LRT braces for Feast of Black Nazarene
THE LIGHT Rail Transit Authority (LRTA) assures the safety and security of the devotees on the annual Feast of the Black Nazarene on Jan. 9.
LRTA Officer-inCharge Emerson L. Benitez said ridership is expected to surge on this day due to expected heavy traffic. Devotees and regular commuters prefer to take the LRT system as an alternative to the regular mode of transport because it is faster, more convenient and affordable. LRTA has recorded 620,987 passengers on the LRT Line 1 system last Jan 9, 2012, during the Feast of the Black Nazarene, while it has achieved its all-time highest ridership in both lines in a single day with 658,627 passengers and 234,450 for line 1 and 2 respectively during the Iglesia ni Cristo bible exposition in Luneta last Feb. 28, 2012. Benitez said that there will be enough station and security personnel to attend to the devotees and regular passengers. Helpdesks, additional medical personnel and Red Cross volunteers will also be deployed at the UN Avenue, Central, Carriedo, D. Jose and Recto stations to cope with the expected surge in passenger volume. “LRTA will still accommodate barefooted passengers to board the train in deference to the customary celebration of the Feast of the Black Nazarene. However, the “No inspection, No entry” policy shall still be strictly implemented in all LRT stations” Benitez added. Tens of thousands of devotees are expected to take part in the traditional procession on Wednesday.

Grounded, but reaching up to the universe
By Armin Adina Photos by Rodel Rotoni
But that is exactly what 2012 Miss Universe first runner up Janine Tugonon does when she isn’t preoccupied with preparations for yet another beauty pageant and her other duties under the Binibining Pilipinas Charities Inc. The 23-year-old licensed pharmacist and her boyfriend Jaypee Santos peddle seafood in their respective subdivisions, a thriving business that Tugonon is proud to be part of. “I’m very down-to-earth,” she said. Iyong iba buhay pa,” the beauty queen from Orion, Bataan said, just before she flew to Las Vegas for the 2012 Miss Universe pageant where she competed against 88 other international beauties. “Pagbalik ko [galing ng Miss Universe] itutuloy naming dalawa, kasi okay siyang negosyo eh,” she added. Already, the couple have sealed deals with several stall owners in wet markets for their fish supply. She has connections in Quezon province, Tugonon said, where Santos’ father hails

from, and has made arrangements to source their merchandise from there to fill the need of their expanding market. Tugonon and Santos, a software engineer in the company where she used to work, have been dating for eight months now. As if to break once more the predictable mold of glamorous beauty queens, Tugonon confessed to another interest. “I want to study criminology,” she said. “Noong sobrang bata ako pinangarap kong maging doctor. Iyon ang plano ko talaga before I joined Binibining Pilipinas again.” In fact, she sees herself flashing a second degree in criminology before she hits her thirties. “I wanna study forensics or criminology. Pangarap ko pa rin iyon ngayon,” she said, eyes gleaming with determination. Criminology and beauty pageants may seem worlds apart, but Tugonon finds a logical link between the two. “Siguro iyong thrill—thrill ng

EVEN at the airport, Janine gamely shows off her catwalk skills to her adoring fans.
“Kasi kung ako lang, definitely I don’t want to join na. I wanna study pa ulit, or work abroad,” she recalled. “It was my mom who really pushed me. Sinabi niya ‘you join na kasi you’re going to win’.” She sighed. Syempre my mom, sasabihin mananalo talaga ako.” Tugonon said she had to pray hard and ask God whether she should rejoin the national beauty pageant. “And I think He answered ‘yes, go ahead and do what I called you to do.’” This strong faith in God is another trait that she shares with other titleholders, particularly Supsup. Both are vocal about it and are not afraid to declare their religious beliefs. Supsup’s response during the 2011 Miss Universe pageant centered on her faith, while Tugonon similarly invoked her beliefs during the 2012 Binibining Pilipinas pageant in April. During the national pageant’s question-and-answer round, Tugonon declared: “I believe that women have the right to choose… what they want. But for me, you’ll have to go for what God has called you to do, whatever it is… You must do what your purpose is in this world. Just have a child-like faith and mature obedience, and everything will go smooth(ly).”

JANINE is the real 2012 Miss Universe winner for Filipinos and many other followers around the world.
Analyzing events and finding correlations between seemingly unrelated fields is easy for Tugonon, who credits her training as a pharmacist at the University of Santo Tomas for her critical thinking. “Phramacy is a course na lahat ng aspects of intellect mo mahahasa—analysis, critical thinking—and hanggang ngayon nasa akin ang mga trait na iyon. Kahit anong ibato mo sa akin I can adapt to the circumstances,” she said. Lessons learned in college have come in handy now that she is a beauty queen, she said. “Sa Miss Universe [pageant] marami kang makikilala, maraming events and situations na marami kang makakasalamuhang tao. So versatility and flexibility really helps a lot. Kahit saan ka dalhin ng Miss Universe, kahit anong ipagawa nila sa iyo, kahit ano kayang kaya mo,” added this titleholder who, like her predecessors 2010 Miss Universe fourth runner-up Venus Raj and 2011 Miss Universe third runner-up Shamcey Supsup, earned latin honors in college, being a cum laude graduate. Raj was a cum laude Communication Arts graduate at the Bicol University while Supsup was a magna cum laude Architecture graduate at the University of the Philippines Diliman. Tugonon was also among the topnotchers in the licensure examination for pharmacists, just like Supsup who topped the architecture board exams. But like Supsup, Tugonon was reluctant to join beauty contests and only did so on her mother’s prodding. She had joined the Bb. Pilipinas Pageant in 2011 and ranked first runner-up to Supsup. To join the 2012 competition, she had to give up that runner-up title as her contract stipulates that her duties span a total of 18 months after the 2011 coronation night.

JANINE shows there are no hard and fast rules to becoming a beauty queen.

Nasa listahan ni Marian ang paghihiganti, paghuhubad
By Marinel R. Cruz

K

“I changed even the way I talk, walk and dress up,” sabi ni Marian hinggil sa pagganap niya bilang Angeline Santos, ang masunuring asawa ni Marcel Salcedo (Dennis Trillo). “When I turn into my alter-ego Chantal, I’ll become mataray. I’ll use a different approach, something more befitting of a woman who wants to exact revenge.” “They’re really very interesting. When I become Chantal, I’ll be more daring... [I’ll] bare more skin. I’ll be required to exert more effort portraying her.” “It really means a lot to me that people are pleased with what I’m doing in ‘Temptation of Wife.’”

Castro). “It’s difficult to portray a wife whose husband was snatched away from her. I’m just acting the part, but I already feel the pain that a wife goes through. I pray this will not happen to me in the future,” pagtatapat ni Marian. “I consider myself lucky. I know that Dong is loyal to me.”

“I fear it. If it happens, I know it’s

our destiny, and there’s a reason for it.”

“Dong’s mom is so kind and loving. She’s often quiet. She is also a very gracious host,” kuwento ni Marian. “We’re so different because I’m loud and talkative.”

‘Year of independence’
By Marinel R. Cruz Photos by Romy Homillada
Gee recently moved to her own condominium unit in Quezon City where she spent last Christmas. For the holidays, Gee decorated her new dwelling with many Christmas lights. “I want it to look very sweet and romantic,” she said. “I feel proud of myself.” Past Christmases, she said, were usually “an intimate, special” celebration at her parents’ home in Antipolo. “It’s actually the New Year’s celebration that’s more chaotic, because the whole Canlas clan is present,” Gee told Living Stars. “My dad would serve bulalo while my mom would make sure we have 12 different kinds of fruits.” Gee has hosted shows like Pilipinas Win na Win, Music Uplate Live and MU Live for ABSCBN, and has appeared on series like Lokomoko High (TV5) and I Laugh Sabado (QTV11).

V HOST-ACTRESS Gee Canlas has declared 2013 her “year of independence.”
Gee has also acted in indie films, most recently in Mark Shandii Bacolod’s “Ang Pakiramdam ng Puso Ko Kapag Iniiwan,” where she played the lead role. She was last seen as a contestant on the reality show “The Amazing Race Philippines” on TV5.

Modern Asian
Gee sought the help of her friend, interior designer Eloisa Gomez, to achieve the modern Asian look that she wanted for her new home. “The deep brown and earth tones make everything feel cozy,” observed Eloisa. “The design of the curtains also gives the room a neo-baroque look. It’s also practical because we used materials that are cost-effective.” “When I asked her what color she wanted, Gee chose red. She said it stands out. It’s bold and represents her character,”

Eloisa recalled. “To decorate the whole place with a very limited budget, we went to Divisoria and to Sta. Cruz in Manila to buy materials.” Eloisa made curtains from

Eloisa brought home-made ginger beer. “I have a lot of plans for this place. This is only the beginning,” said Gee. “First on my list is to install a quality sound system. We chose other furniture that would go well with what she already has,” Eloisa said. “The (beige) easy chair came from my own room. I bought it from a deal website. Its color may look plain but its character is in its texture.” Condo living for Gee has many advantages. “The amenities here are really good. I can go out of my unit and just chill out at the penthouse. I plan to maximize the gym. It’s so hightech. It’s like I’m enrolled in Fitness First,” she pointed out. “Security here is also tight. You have to ask permission to be let in and out of the lobby door.”

Nagka ingay sa so-

“There’s a lot of pressure but I think I can handle it,” ani Montalbo sa INQUIRER Linggo nang gabi. Oklahoma reclaims overall lead
TORONTO—Oklahoma City Thunder reclaimed the overall NBA lead with a 104-92 victory over the Toronto Raptors on Sunday, starting a challenging run of road games in winning style. Elsewhere, highflying Miami and Memphis posted wins while the Los Angeles Lakers’ woes deepened with another home defeat. Oklahoma City’s Ru s s e l l We s t b r o o k scored 23 points while Kevin Durant had 22 as the Thunder enjoyed a winning start to a stretch that sees them play 11 of 13 on the road. Los Angeles dropped their third straight— and the Lakers are already 11 games off the lead—with a 112-105 loss to the Denver Nuggets. The Memphis Grizzlies became the latest team to beat the struggling Phoenix Suns, winning 92-81. The Miami Heat scored the final 21 points of the game to pad the margin in a 99-71 win over the Washington Wizards. Also, Charlotte Bobcats won 108-101 after overtime at the Detroit Pistons. IW
