THE AMERICAN FOUNDATION FOR EQUAL RIGHTS

MISSION STATEMENT
The American Foundation for Equal Rights is dedicated to protecting and advancing equal rights for every American.

WHAT HAS IT DONE TO HELP?
AFER has and is doing a lot so that same-sex couples will have the freedom to marry in every state. One of their major accomplishments, was fighting against Prop 8. Prop 8 passed in 2008 in California, and made it so same-sex couples cannot get married.

WHAT AFER HAS DONE
AFER brought together Ted Olsen (conservative) and David Boies (liberal) to help fight against Prop 8. Ted and David then sued California on the behalf of two same-sex couples for violating the due process and equal protection clauses of the 14th Amendment.

PROP 8
What is due process? This is the legal requirement that the state you reside in must respect all legal rights that are owed to a person. Everyone has the right to life, liberty, and property. What does this mean? Laws must apply equally to everyone, not just heterosexuals.

The result? Prop 8 was ruled unconstitutional.

WHAT CAN YOU DO TO HELP OUT?
What can you do to help? Share this presentation, let others know about AFER, donate, share your personal story, or volunteer. Kenneth Mehlman, who started a Project Right side to get more conservative support for same-sex marriage is on the board, along with Dustin Lance Black, an award winning screenwriter, and Chad Griffin, president of the Human Rights Campaign. They, along with many others are all working hard for everyone to have equality, so do all you can to help! Check out their website: After.org
