Lubricating oil for turbochargers

INTRODUCTION Due to very good experience and for an additional safety margin for the operator we strongly recommend to use a synthetic lubricating oil as listed below. For high performance turbochargers (i.e. VTR..4P, VTR..4D, VTR..4E) a special synthetic oil as listed below must be used. The same applies for highly loaded standard VTR..4 if the turbocharger speed nBmax exceeds the values specified in the table below and/or the compression ratio exceeds C>4. If the operator fails to comply with this recommendation this may have negative consequences to the operation of the turbocharger. The currently approved oils are listed below, an updated list is available from the nearest ABB service station. SYNTHETIC OILS max. change interval 5000h: Caltex Tegra Compressor Oil 68, Castrol Aircol CT 68, Castrol Aircol SN 68, Chevron Synthetic Compressor Oil Tegra 68, Elf Barelf CH 68, Exxon/Esso Synesstic 68, Kuwait Schumann 68, Nyco Nycolube 3060, Total Cortusa HP 100. max. change interval 5000h: Agip Dicrea SX 68, BP Enersyn TC-S 68, Castrol Aircol SR 68, Elf Barelf SM 68, Exxon/Esso Compressor Oil RS 68, Mobil Rarus SHC 1026, Mobil RL2011C (new SHC 626), Shell Corena AS 68 (ex Madrela AS 68), Texaco Cetus PAO 68. max. change interval 3000h: Shell Corena AP 68 (ex Madrela AP 68). OIL CHANGE INTERVAL The actual oil change intervals for turbochargers are usually given in the manual of the installed engine. Depending on the level of the operating temperatures the oil change interval may be adapted. Under no circumstances should the above indicated max. intervals be exceeded. A synthetic oil may darken within a few hundred operating hours without loosing its good lubricating ability. The discoloration is ranging from red, dark purple, dark brown to nearly black. In case of a quick darkening to black within 12 hours, this could be a sign of a mechanical defect, the cause should be investigated immediately. Turbocharger speed nBmax at 100% engine load MCR:
