Musically. His approach to bhakti-siddhänta. Çréla Gurudeva is well-known for presenting the very elevated and confidential aspects of the Gauòéya Vaiñëava philosophy. Will you tell us what is the meaning of ‘leadership?’ Çréla Gurudeva: You can learn by my example – by my life and behavior. Italy: June 12.Beautiful Leadership Çrépäda Nemi Mahäräja: Çréla Gurudeva. because he was not only the most senior and expert amongst the sages. and asked about his well-being. in the course of their meeting. Lord Brahmä was very happy to see his son. the great sage Bhågu left for Brahma-loka. However. they resolved to discover which of the three divinities – Brahmä. but also the son of Lord Brahmä. and when Bhågu saw his father’s 3 . Upon hearing their request. and Viñëu – is the chief and Supreme over all. Çré Bhågu Muni entered the court of Lord Brahmä and stood in front of him. so the sages turned to the sage Bhågu Muni for help in resolving the issue. the abode of Lord Brahmä. and yet others maintained that Viñëu is the Lord of all Lords. The sages agreed that they would unanimously accept Bhågu Muni’s decision when he had personally tested each of the divinities. Some said that Brahmä is the Supreme. He did not offer respects or endearing words. was confusing. and they discussed only transcendental topics. so he acted haughtily instead of paying attention to Lord Brahmä’s words. the sage had come to test his father.God: The Most Respectful Leader [Çréla Gurudeva tells this history. Chapter Nine] We read that in ancient times. All of the three major divinities were proposed as the Supreme by the various Puräëas. Antya-khaëòa. Çiva. being born from his mind. Lord Brahmä became livid with rage when he saw his son’s misdemeanor and uncouth behavior. many great sages assembled on the bank of the sacred Sarasvaté River to perform the Vedic sacrifice of hearing the Puräëas are the sages were very learned and well versed in the scriptures. as told here in Çré Caitanya-bhägavata. others said Maheçvara (Çiva). Bhågu was the right person to make the investigation. This of course. as a son should to his father.

Çré Pärvaté-devé stepped in between them and caught hold of her husband’s hand. so how can you be so angry with him?” The words of Lord Brahmä’s courtiers acted like water upon a fire and. “After all. and next proceeded to Mount Kailäsa to test Lord Çiva. do not touch me! You always dress like an uncivilized barbarian. the sage proceeded to Vaikuëöha to test Çré Viñëu. 1 Brahmä and Çiva actually have no false ego. Bhågu Muni was speaking these words only to test Çré Maheçvara. The Supreme Personality of Godhead was reclining upon His gem-studded bed. otherwise. saying. you are his father and he is your son. overcome with paternal affection. Bhågu said. Which scripture recommends one to smear ashes all over the body? Stay away from me. so he approached the sage respectfully and wanted to embrace him. Lord Çiva became so enraged that he forgot that Bhågu Muni was his elder brother. When Lord Çiva saw Bhågu Muni. he rushed towards the sage.Harmony burning eyes. which could quickly reduce him to ashes. to greet him. Some of Lord Brahmä’s associates began to pacify him saying. They were simply assisting in the Lord’s pastime of instruction. Bhågu then returned to Lord Brahmä to explain everything. 4 .

Bhågu Muni appeared as if from nowhere and kicked the Lord upon His chest. the Lord anointed the sage’s body with sandalwood paste. With His own hands. Çré Lakñmé-devé. massaged His lotus feet. “Kindly forgive Me for My transgression of etiquette. Feeling very ashamed. Çré Lakñmé-devé. one who is marked with the sign of çrévatsa. it has purified all the kings and emperors of the innumerable universes that are situated in My personal form. greed. Çré Lakñmé-devé. 5 . he had acted under some compulsion. horripilate. perspire. in the same place where My beloved wife. he remained for a long time with his head hung down. acting as if He were an offender who was trying to exonerate Himself from His offenses. he began to dance. for i was not at all aware of your auspicious arrival. Hare Räma Hare Räma Räma Räma Hare Hare.Rags There is not just one world – there are millions upon millions of worlds – and within all these worlds the eternal spirit soul wanders through the various species of life. he receives the association of pure devotees. “Rädhe Çyäma!” “Rädhe. Here is an example of how one becomes fortunate. “Hare Kåñëa Hare Kåñëa Kåñëa Kåñëa Hare Hare. he called out again and again. or His land (Våndävana-dhäma. begging for chapatis. What is that fortune? One becomes fortunate if he has performed any activities related to Kåñëa and His associates. Sometimes he takes the form of a human. or related to anyone or anything connected with Kåñëa. “Don’t come to my door in the future. such as Tulasi-devé. and as he was begging he constantly called out. if he is fortunate. and just as before. sometimes a tree. otherwise i will break this stick on your back! Always remember this! Don’t come to my door!” However. She did not want to hear “Rädhe Rädhe” or “Hare Kåñëa. Hare Räma Hare Räma Räma Räma Hare Hare. Always maintain the conception that we are all in Çré Caitanya Mahäprabhu's family. and others in our line – especially Çréla Bhaktivinoda Öhäkura and Çréla Bhaktisiddhänta Sarasvaté Öhäkura. i encourage the school here to expand. because they will also be members of the society. What is the meaning of preaching? its purpose is only to develop a very good society everywhere. Çréla Sanätana Gosvämé. so that everyone can be happy forever. so try to realize these truths. Çréla Raghunätha däsa Gosvämé.An Ideal Society Try to develop your Kåñëa-consciousness by following the process of Çréla Rüpa Gosvämé. After so many years you are coming to the stage of madhyama-adhikäré. and be happy. 8 . but of your children. Do not think only of yourself. We want a society in which we can chant. then all problems will disappear and the children will be welltrained and happy. You will require a committee that can meet and try to solve any problems that arise. We cannot live without society. We want to start by developing such a society here. Train them in the principles and teachings of Kåñëa-consciousness. if this society is Kåñëa-conscious. remember Kåñëa. it will help everyone. and if you all honor each other. and thus try to honor all devotees without consideration of caste or creed. and not blindly. it is ideal to respect devotees according to their quality of bhakti.

However. There should be harmony. some persons wanted to control others by intelligence and not by love and affection. Those who are senior disciples of Çréla Prabhupäda Bhaktivedänta Svämé Mahäräja should be honored. California: 1999 9 . and they should have great affection for their juniors. Thus you can advance. sometimes another.” There is no need to be angry and upset about disturbing occurrences. try to reconcile the situation by thinking. if any problems come. it is so beneficial for you to associate with Vaiñëavas who are really madhyama-adhikäré. Çré Caitanya Mahäprabhu had that universal love. weekly. whether junior or senior.Perfecting Society Everyone. this is most essential. and everyone will benefit. and you can enter into the Çréla Rüpa Gosvämé’s Upadeçämåta and Çréla Raghunätha däsa Gosvämé’s Manaù-çikñä. whose character is very elevated and spotless. and consequently. “This is due to my past karma. should be honored according to his/her position in bhakti. The process for achieving success has nothing to do with controlling. This is the way to make a very ideal society.” or. it has to do with universal love and affection. Meetings and classes may be held fortnightly. i request that a school be established specifically to teach spiritual association on the basis of developing love and affection for each other. “Kåñëa wants to test me and operate on me. and he tried to establish it. they could not succeed. or on the occasion of any festival. Sometimes one devotee can give class. you can create a very beautiful and strong community. You will be successful through harmony.

Çréla Vämana Mahäräja. nothing else. Thinking how to please guru later transfers into thinking how to please Kåñëa. not engaged in politics. Cebu. Çréla Trivikrama Mahäräja and others were always like this. Çréla Rüpa Gosvämé. who never engaged in politics. and we did not hear kaöha about anyone but Kåñëa and His pure devotees. Çréla Gurudeva: At that time we may remember Kåñëa and Yaçodä in the pastime of Mother Yaçodä tying Kåñëa to the grinding mortar (dämodara-bandana-lélä). There cannot be any mood of revenge. But she is not committing any aparädha.Loving Management Çrépäda Tamäl Kåñëa Maharaja (iSKCON GBC member): We see that we must be so careful not to commit näma-aparädha. or anything of the sort. sevä-aparädha. but still it is criticism. and at the same time be able to perform sevä to the Vaiñëava or the institution when we have to analyze or even perhaps criticize? it may be criticism in a helpful way. She does not slap Him. if someone is acting against bhakti. "May i beat You?" and she ‘rebukes’ Him so much. but this must be done with love (préti). and even perhaps helping that person. So. if we are not pure and we criticize repeatedly. However. Her heart is devoid of any unfavorable mood (pratiküla-bhäva). or hatred. We may use some rough words for the purpose of management. and we must analyze another person's behavior for the purpose of protecting our institution. A madhyama-adhikäré has the ride to act in this way. but with préti. we must distinguish right from wrong. and she strongly chastises Him. we will give him appropriate çikñä. We can give someone a slap and rebuke him. so that his nature will change. and it can only be done with préti if our inner heart is such. and vaiñëava-aparädha. as managers of an institution. This means she desires only His happiness. because her heart and mood is favorable (anükula-bhäva). how do we keep free from vaiñëava-aparädha. our heart becomes like a stone and our fear of committing vaiñëava-aparädha 11 . But sometimes. We should be very careful. but she shows her stick as if she will do so. Yaçodä says to Kåñëa.

it is essential that we try to please those Vaiñëavas according to their position in bhakti. So. we should be very careful. Mathurä. India: November 11. 1991 12 . if we do anything wrong to anyone.Harmony goes away. or with any Vaiñëavas. by heart also. with Kåñëa also.

as teachers. The teachers should also be very humble. i want this school to advance still further so that devotees will be inspired to send students from every part of the world. they will never be able to teach these principles to their students. Humility Springs from Bhakti Now we will come to the subject of our class on Bhajana Rahasya. and in this regard Çréla Bhaktivinoda Öhäkura has quoted the third çloka of Çré Çikñästakam: 16 . and i want more students to come. if they are not humble and polite. Students learn from their teachers’ behavior. Some of the teachers may sometimes become upset. but it is important for them to understand that. they must practice in order to teach. the stage of steadiness in bhakti. We are explaining niñöhä. i know personally that Vrajendra-nanda prabhu and Nityä-maïjaré däsé are very humble and polite. i became very satisfied this morning when i visited the school and saw the students and teachers. The students should learn Vaiñëava etiquette.Humility i offer millions of humble obeisances unto the lotus feet of my paramaradhyadeva (most worshipful master). and i desire the other teachers to be like them. and the same unlimited obeisances unto the lotus feet of my çikñä-guru. oà viñëupäda Çré Çrémad Bhaktivedänta Svämé Mahäräja. and they should also learn our siddhänta from the beginning. i want this school to advance further. and do not honor their superiors. because they are young. oà viñëupäda Çré Çrémad Bhakti Prajïäna Keçava Gosvämé Mahäräja. They should learn to be very polite and humble and to honor all Vaiñëavas.

and properly respecting all Vaiñëavas. it is essential to increase your sädhana-bhajana: chanting “Hare Kåñëa”. humility will come naturally. From today onward, let us give proper respect to Vaiñëavas according to their level of bhakti as neophytes, intermediate devotees, and advanced devotees (kaniñöha, madhyama, or uttama-adhikäré). We consider those who chant kåñëa-näma to be our family members, whether they are initiated or not. i know that you cannot realize who is exalted (uttama) and who is on another level. Still, try to give proper respect. One who does not do so is not even a kaniñöha-adhikäré.

Love and Affection
Kåñëa is love, and love is Kåñëa. The aim and object of the teaching of Çré Caitanya Mahäprabhu and Çréla Rüpa Gosvämé is simply to know this. Rädhä and Kåñëa have combined to become Çacénandana Gaurahari (Çré Caitanya Mahäprabhu), who is more merciful than either of Them. Çré Caitanya Mahäprabhu traveled throughout india, from north to south, from east to west, preaching love and affection everywhere He went. This was also the mission of Çré Çrémad Bhaktivedänta Svämi Mahäräja and our entire guru-paramparä. We want to associate with everyone on the platform of love and affection, not by controlling others. You cannot bring others to Kåñëa's service by manipulating them or controlling them. You cannot even control your own mind, what to speak of controlling others’.

Dedication to Others’ Welfare
Mahäprabhu exhibited His love and affection in the jungles of Jharikhaëòa by causing the wild animals to chant the Hare Kåñëa mahä-mantra together in ecstatic love. By His influence, the behavior of these wild animals towards each other changed; they lived together peacefully and even drank from the same watering places. it was by His mercy that He quickly spread love and affection throughout this planet and the universe. The love that He preached is Çrématé Rädhikä’s special prema. if you want to make your life successful, happy, and peaceful, then try to give all of your love and affection to Kåñëa and, with Kåñëa in the center, give your love and affection to all living beings. Don’t try to control others by your order or your thoughts. Try to give your whole being. Love has nothing to take but everything to give.


if your aim is to preach Çré Caitanya Mahäprabhu’s love and affection, then dedicate your whole life for others’ welfare. They will reciprocate with that love, and thus give their life to serve Kåñëa. However, if you try to control them, they will not offer their love and affection. Avoid criticizing others; criticize your own mind and bad habits instead. The first point is that if we want to show love to others, it is essential not to cause them any pain or suffering, or to burden them for our personal happiness or maintenance. Our first concern is for the happiness and satisfaction of others. We want to be completely selfless in our dealings, and for this, we have the example of the tree, which gives its bark, roots, fruits, leaves, wood, and shade. The tree offers everything to others with no expectation of remuneration. Why can’t we human beings be so selfless? Çré Caitanya Mahäprabhu has given us this verse:
A devotee thinks himself to be even lower and more worthless than insignificant grass that has been trampled beneath everyone's feet. He is more tolerant than a tree, he has no pride, and he offers respect to all others according to their respective positions. Thus, he is able to chant the holy name of Çré Hari continuously. (Çré Çikñäñöakam verse 3)

i want my sannyäsés and preachers to understand this verse and follow it completely, and to teach others by their personal example. i want them to behave selflessly, trying to give their hearts to others. i have come to give my heart, not to take anything from you. This is the preaching of Çré Caitanya Mahäprabhu. He gave His heart even to dogs, lions, and tigers. We need not ask anyone for money. if we preach the message of Çré Caitanya Mahäprabhu selflessly, God will automatically send money


This is Çré Caitanya Mahäprabhu’s teaching and example. At the present moment. and then try to follow them. 2002 23 . i can preach everywhere. Go on with your preaching. Don’t think. and our guru-varga. Spread it broadly all around the world. and you should also realize this fact.” instead. Let him die. to save others. the Absolute Truth. but please don’t do so in this incarnation. when they saw that a scorpion was being carried away by the current. he tolerates it. They always use their life. Lord.

and now is describing the qualities of the kaniñöha-bhakta. a materialistic devotee. but is unable to properly respect Vaiñëavas and people in general.47) A devotee who faithfully engages in the worship of the Deity in the temple but does not behave properly toward other devotees or people in general is called a präkåta-bhakta. Such a person is a materialistic devotee. Çréla Gurudeva: Why has it been told that such a person is a bhakta (devotee)? Why has he been called a kaniñöha-bhakta? Sundara-gopäla däsa: Although he is only like the shadow of a bhakta. He has already discussed the qualities of the uttama-bhakta and madhyama-bhakta. dhanyäù sma müòha-gatayo 'pi hariëya etä yä nanda-nandanam upätta-vicitra-veçam äkarëya veëu-raëitaà saha-kåñëa-säräù püjäà dadhur viracitäà praëayävalokaiù Çrémad-Bhägavatam (10.21.11) Blessed are all these foolish deer because they have approached Mahäräja Nanda's son, who is gorgeously dressed and is playing on His flute. indeed, both the doe and the bucks worship the Lord with looks of love and affection.

Rädhikä used to say, “i want to be a deer, because they can easily get the darçana of Kåñëa, whereas i cannot.” Such is Her humility. Always be more humble than a blade of grass; persons with this quality will develop their Kåñëa-consciousness. On the other hand, if one is overwhelmed with false ego, thinking, “i know everything. Why should i honor all these bogus persons?” he will deviate. Try, therefore, to learn Vaiñëava etiquette, follow properly, and honor all according to their development in bhakti. Honor even those who are kaniñöha, and especially the madhyama, madhyama-uttama, and uttama-adhikäré.

çuçrüñayä bhajana-vijïam ananyam anyanindädi-çünya-hådam épsita-saìga-labdhyä Nectar of Instruction, (text 5) One should mentally honor the devotee who chants the holy name of Lord Kåñëa. One should offer humble obeisances to the devotee who has undergone spiritual initiation (dékñä) and is engaged in worshiping the Deity, and one should associate with and faithfully serve that pure devotee who is advanced in undeviated devotional service and whose heart is completely devoid of the propensity to criticize others.

Criticism Destroys Bhakti

We speak publicly on the Bhägavatam and give instructions to others.Criticize. we deceive ourselves and are deprived of the real fruit of chanting. many lifetimes are wasted. but we are not really hearing. but we do not protect ourselves from offense to Vaiñëavas. residing in the holy place and hearing Bhägavatam. be very. Therefore. in this way. çré-mürtira çraddhäya sevana sakala-sädhana-çreñöha ei païca aìga kåñëa-prema janmäya ei päìcera alpa saìga Çré Caitanya-caritämåta. cannot tolerate this. for offense to Vaiñëavas is offense to the holy name. näma-kértana. chant the holy names. we somehow disrespect or criticize them. and some of us only act as if we are following. so there is no doubt. and that is the disrespect of. On One Condition But there is one condition. We chant hari-näma. who is God Himself. and Lose the Holy Name To Surely Receive Krsna-prema sädhu-saìga. Joking and laughing. by performing these five activities one will surely receive kåñëaprema. The holy name. or offense to Vaiñëavas. 32 . This is our dilemma. hear Çrémad-Bhägavatam from the lotus mouth of a rasika Vaiñëava and serve the Deity of the Lord with faith. Madhya-lélä (22. By all means. Çréla Rüpa Gosvämé has promised. very cautious to avoid offense to Vaiñëavas. bhägavata-çravaëa mathurä-väsa.128-129) One should stay in Våndävana under the guidance of a sädhu.

We don’t see our own faults. but he did not disrespect Vaiñëavas. don’t look. like a trident. That Vaiñëava is there with a prostitute!” Regarding.The Vaisnava and the Prostitute Once. and always remembering Kåñëa. “We know everything.” The first Vaiñëava was always thinking of the fortune of the Vaiñëava living in the temple. always chanting. and he imagined. the mood of the Vaiñëava who lived near the prostitute. while that wretched person is there with that prostitute. but i am a holy person. death came to the Vaiñëava in the temple.” “Where will you take me? That other Vaiñëava is a real sädhu. and Çré Nityänanda Prabhu are 36 . He is always thinking favorably of you. Please avoid this. Don’t waste your time criticizing or trying to control everything around you. still. This is the instruction of Çréla Rüpa Gosvämé. no matter what is their caste or creed. Always remember true devotees and glorify them. do not criticize them. and also of parama-püjyapäda Çréla Bhaktivedänta Svämé Mahäräja. Badger. you may take them. i don’t want to create any problem or give you any trouble. you can say. then don’t take them. Don’t spend time thinking. my daëòavat-praëämäs. Try to serve Vaiñëavas and guru. Be very humble and hanker for bhakti so that your hearts will melt. The external situation is sufficient. remembering.Criticism Destroys Bhakti controllers. You can come and take the goods in my shop. meaning. it is best to think in this way: “i am not the controller. and engaging in devotional service. What is that process? it is explained in the third çloka: utsähän niçcayäd dhairyät tat-tat-karma-pravartanät 56 . not mad. take on this quality. and this is very harmful. Yet. (2) endeavors that are opposed to bhakti. We can remember. or memorize. be like bulls when they serve and support like fathers. (5) association with persons who are opposed to bhakti. the instructions given in the first two çlokas of Çré Upadeçämåta. they will lift you up and throw you with their horns. (3) useless mundane talks. Sometimes he may be controlled by anger. Never be like bulls when they fight with others or beat them. at other times he may become mad if anything happens against his desire. Let us be always humble and tolerant. (4) failure to adopt essential regulations or fanatical adherence to regulations. and sometimes like red bulls. and (6) greed. if you come in front of them. and humble at times. simple. and he will begin to beat anyone who comes in front of him.Harmony jana-saìgaç ca laulyaà ca ñaòbhir bhaktir vinaçyati Bhakti is destroyed by the following six kinds of faults: (1) eating too much or collecting more than necessary. i hear that many devotees are very humble sometimes. or the restlessness of the mind to adopt worthless opinions. however – a very grand process – which can control them. but it is essential that we also try to follow them. instead. Çukadeva Gosvämé entered the wide-open mouth of Vyäsadeva’s wife while she was hearing ÇrémadBhägavatam from him. it is best to make the garland of this harikaöha in your heart. you’re losing your time. and you will not be able to do bhajana. Your attention is not here. You can make garlands at night.
