Book: College Algebra 4th Edition by Beecher and all. (Please note that you will want the Course Compass MyMathLab Supplement that comes packaged with the textbook. You may wish to only purchase the Course Compass MyMathLab Supplement which includes an e-book or electronic version of the textbook. The UVM Bookstore offers both options, or you can purchase the Access Code directly from the publisher, Pearson. IF YOU HAVE ALREADY TAKEN MATH 009 PREVIOUSLY AND YOU USED COURSE COMPASS MYMATHLAB, THEN YOU DO NOT NEED TO PURCHASE ANYTHING NEW.)
Note: A majority of the work done for this course will be done via the UVM BlackBoard Computer System as well as the Course Compass MyMathLab System. Both of these systems are very intuitive to use, but I will have step-by-step instructions posted along the way to ensure that students are do not feel overwhelmed by the technology. Furthermore, I understand that technology can be finicky at times, so I plan to be very understanding if an issue arises causing an unforeseen problem. The purpose of the class is for each student to increase his or her level of knowledge, and again, I want to ensure that this is done as stress free as possible.

Course Description: College Algebra will cover basic algebraic properties including exponents, polynomials, rational expressions, and equation solving. From here, we will extensively study functions and their graphs. A focus is put on understanding the many properties of particular families of functions including linear, quadratic and other polynomials, rational, exponential, and logarithmic. The course may end with scattered topics on solving systems of linear equations. The understanding will be discovered and shown via mathematical modeling of real world situations. An emphasis will be made to understand these new concepts graphically, numerically, verbally, and algebraically. The course work will involve some fairly intense computations and mathematical modeling, and it is required that students purchase or obtain an appropriate calculator. A TI-83/84 Graphing calculator is highly recommended.
Course Goals: The motivating goal behind this course is to introduce the basic idea behind college algebra. The successful completion of the course: a student will have stronger quantitative reasoning skills, a student will have enhanced his or her problem solving techniques, and a student will have solid understanding of algebra. A typical follow-up course for Math 009 would be Math 019.
Method of Instruction: Due to the class being fully on-line, much of the instruction duties fall on the student. However, I will go out of my way to ensure that you are keeping up with the materials. I will do the following: Post Detailed Section Notes, including worked out problems. Post Brief Audio/Video Podcasts, highlighting some trickier problems. Send Daily/Weekly Messages, reminding students of pending due-dates and dead-lines. Be Available to meet with students for questions, either in-person at my office on UVM’s Campus or in a video-chat via the Free Utility Google+ Hangouts. Respond to any emails or questions within 24 hours. In general, help you become a better mathematics student. Note: On-Line classes are quite different than face-to-face classes; however, many students find the method of instruction much more liberating, as it allows them to move at their own pace. I will have all materials available at the start of class to facilitate those students who prefer to work at a quicker pace. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions. You can choose to work at the pace stated in the schedule shown below, but if you would like to proceed at a quicker or slower pace, please feel free to do so. However, please don’t forgo an understanding of the material by moving at too quick of a pace. Lastly, if you feel that you are becoming overwhelmed by the material, please do not hesitate to send me an email, and I can work with you. Again, a majority of the effort in the class is put on the student, so please don’t feel uncomfortable asking for help.
Grading: The grading system is as follows: MyMathLab HOMEWORK (25%)---Following each section or sections covered, students must log on to the CourseCompass MyMathLab System and complete a companion HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT that follows the material posted on-line. You will be given several attempts to answer each question, and you can utilize the book and all of the aids offered within the CourseComass system to help solve the problems. Each assignment should take roughly 30 minutes to complete, and you will have several days to complete the assignments. All assignment grades will be equally weighted. At the end of the semester, I will drop the lowest 3 HOMEWORK grades and average the remaining grades. This average will count towards 25% of your final grade. MyMathLab QUIZZES (25%)---Following each section or sections covered, students must log on to the CourseCompass MyMathLab System and complete a companion QUIZ that follows the material posted on-line and the homework assignments. You will be given TWO attempts to answer each question, and the student aids will not be available during the quiz. There will be maximum time limit on the quizzes, so once you open the quiz, you must complete it. All quiz grades will be equally weighted. At the end of the semester, I will drop the lowest 3 QUIZ grades and average the remaining grades. This average will count towards 25% of your final grade. MyMathLab TESTS (50%)---There will be two TESTS during the course. The breakdown of what material appears on which test is shown below. TEST 1 will be taken once you have completed the following sections: R.1 – R.7, 1.1 – 1.6, 2.1 – 2.5. TEST 2 will be taken once you have completed the following sections: 3.1 – 3.4, 4.1 – 4.3, 4.5, 5.1 – 5.5. Following the completion of the stated sections, students must log on to the CourseCompass MyMathLab System and complete a companion TEST that follows the material posted on-line, the homework assignments and the quizzes. You will be given TWO attempts to answer each question, and the student aids will not be available during the test. There will be maximum time limit on the test, so once you open the test, you must complete it. Each test will count towards 25% of your final grade.
Note: Based on the above given grading formula, you will end the class with a percentage grade. Depending on the value of this percentage grade, I will use the following table to issue your Class Grade. All ASSIGNMENT, QUIZ and TEST grades will be posted on the CourseCompass MyMathLab System.

Late Work: The schedule included below lists recommended dates to complete each ASSIGNMENT, QUIZ and TEST, and this will set a general pace for the course. However, as I stated previously, please do not hesitate to move at a quicker or slower pace if you feel so inclined. Again, I will have all course materials open and ready to use at the start of the semester, and these materials will remain open for the entire semester. Some examples of how students have progressed in the past: Follow the stated schedule. Completed a majority of work on weekday evenings, keeping weekends free. Completed a majority of work on weekends, keeping weekdays free.
