Low Iodine Diet

 stands for Radioactive Iodine  It is used in nuclear medicine therapeutically and can also be seen with diagnostic scanners if it has been used therapeutically.
Your thyroid gland absorbs nearly all of the iodine in your blood. When a large enough dose of radioactive iodine (RAI), also known as I-131, is taken into the body, it can destroy the thyroid gland and any other thyroid cells (including cancer cells) that take up iodine. The radioactive iodine is usually given as a capsule or liquid. This treatment can be used to destroy any thyroid tissue not removed by surgery or to treat thyroid cancer that has spread to lymph nodes and other parts of the body.

 

A low iodine diet is prescribed before radioactive iodine (RAI) scans and radioactive iodine treatments. It is a special diet that limits the amount of iodine that is consumed through foods and beverages.
The purpose of a low-iodine diet is to deplete the body of its stores of iodine, to help increase the effectiveness of the radioactive iodine scan or treatment. The premise is that when the radioactive iodine is administered, the thyroid cells will “suck” up the iodine, because the body has been so depleted.
This list of foods below is based on the low iodine diets recommended by The National Institutes of Health and the Thyroid Cancer Survivors Association.
