Exceptional marketing copy is a must have in your business.

You know, copy that invites relationships.
Builds trust. Motivates people to buy from you. And the fastest way to start cranking out highly effective marketing copy is to write how you speak. So I’m clear…writing how you speak isn’t a hall pass to run amuck with spelling and grammatical errors. But it is a license to throw APA style, (think high school English – boring!), out the proverbial window and let how you speak show up on paper. The truth is writing killer marketing copy has nothing to do with where you put your apostrophes. It has EVERYTHING to do with letting people get to know you, like you AND trust you through your words. Before they do business with you. Many business owners are paralyzed at the thought of creating content, (i.e. articles, blog posts, social media musings), that reflects their authentic personality. The reasons are too many to list, but one that consistently tops the charts is… “It’s not professional.” *Hmmm.* (NOTE! While your copy may not prove thesis worthy, your goal as a marketer is to get people to at least READ what you write.) Last week I chatted with a business owner who said to me, “Brook, I’ve been following you for a long time. I get your e-zine every week. I’ve seen you speak. It’s clear to me you know your smoke.” (Her words, not mine.) And we laughed because who I am on the phone is exactly who I am on my blog. In my ezine. In a live workshop. At a speaking event. Everywhere.

And when you’re authentic in everything you create, cool things happen. You start to build authentic connections. You cultivate meaningful relationships with your ideal clients. You differentiate yourself in the marketplace which makes it much easier for potential clients to find you. It can be a challenge to find your voice. (Hey, it took me 11 years and it’s still evolving!) And if you haven’t found yours yet, please keep looking. A good place to start is to write a paragraph or two in first person. (Use I, you, etc.) Write out exactly how you would say it out loud. Give yourself permission to write a crappy first draft and then write it again. Just see where it takes you. And as far as “it’s not professional,” Dr. Seuss got it right when he shared,

“Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind.”
Writing strong marketing copy is one of the many things I teach my clients. Why? First, when they start to get the hang of it, it empowers them to create success in their business over and over.
