ebin John James, BCA I Sem, TJC took part in the ‘App Innovation Contest’ conducted by Intel for developing applications for their new device, Ultra Book. He got through the ﬁrst round of the contest and won a pre-release Ultra Book as well as a cash reward of US $1000 for his App was chosen amongst the top 50 Apps. In addition to the rewards, Febin John James has also obtained special status as an MSP which stands for Microsoft Student Partner which enables him to represent Microsoft in various institutions. He will be trained by Microsoft after which he shall receive MSDN subscription from Microsoft which would entitle him to access softwares worth lakhs for free of cost.

A guest lecture was arranged on Nov 3, 2012 for the students of I Sem MBA. The students were addressed by Prof. Dr. Doreswamy AG summarizing an earlier talk delivered by Mr. R. Gopalakrishnan, Executive Director of Tata Sons, where he had majorly focused on the overall personality development of individuals. He emphasized on grass root level experience by quoting his own example. He gave inputs on how to be in a win-win situation with fairness in the corporate ﬁeld. It was quite an encouraging session for each and every participant.

Hosted by the Dept. of Hotel Management, the Annual Cake Mixing Ceremony was a grand success. The chief guest on the occasion was Executive Chef Girish, Ibis Hotel, Bangalore. The spirit of Christmas was personiﬁed with different types of dry fruits and nuts being mixed together along with different types of wines and spirits going into the making of the cake. The programme commenced with ﬂag hoisting by the Chief Guests Mr. Pundalika Halambi, President of Kannada Sahitya Parishat and Prof. Mallaya, Vice President of Vokkaliga Sangha, Karnataka. The chief guests addressed the students and enlightened them with inputs on how to preserve language and culture amidst the increasing cosmopolitan status of Bangalore and Karnataka. The Bioscience Department represented by Mrs. Purnima G.S along with selected students from I Sem M.Sc Biotechnology and Biochemistry took part in the 5th Annual Karnataka Science and Technology Academy (KSTA) Conference held in Dayanand Sagar Institution from Dec 19-20, 2012. The conference provided a platform for students, academicians, ofﬁcials and the entire scientiﬁc community from diverse disciplines to debate and deliberate on social change that have been brought about by science and technology.

SCREENING OF EMMA FOR II SEM BA (JEP)
Emma (2009) is a four-part BBC television drama serial adaptation based on Jane Austen’s novel Emma (1815). The novel is a comedy of self-deceit and self-discovery. It focusses on Emma as a skilled matchmaker who attempts to arrange marriage alliances of friends and acquaintances but her interference has an adverse effect when she makes Harriet Smith as her protégé. The episodes of the television drama serial were written by the acclaimed writer of BBC costume drama Sandy Welch and they were directed by Jim O’ Hanlon. In this serial, Romola Garai played the role of Emma Woodhouse, Jonny Lee Miller played the role of her friend Mr. Knightley and Michael Gambon played the role of Emma Woodhouse’s father, Mr. Woodhouse. It was screened for the students of II Sem BA (JEP) on Dec 10, 2012 by Dr. Panchali Mukherjee. The novel Emma is in their Optional English course. The response of the students was good and they enjoyed watching it.

As part of familiarizing the students and faculty on the Android platform, the Department of Computer Science and Engineering held a One Day Workshop on ‘Android App Development’ in association with Nextify, Hosur. Mr. Sujay S, Ms. Manjiri Singh and Ms. Hemalatha C of VII Sem Computer Science and Engineering, TJIT attended a three day workshop on Gaming at iCat College of Arts & Design, Bangalore. The workshop on ‘How To Create Games?’ was held on Nov 3, 2012 and started off with a brief overview of creation of games. It had a theoretical session in which the instructors showed demos of various gaming software. This was followed by a hands-on session in which the participants created a small game. The workshop gave the students an overview of how to create games and also provided an insight into current industry standards and best practices.

The Department of Computer Science celebrated Diwali on Nov 16, 2012. The celebrations started with a traditional ‘Lakshmi Puja’ and lighting of the lamp. This was followed by prasad distribution to faculty and students. Dr. S. Padmanabha, Principal TJIT also graced the occasion. Christmas Party was organized by the Department of CSE in the last week of December. The event was kick started by Senior Level Executive Mr Mukundam who briefed the students about Infosys’ core business and their marketing strategies. This was followed by talks from various members of the Infosys team like Mr. Raman Babu (IT Specialist), Mr. Sudheer Mishra from the HR department and Mr. Manoj who stressed on the need for soft skills, intelligence quotient and emotional quotient to survive and grow in the corporate world.

Under the supervision of Dr. G. Nagarajan, HOD of MBA (VTU) TJIT, an activity on ‘Creativity Management as a Team’ was conducted on Dec 3, 2012 for MBA Students. The main objective of the activity was to make the students more creative and innovative towards an assigned task and learn to coordinate better as a team. The task was on persuasive presentation using paper work and winning the audience response. All MBA students of VTU – TJIT were divided into 5 groups in which 4 groups were participants and 1 group comprised the audience. The program was organized and MBA students during the activity coordinated by Prof. A. Asif Ali and other faculty members supported the program.
LEADERSHIP QUALITIES IN PRESENT SCENARIO
Department of MBA (VTU) organized a guest lecture on Dec 10, 2012 on the topic ‘Leadership Qualities in Present Scenario’ by resource person Dr. GANESH BABU, Director of Archers and Elevators Publications Pvt. Ltd. He spoke on the leadership qualities in modern scenario. All MBA students attended the programme along with faculty members and it helped them to know about the leadership qualities that are needed which will help them in successful integration into a corporate environment.

DEMAND FORECASTING WITH GOOD PRESENTATION SKILLS WITH A COMPANY’S PRODUCT ANALYSIS
Under the supervision of Dr. G. Nagarajan, HOD of MBA (VTU) TJIT, an activity on ‘Demand Forecasting with Good Presentation Skills with Special Reference to a Product’ was conducted on Dec 19, 2012 for MBA students. The main objective of the activity was to make the students prepare a presentation as a team thereby enhancing their skills towards economical concepts, market analysis and communication and presentation skills. Students of VTU – TJIT formed into groups presented detailed analysis on products by Airtel, Pulsar, Reva, Nokia amongst others. The program was coordinated by Participants at Prof. A. INDUSTRIAL VISIT TO PARLE-G AND KSDL
Department of MBA, TJIT and TJBS visited Parle-G Company Ltd. Bangalore on Dec 21, 2012. The ﬁrst year MBA students of VTU along with faculty members were part of this visit. During the visit students were taken through different processes such as manufacturing, production, marketing, inventory and were also given a tour of the plant by Mr Reddy. Mr Reddy explained the entire process of manufacturing and answered students’ queries. On the same day, ﬁrst year MBA students of VTU visited The ﬁrst year MBA students of VTU Karnataka Soaps and Detergents Ltd. Bangalore. The at Karnataka Soaps and Detergents LTD company is situated on 42 acres of land, employs 3000

He explained the company’s business portfolio which includes soaps, sandal oil, sandal powder, perfumes and incense sticks. This was followed by a visit to the manufacturing plant where the attendees were shown the steps that go into the making of soaps and other products. Mr. Sourav Howlder from Foiwe Info Global Solutions, Mainfold, delivered a seminar on ‘Androids’ for MCA students on Nov 17, 2012. Mr. Sourav Howlder is a Sun Certiﬁed Java Programmer and has been working on Android development for 3 years. Students of III and V Sem MCA attended the seminar. The speaker dwelt on android technology, its scope and job opportunities in the next ﬁve years.

Prof. Ramalingam Narayanan joined ECE/ TCE department this academic year. He has more than 20 years of R&D experience mostly at DRDL, Hydrebad and Atomic Research Centre, Kalpakkam and around 15 years of teaching experience. He has published papers at national and international conferences and was the Professor and Dean of Academic at Sri Venkateswara College of Engineering, Tamil Nadu. M. Tech course on ‘Digital Communication and Networking’ was started in October 2012. The objective of this course is to introduce concepts of computer network technology and the principles that make it work. These will be illustrated by studying technologies used in wide area networks, metropolitan area networks and local area networks. Students will also be introduced to fundamental network protocols and how to use simple network diagnostic software tools. Ms. Electa Alice attended a week long faculty development program on ‘Digital Image Processing’ at Anna University Regional Centre, Thirunelveli, Tamil Nadu sponsored by Anna University, FDP program at Anna University Regional Centre, Tamil Nadu Chennai. Students were able to witness ﬁrsthand the various technologies and processes involved in the manufacturing of industry grade labels.

WORLD ACTIVITY RECORD - WAR ON DIABETES
Medical and surgical department of TJCN collaborated with Nova Desk to set a new world activity record declaring ‘Beat Diabetes’ on Nov 11, 2012. The event was organized with the aim to create awareness about diabetes in line with Participants of war on diabetes world diabetes day. 45 students from M.Sc, B.Sc & Pb. B.Sc had participated in the program. The event was guided by Mrs. Gladish George, Mr. Saju John, Mr. Baiju Joseph and Mr. Praveen.

Children’s Day & Childhood Diabetes Day 2012 program was conducted by Pediatric Nursing Department conducting the Department of Pediatric Nursing health awareness program on Nov 17, 2012 at the Govt. primary school, Chikkakamanahalli. Health education was given to the children regarding personal hygiene, prevention of accidents and childhood diabetes and its prevention. Small group activities and cultural program was also arranged for the children. Nearly 800 children participated in the event. The program was led by Ms. Ramalakshmi, Ms. Uma Maheshwari, Ms. Smita Mathew and Ms. Jisha Ajo.
