knowledge that spending more than you earn is not the path to financial strength and freedom. Who would have thought that a looming disaster might have a constructive consequence for future generations? In the go-go years of the 1980s and 1990s, borrow-and-spend was the mantra of the day. Financial education in the schools wasn’t even close to the radar screen, since all we needed to do was produce our credit card to buy anything we “wanted.” But now the financial press is abuzz with the concept of managing financial resources with care, thinking about the future consequences of today’s spending, saving for upcoming needs and mitigating today’s wants in lieu of future prosperity. enough chores. When he was about 8, one of the cows dried up. As we were a large family, we needed the milk, so my dad agreed to break a neighbor’s cow to milk. We got the milk, they got a gentle milk cow. She was a small black cow, didn’t give as much milk as the other, and was really easy to milk. My dad used kick hobbles to train her, and spent time teaching her to move her foot back so he could reach the udder, and gentling her. Since she was small, easy to milk and became very gentle, he decided my brother could start milking. You always milk from the same side. All the people I knew milked from the right. Other people have said they milked on the left. But we all agree you don’t change sides. You sit on a milking stool. Ours was a 10 inch piece of 4x4 with a board nailed across the top. You lean your head into the cows flank, which helps you balance. You

hold the bucket between your knees and after a bit, you set it on the floor. By having your head in the flank you can feel the cow tense if she is about to kick and you move the bucket out of the way, usually. My brother had a smaller bucket, since the cow gave less milk, that was about half the size or maybe a bit smaller than the 2 gallon one I used. He cleaned the udder, sat down and began to milk. The cow moved her right rear foot ahead just enough that he couldn’t reach her teats. He asked her to move her foot. She didn’t. He nudged her foot with his, as she had been trained, but she wouldn’t move her foot. He picked up his partially filled bucket, his stool, moved to the other side and sat down. He adjusted the stool to just the right place, placed the bucket between his knees and reached to begin milking again. She kicked him hard enough the sound made me look up. He was sailing across the barn toward the wall about eight feet away. He must have been worried about spilling the milk because he was holding the bail of the pail with both hands. When he hit, his arms bent upward and back, and placed the half bucket of milk on his head like a soldier’s helmet, the bail resting just underneath his nose. The milk poured down his face, then tapered off. Of course I immediately started to ask if he was all right, but the giggles overcame me. He was alright and I think he has forgiven me for laughing.
