively
acceleration and respectable fuel economy. The ride is taut and
steady. The T 6 with AWD is quick, agile, and refined. The interior
is quiet and nicely laid out, and the front seats are comfortable,
although the rear is tight and the trunk is small. Jul. 2011
Volvo S80 O ^'^^ ^ ^ doesn't deliver the level of performance or luxury expect-
ed in this class. Rear seat room is cramped and rear access is com-
promised. Front-wheel-drive S80s get a 3.2-liter six-cylinder, which
delivered 2 0 mpg overall in our testing. A turbocharged six-cylinder
is available on the all-wheel-drive version. Nov. 2007

The XC60 is pleasant to drive t)ut not very sporty. The ride is stiff,
but handling is responsiye and secure. Wind and road noise are weli
suppressed. The interior is nicely finished with high-quality materials.
The seats are comfortable but rear legroom is tight. Sep. 2009
The XC70 is an AWD wagon with a raised ride height. The pleasant
3.2-liter six-cylinder and six-speed automatic deliyer adequate per-
formance, but got just 18 mpg. A more powerful, turbocharged
engine is available. The ride is fairly stiff, and handling is secure.
- Inside, the cabin is quiet and nicely trimmed. Sep. 2008
Volvo XC90 This aging design is not very competitive. The 3.2-liter six-cylinder
gets an unimpressive 17 mpg oyerall. The ride is stiff and unsettled,
and handling lacks agility. The interior is flexible, but folding the tiny
third- row seat is a frustrating experience. Jun. 2012

RELIABLE USED CARS
FOR EVERY BUDGET
A
s owners hold on to their
vehicles longer, fewer late-
model used cars are avail-
able for sale. The result:
a limited supply and higher
prices. But there are still good buys to
be found. To steer you to the best bets,
these lists show the 2002 through 2011
vehicles, in four price categories, that
tested well when they were new and have
had above-average reliability.
Try to buy the newest vehicle that your
budget allows so that you can get the
most up-to-date safety features. To help,
we show the first year each model offered
electronic stability control as a standard
or optional feature. NA means that ESC
wasn't available.

DETAILED AUTO RELIABILITY
T
he charts on the following pages
give you a model's complete re-
liability picture for both its used
versions (2006 through 2011)
and the new one currently on
sale. These detailed reliability Ratings are
based on our 2011 Annual Car Reliability
Survey, for which we received responses
on 1.3 million vehicles.
The Annual Car Reliability Survey is sent
to subscribers of CONSUMER REPORTS and
ConsumerReports.org. Respondents report-
ed on any serious problems they had with
their vehicles in any of the trouble spots in-
cluded in the following charts, during the
previous 12 months. These were considered
serious because of cost, failure, safety, or
downtime. Because high-mileage vehicles
tend to have more problems than low-
mileage ohes, problem rates are standard-
ized to minimize differences related to mile-
age. The 2011 models were generally less
than six months old at the time of the sur-
vey and had been driven an average of about
3,000 miles. Models with insufficient data
are noted with a column of asterisks (*).

MAJOR REDESIGNS
A model year in bo ld iden-
tifies the year the model
was introduced or under-
went a major redesign.
TROUBLE SPOTS
T o assess a used car in
more detaii, look at the
individuai R atings for
each of the 17 trouble spots.
T hey wiii pinpoint a model's
strengths and weaknesses.
R atings are based on the
percentage of survey
respondents who reported
problems for that trouble
spot, compared with the
average of all vehicles for
that year.
M odels that score a
are not necessarily unreli-
able, but they have a higher
problem rate than the

average model. S imiiarly,
modeis that score a are
not necessarily problem-
free, but they had relatively
few problems compared
with other models.
B ecause problem rates in
some trouble spots are very
iow, we do not assign a or
a unless the model's prob-
lem rate exceeds 3 percent.
I f a problem rate is beiow
2 percent, it will be assigned
a 6; beiow 1 percent, it will
be assigned a .
USED CAR VERDICTS
T o check the overall reli-
abiiity of a used car, look at
the U sed C ar Verdict. T his
R ating shows whether the
modei had more or fewer
problems overail than the
average model of that year.

AUT O R E L I A B I L I T Y 189
The verdict is calculated from
the total number of problems
reported by subscribers in all
trouble spots. Our calculations
give extra Veight to problems
with major engine and trans-
mission systems, the cooling
system, and the driye system
because they cah be serious
ahd expensive to repair.
NEW CAR PREDICTIONS
To determine the New Car
Predictioh, we averaged a
model's Used Car Verdict for
the most recent three years,
provided the vehicle did not
change significantly in that
time ahd wash't redesigned for
2011 or 2012. We have found
that several model years' data
are a better predictor than the
single most recent model year.
One or two years' data may
be used if the model was rede-
signed in 2011 or 2010, or if
there were insufficient data for
more years. Sometimes we in-
clude a prediction for a model
that is new or has been rede-
signed, provided its reliability
history or the manufacturer's
track record has been consis-
tently above average. "NA"
means there were insufficient
data for a prediction.

Quick
Guide
TIRES
Tires have a direct impact on your car's handling, braking,
ride, comfort qualities, and fuei economy. More important,
the cornering grip, braking distances, and resistance to
hydroplaning affect your safety on the road.
Shopping tip
Remember that if you
buy your tires online,
you may have to pay
for shipping, and also
pay for mounting and
balancing when the
mail-order tires arrive.

Types and features
All-seasonThese are the
tires that come standard
on many cars, minivans,
and SUVs.
Best for: Year-round
traction, long tread life,
and a comfortable ride.
But they typically lack the
precise handling and grip
of performance tires.
Speed ratings: None, S
(112 mph), T (118 mph).
Tread-wear warranty:
None or 40,000 to 100,000
miles.
Performance all-season
These come standard on
newer cars.
Best for: Improved han-
dling and grip over all-
season tires on wet and
dry pavement. But they
often have shorter tread
wear than many all-season
tires.
Speed ratings: H (130
mph), V (149 mph).
Tread-wear warranty:
None or 40,000 to 70,000
miles.
Ultra-high performance
all-seasonFound on
sports cars, sports sedans,
and some lower-priced
sporty models.
Best for: Wet and dry
braking and handling. But
they trade ultimate warm-
weather grip for passable
winter performance.
Speed ratings: Z (more
than 149 mph), W (168 mph),
Y (186 mph).
Tread-wear warranty:
None or 30,000 to 40,000
miles.
Ultra-high performance
summerFound mostly
on high-performance sports
cars and sports sedans,
t Best for: Wet and dry
braking and handling. But
they are not suited for use
in winter conditions.
Speed ratings: Z (more
than 149 mph), W (168
mph), Y (186 mph).
Tread-wear warranty:
Typically none.
WinterSpecially made
for use in freezing tem-
peratures and on snow
and ice.
Best for: Maintaining
traction on snow and ice.
But fast wear and so-so
wet and dry braking make
them suitable only for cold-
weather use.
Speed ratings: Q (99 mph
and higher).
Tread-wear warranty:
None.
SUV/PickupDesigned
for the rigors of truck use.
Best for: All-terrain
models are designed for
on-road and light-duty off-
pavement use; all-season
models are made primarily
for on-road use. But some
automakers recommend
staying with whatever
type of tire came with your
vehicle.
Speed ratings: S (112 mph
and higher).
Tread-wear warranty:
None or 40,000 to 70,000
miles.
