MSA Suprema Control System for Monitoring Ammonia and Combustible Gas in a Vitamin Processing Facility

Application:
A leading supplier of vitamins and carotenoids to the feed, food, pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries needed a reliable multipoint monitoring system for detection of ammonia and combustible gas in their production plant. Forty-four gas detection points were necessary (39 for ammonia and 5 for combustible gas) as well as a system controller and operator interface.

Solution:
The monitoring system employs MSAs standard smart sensor the Ultima X which oers commonality in sensor design between the ammonia and combustible sensors and interfaces with the control system via a standard 4 20 mA output. Forty-four ammonia and five LEL Ultima XIR sensors were used to provide leak detection in the process/production areas of the plant. The customer chose the MSA Ultima XE (UL Div 2 configuration) for ammonia and the Ultima XIR for the LEL combustible gas detection. The system control panel and operator interface is the MSA Suprema multipoint control panel. The unit is rack-mounted in a freestanding enclosure and is located in the companys computer control room. Wiring was connected to prefabricated user terminals and includes full-field marshalling capabilities through fused terminals. The Suprema Control System interfaces to a remote touch screen display panel for operations and operator interface. The touch screen panel oers graphical representations of the plant layout and sensor locations, and provides a comprehensive display of critical sensor information such as alarm and functional status and operator alerts. The Suprema Controller also includes a 2,000item event and alarm log/historical archive.
