ABSTRACT The growing population has resulted in an increase in the count of vehicles.
In cities, road traffic developed as the foremost problem during peak hours. Nowadays timer controlled traffic lights has replaced the conventional traffic lights and thus the count of sixty seconds has been provided for every phase of lighting. For instance, the traffic lights are equipped with timers to work sequentially initiating with a road followed by its parallel or its opposite roads. Hence with these contemporary systems, there are few limitations. As a result the timer runs for sixty seconds even though there is hardly any vehicle in the road. The timer clears out signal in a direction where there are no vehicles to come up and hence the timer again runs for another sixty seconds in an empty road resulting in the loss of fuel and time for the individuals waiting in the parallel or opposite roads. This project approach overcomes loss of time and fuel, due to waiting. Thus the novelistic approach was to load the timer with seconds or minutes based on the vehicles count in that particular road. This would outdate the conservative approach of loading the timer with constant sixty seconds without any regard to the vehicle count. The count of the vehicle would be estimated with the aid of camera image employing the Image processing technique. The timer would be loaded with the time (in seconds) based on the vehicle count with the support of the processed image. Subsequently, traffic congestion is condensed.
