I wish to be considered for the AP-Google Scholarship. I have an intense passion for digital journalism and social media. This semester I became the full-time metro news reporter for the Marquette Tribune, covering topics that impact the Milwaukee and Marquette communities – including community events, government policies and community revitalization projects. I also worked as the multimedia reporting intern for The Milwaukee Neighborhood News Service, a news organization based out of Marquette University focusing on 15 Milwaukee neighborhoods. Working for the news service was an enriching experience because I had the ability to cover positive news about central city neighborhoods. Too often, news coverage of these neighborhoods focuses on crime and violence, so it was nice offering a different perspective. Even though my internship ended at the end of the fall 2012 semester, I will continue reporting for them as a volunteer. Outside of reporting, I work as the social media manager for the Diedrich College's Journalism and Media Studies Department. I maintain its Facebook page and group, Twitter, Pinterest and Tumblr accounts. I use these outlets to give students information on journalism opportunities, tips to make them more marketable to employers and to interact with the department’s students. I also work as the social media manager for InHue Magazine, an online publication created by my mentor Marissa Evans. The publication will launch in January 2013 and I will be in charge of maintaining the magazine’s online presence. My work with multimedia and social media is important to the evolution of journalism because it gives writers new outlets for sharing and curating news. The development of social media sites – like Twitter and Facebook – have made it easier to share my work and brand myself to the world. Thank you for considering me for this scholarship. I will contact you within the next week to confirm receipt of this application. Sincerely,
