- The Four Brothers Wayward Prologue Outside, the rain drummed against the windows of the biology class

. Some learners, mesmerized by the constant trickle of water running against the cool window, instead of being mesmerized by the droning voice emitting from the large woman giving the class, were staring outside at the falling rain. Probably wishing they were at home and in bed, possibly sipping a cup of cocoa. Xzavier Elimina was hastily scribbling notes, hanging onto every word uttered by the dull, hostile lady standing in front. I was bored. The rain was slightly more exciting than gene-therapy done on plants. I spent my moments alternating between day-dreaming about my weekend ahead and wondering what Code found so fascinating about biology. I took the class only because it was either this class or geology, which is even more boring. Code is Xzavier. We nicknamed him “Code” because he's so damn smart. He's one of my best friends actually. I'm Hawk Vilion a.k.a “Twist”, so named because I can spin a tale like no one else can, also because I'm weird around magical stuff, I know there's nothing like real magic but if was there was, I'd be kneedeep in it. My other two best friends took Geology, they figured it's better to know where you are than what you are. There's Samuel Smite, also known as “Hound” because of his raggedy beard, I always tease him that he looks scruffy, he always teases that he's gonna hit me. He's quite aggressive, but I know that deep down he really likes us and won't hurt us, even though he's such a huge lump of a guy. Then there's Quinton Chrishan Johnson, the “Fang”. He bites. Kidding! He's probably the coolest one of us all. Always ready for a laugh and notorious for his inability to take anything seriously, if you're not his best friend that is. The four of us we're like a double dynamic duo. Inseparable, patient with each other, understanding of each other and like a group of best friends; impossible to understand if you weren't one of us. This day. This dull, rainy, idiotic day, which we were all looking forward to never seeing again, was the day that all of our lives were changed permanently and impossibly. This day we all died, we were all reborn and we started to fight for our new existences. Blame biology.

- Chapter One -

The bell rang. We jumped up, all excited, it might be raining but it was still break and thus, no class! Highlight of my life. Escape from the dreaded Praetorus, the biology-nut. Would that it had been true. I waited for Code outside as he was always the last to exit, having hovered to ask a few last minutequestions to our resident Gorgon. “Was that some class or what?” he yelped, charging from the class and straight into me. “Steady on, tiger. You're the nut job, remember? I just 'attend' to finish school and get on with my life.” As usual he rolled his eyes at me and started extrapolating on what he had learned today. It sounded like the class today had been kinda interesting, heard from him. The Gorgon's voice usually had me dozing off after a few minutes. We streaked off towards the usual spot where we hung out, finding Fang and Hound already waiting for us. Learners usually were quick to leave the Geology class, the teacher had the nasty habit of flicking you with a towel when walking past him. “Wassup, guys?” I asked, shaking both my buddies by the hand, doing my special shake with Fang which we took hours working out one day in Business Studies. “Nah man, not much over here with me, just chillin', you know.” I smiled at Fang, his habit of pretending to be an American black was funny and irritating to other people, I personally thought he did the American accent quite nicely but wouldn't dream of complimenting him on it. He got a big head way too easily. “That damn old man was pestering me about my homework again today”, complained Hound in his usual tone of deep disappointment, “doesn't he understand that it's difficult enough getting home every day, especially since the bastard won't give either of us a lift to town.” Me and Hound both stayed in the same town, me on a small farm about a kilometer out and him in one of the nicer neighborhoods in Wolseley. Fang and Code both stayed in Tulbagh, the town where our school was located. Hound and I had lifts into town in the mornings but had to hitchhike home every day after school come rain, hail, snow or sunshine. Mister Lubble, the Geology teacher and coincidentally, the Biology teachers boyfriend, also stayed in Wolseley and cheerily rode past us every day on his way home without ever bothering to offer us a lift. “Piece of shit,” I cheerfully agreed, “least he could do is help and not be such a prat. His damn girl is even worse of a bitch than he is.” Too late I saw the flash of warning cross Code's eyes as these words left my mouth. “Mr Vilion, Mr Smite, Mr Johnson and Mr Elimina, my office after school!” the furious voice of the gorgon blasted into my ear. Before I had time to object that I didn't have time for offices, tantrums, punishments or bitch fits she had turned away and stomped off towards the school building. Leaving me with my protests about my friends' innocence dying in my throat. “Shit,” I said, turning towards them, “I'm sorry, guys.” Code looked resigned, Fang and Hound just nodded, playing it cool. I swallowed. This was gonna be a bad one. I could feel it.

We filed into the biology lab after school, ready for our punishment and determined to give the gorgon shit for every second we had to spend inside that damn lab. I took the seat nearest her desk since it was actually my fault that we were there and coolly stared at her, waiting for her usual rant. Instead, she smiled sweetly at me. I looked at her, suspiciously. This wasn't like her at all. “Today,” she said, “we'll be doing a little experiment. My old teacher and mentor, Professor Aleix Braown sent me this little test tube of experimental goo, this goo is supposed to cause plants to develop cognitive skills. Smart plants, Mister Vilion, since you look so confused.” I was confused. I didn't know that she wanted us to listen to her latest hobby, but as a punishment, it was going to be effective, since her mere presence caused me pain. “What's this got to do with us?” Hound suddenly boomed from the back of the class, he needed a cigarette and was seriously pissed off that his smoking-time was being cut. “This, Mister Smite, will be your punishment for today. As I understand it, I was warned not to apply this to human skin since it infected them and caused hormonal imbalance, loss of sensitivity, uncontrollable hunger and aggressiveness. These affects are permanent since the effects lodge inside your brain via your bloodstream. For these reasons, you'll be wearing gloves since I'm supposed to protect your lives, even if I don't really care for them.” I rolled my eyes and decided that this class was going to be fun. I could already feel the plan forming in my head to splatter her with some of it.
