Editorial Exhaust
I have a new addiction. Just got back from the Performance Lapping school at Shannonville Motorsport Park, and in the four days since, I'm already trying to find a way of skipping work to feed this addiction. This was my first time on track, and I wasn't sure quite what to expect. The drizzle on Saturday didn't help, as my Kuhmo's were all but slicks. But the afternoon cleared up, and Sunday turned into a perfect day. A very big thank you is extended to the Bob Armstrong as chief instructor (and encourager), all the instructors, Ron Woltman for organization, and Cindy Armstrong and her band of course workers who gave their time to put on this fabulous event. The event started Friday afternoon with registration and scrutineering opening. Saturday's rain dampened only the track, not the spirits. I'll have a longer report for the weekend in the August issue. The MCO web site has already been updated with photos from the event; go see them! Cover Photo byPat Weightman

CASCAR Race Report

by Jim Holtom
The large crowd on hand for the CASCAR race at the legendary Mosport race circuit was treated to a spirited battle in the Canada GT Challenge Cup. In the end, Brent Gates in his Stealth B6, overcame a race-long challenge from Jim Holtom in his SCADAPack Corvette. Charles Webster finished third in his Camaro, and Klaus Bytzek finished fourth in his Porsche 911 GT1 EVO. Mark Swain captured fifth in his Ultima. Sunday dawned with clear blue skies and the promise of a perfect June day for round five of the Canada GT Challenge Cup. When the Canadian flag was waved to start the race, Gates immediately took the lead, followed by Holtom, Bytzek, Webster and Jim Beaton. Over the course of the next five laps, he opened up a gap of a few seconds, when Holtom suddenly entered the pits. "I was concerned about the motor", said Holtom. "It was running hotter than normal, and I just couldn't keep up with Brent, so we decided to take our pit stop earlier than normal. When I returned to the race, our track position was identical to that of just before the stop. We were directly behind Brent, but one lap down. Then when the first full course caution happened, I thought the gods might be smiling upon us. Brent's lead disappeared and we were once again on his tail. It became obvious that pit stop timing and strategy was going to play a major role in the outcome". After the cause of the full course caution was cleaned up (Bentley Hammer's Camaro had spun and contacted the wall between Corners 9 and 10), the race restarted and once again Brent Gates pulled out a small lead over Holtom. He then dashed into the pits for his mandatory one-minute pit stop, with Holtom inheriting the lead. But when Gates returned to the race, his car was behind Holtom's. "I don't know what happened, but for some reason our pit stop was just a few seconds longer than Jim's, which was all it took to give him the lead", said Brent after the race. I smiled when I saw that darn Stealth behind me on the track. I knew it would be tough keeping him there, but at least we had a chance. Sure enough, he kept working his way closer and closer, until all of a sudden there was a huge crash involving Brad Flower's Porsche in Corner One. With Brent filling my mirrors, I

had to thread my way through the debris, and then do creative driving to keep the Stealth behind. Under ASN Canada FIA rules, overtaking is allowed immediately after passing a yellow flag incident. This gives a big advantage to the overtaking car, because the leading driver has to slow down, find the hole through the debris, and yet keep up sufficient speed that the following car can't slingshot past. "Brent tried to pass me going up the Mario Andretti straight, but a lapped car got in the way. I was praying for the full course caution that I knew would come, but once again we had to battle through the crash zone at Corner One. When we came around Corner 5B to go up the straight, I knew my only hope was the full course caution. Brent was too close behind me and there were no cars to create traffic. Sure enough, he motored past me using the superior straight-line speed of the Stealth. Then to add insult, the full course caution happened about one second after he passed me. I knew at that point that we had lost the race". But the excitement wasn't over for the fans. Brad Flower's Porsche was removed from Corner One, but the protective tires against the concrete wall were too badly scattered to be replaced in time for the race to finish. The officials decided to display a stationary yellow flag at Corner One to prohibit any overtaking attempts. When the race restarted, Holtom pursued Gates, but by the time the pair arrived at Corner 3, a red flag was displayed and the race was over. A huge, multi-car crash had happened on the start finish straight,

starting with Gunter Schmidt's Volkswagen Beetle spinning at the exit of Corner 10. Mike Palladino's Corvette hit Gunter's Beetle. Meanwhile, Charles Webster who was running in third position a few cars back, had Klaus Bytzek glued to his rear bumper, and Jim Harrison in the front. Charlie wanted to keep his podium position, and was hard on the gas coming around Corner 10. Jim Harrison checked up to avoid the Schmidt/Palladino incident, and was heavily rear-ended by Charles, who was then heavily rear-ended by Klaus Bytzek. Charles kept going to cross the finish line, knowing that his steering was knocked askew, but unaware that his brake line had been severed. His Camaro came to a rest against the tires at Corner One, fortunately missing the bare concrete wall section created earlier by Brad Flowers' Porsche. With car parts and pieces scattered all over the start finish straight and down into Corner One, the officials wisely displayed the red flag, and the battle was over. Brent Gates had won his first race of 2001 in the Stealth B6. The ecstatic but exhausted Gates could hardly contain his excitement over the victory. Holtom was pleased with the outcome. Charles Webster stayed with his wounded Camaro and missed the podium presentation, but in the true spirit of the Canada GT Challenge Cup, his bottle of ice cold Bacardi Martini Asti was saved for him.

Main Street Racings CarQuest ProTruck Sixth Place Finish in Feature follows Pit Lane Confusion. DATE: Thursday June 21st, 2001 June 20th was another great night for racing at Capital City Speedway with seventeen ProTrucks racing the night away with the Four Cylinder Mini Stocks, Hobby Stock, Pro Stock and Four for Fun. The number of ProTrucks meant splitting the ProTrucks into 2 groups, each running one heat and the feature, instead of two heats and the feature race. The CarQuest Pro Truck driven by Ken Baird was listed in the second heat on the outside pole - great starting position. Unfortunately, race officials had a miscount and made him go to the back on the first heat. In the second heat, they made him go out in the outside pole position and then put him to the back again! Press on Regardless is most racers motto at times like this, and Ken moved up to fifth position by the end of the short heat. The Feature was a great race between the North Gower Drivers as Steve Yendall, Matt Moffitt and Ken Baird swapped positions and paint as these top drivers, all from

North Gower, raced together. Actually little paint as these are experienced drivers racing against one another in closely matched performance trucks. Ken was in the lead until his brakes began to fade two thirds of the way through the race after driving outside of Gordie Brunet for a few laps. Matt and Steve passed underneath and the three of them went at it for an exciting finish for all the North Gower fans. Great show for Fan Appreciation night, and a good showing for the North Gower drivers. New drivers in the Pro Truck Series last night were Bill Code of Pembroke and Steve Munro, a track favourite from Carp. Other North Gower Drivers Dave Watchorn and Martin Walters traded first and second positions all night in the mini-stacks. These drivers are crowd favourites, fast and fun to watch. The Four for Fun, for those who want to use their own car for a taste of racing on a real track, was the kind of fun everyone can have; with good times for fans and drivers all. Earl Wylie, our popular Hobby Stock Driver finished first in both his heats and in the top three for the feature. The Fans had his car sur-

rounded during the Appreciation track event.

Tracy Karting Driver Graham Hine Notches Up Impressive Results

By Jeff Watson
SKUSA Florida Winter Tour Champion Since being crowned SKUSA Florida Winter Tour Champion in Jacksonville on April 23rd, Paul Tracy Karting International [PTKI] driver Graham Hine of Almonte, Ontario continues to impress. SKUSA Pro Moto Tour In his first SKUSA Pro Moto Tour event on April 29th, Graham challenged the best in North America and finished fourth in the final, despite being down on horsepower on the long Jacksonville straights. Next stop is the Canadian leg of the Pro Moto Tour in the streets of Barrie ON, which runs in late June. Graham is determined to win this one too. He just needs his engine to be healthy on the day. SKUSA Regional Races Graham had an easy win at the SKUSA Liberty Region race on May 13th at Saint Lawrence Motor Sports Park and then won the SKUSA Ontario Region Mosport Grand Prix in fine style on May 27th. Adequate sponsorship is critical. Graham's schedule for the rest of the 2001 season will depend on how much sponsorship he can attract. The plan is to do well in Barrie to qualify for the World Championship in Oklahoma on September 20-23rd and to win the SKUSA Ontario Championship. "Getting more sponsorship is job number one for us now," said Colin Hine, owner of PTK Racing. "We have been fortunate to have sponsorship from Luc Romanica at Aylmer Saturn, but we will need much more to mount an effective challenge in the SKUSA competitions. It would be a shame if Graham has to curtail his ambitions for lack of money". Another priority is to partner with a top notch engine tuner," said Colin. "We have talked to a number of people and we hope to make a decision soon. Graham just has to have the horsepower and the reliability if he is to be on a level playing field with the heavily funded Americans". Quick and Controlled Graham has already proved himself as a driver to be reckoned with and more than a few heads were turned at the Mosport

Grand Prix. Toronto based karters had never heard of Graham and it surprised them to see how quick and controlled he was. In practice at Mosport, Graham was leaving a number of 125cc shifters in his dust! Three years of practice on the local tight tracks made Graham a master of the apexes. In Jacksonville it was only on the long straights where his competition was able to out drag him. For more information on Graham's progress, contact Jeff Watson at: PTK Racing - Publicity (613) 721-6263 - Phone; 726-2945 - Fax Email: jeff.watson@sympatico.ca Grahams record to date: Here is Grahams record so far this year: January 14th, Naples FLA: Florida Winter Tour Round 1 Qualified on Pole; Heat 1, 2nd; Heat 2, 2nd; Final, 3rd. February 11th, Holmstead FLA: Florida Winter Tour Round 2 Qualified 2nd; Heat 1, 2nd; Heat 2, 2nd; Final, 1st. March 4th, Ocala FLA: Florida Winter Tour Round 3 Qualified on Pole; Heat 1, 1st; Heat 2, 1st; Final, 1st.

April 1st, Gainsville FLA: Florida Winter Tour Round 4 Qualified on Pole; Heat 1, 1st; Heat 2, 1st; Final, 1st. April 23rd, Jacksonville FLA: Receives trophy as Florida Winter Tour Champion April 29th, Jacksonville FLA: SKUSA Pro Moto, Race 1 Qualified 7th; Race 1, 7th; Race 2, 5th. May 13th, Morristown NY: SKUSA, Liberty Region Race Qualified on Pole; Heat 1, 1st; Heat 2, 1st; Final, 1st. May 27th, Mosport ON: SKUSA Ontario Championship Race 1 Mosport Grand Prix Qualified 3rd; Race 1, 1st (penalised to 4th); Final, 1st.

Postscript: As the Link goes to press, Graham has just come back from the Barrie ON SKUSA Pro Moto race with a second place finish. This is a tremendous accomplishment, since he was up against the best in North America and this qualifies him for the World Chamionships.

Main Street Racings Ken Baird Instructs at Shannonville and Races Ovals at Ottawa. DATE: Thursday June 28th, 2001 MCO Lapping Weekend and Capital City Speedway Pro Truck Feature Instructing at Shannonville Motorsports Park and CarQuest ProTruck #2 and Main Street Racings Ken Baird - 2nd in the Heat and Sixth for the Feature adds to the Seasons points moving Ken up in the Standings. Main Street Racings Ken Baird had a great time instructing prospective racecar drivers last weekend. This included North Gowers own Jenni Armstrong, who by the end of the weekend was showing all the others what a seventeen year old girl could do with her Dads RaceCar and a bit of Kens and others instruction. The Motorsports Club of Ottawa (www.mco.org) holds the MCO Lapping Weekend each year. This year it was at Shannonville Motorsports Park near Belleville last weekend, a road race track designed for technical expertise. A Lapping Weekend is a chance for all who want to learn how to drive on a real race track to do so with qualified instructors, track work-

ers and safety personnel, in their own cars. Bob Armstrong of North Gower was Chief Instructor this year and did a great job. Thanks to all, especially all the volunteers that make the weekend affordable; it was a great success. Kens next MCO event is Pace Car Driver at the Canaska Cup - Everyone welcome - Shannonville Motorsports Park July 7th & 8th. Wednesday, the rains never came and we had a good nights racing at Capital City Speedway with sixteen ProTrucks along with the Four Cylinder Mini Stocks, Mini-Legend, Pro Stock and Four for Fun. The CarQuest Pro Truck driven by Ken Baird was second in the Heat Race. The Feature gave him a Sixth Place finish, adding to the points total for the season. Jason Shipclark won the Feature, followed by Tim Kirby, Steve Yendall, Shaun Quinn, Dan Yeas and Ken Baird. All the North Gower drivers did well, as usual. Steve Yendall did particularly well, Dave Watchorn and Martin Walter were a treat to watch as they moved from the back of the pack to the front. Matt Moffitt solved a problem with his car and is looking for a top three finish next Wednesday, July 4th. The Totally Silly Drive

by Jim Morrow
On June 9, the MCO Rally Group kicked off their 2001 rally season with a school, followed by an evening rally that ran for 132 km. Twelve students attended the classroom session, during which we reviewed the rules and regulations, safety considerations, checkpoint protocols, and the basics of drivex navigation and timing. Several workers brought their rally-equipped vehicles, including the noisy black Impreza 2.5RS. We demonstrated lights, rally computers and the various paraphernalia that every rally team needs to get the job done. Registration for the rally began at 7:15 p.m. at the Harvey's on Carling Avenue, with a drivers' meeting at 7:45 p.m. The mythical Car 0 left at 8:00 p.m., en route to 10 checkpoints. As befits a rally designed for beginners, roads and instructions were designed to be simple, with an occasional main-road navigation thrown in to test the teams' understanding. Eight teams registered; of those, one was from Quebec and five teams were first-

timers - as were most of the marshals doing checkpoint duty. The participants said they enjoyed themselves and wanted to know when the MCO was planning the next rally. Several newcomers offered to help organizers with upcoming events. Overall, we made a great advance for building an interest in rallying and bringing it back to Ottawa. Stay tuned: we are aiming for a slightly more complex rally in late July or early August. If you're interested in working on performance rallies and getting up close and personal with the big dogs, contact me and I'll connect you up with the appropriate people. Until next month....

two-day Advanced Driving School weekend. The feedback has been for the most part positive and rewarding. I feel, and I think I echo the feeling of most everyone involved, the weekend was one of the most successful Driving/Lapping events ever. There were errors and omissions easily corrected for the future - but some 80 individuals left SMP as better drivers. That is comforting. There are many people to thank. All of the instructors, who gave so willingly of their time, experience patience and good humour. I tried to thank each and every one of you following the event, and if I missed, believe me, I shall do so. The workers: Steve, Basil, Bennett, Herb, Bev, Matt, Rick, Bob M, Dave, John, Chris, Richard, Jim, Mike, Rob, and all the people who helped out on the day. THANKS. And, last but not least, Bob and Cindy Armstrong. Bob in the role as Chief Instructor - my compliments for a job well done; Cindy - as Chief Steward, but as we all know, much more than thatwell done et merci. I enjoyed the weekend. I found it very gratifying. We had a great team. - rpw

Book Review
by Rob Microys
Competition Car Suspension: Design, Construction, Tuning by Allan Staniforth
This book has been written in a very easy to read style. Provides great insight on past and current suspension designs used in competition cars from the productionracing sedan, to IMSA GTP, Lemans Prototypes and Formula 1 racecars. The book is very progressive in nature starting with the most fundamental topics, covering the different types of technology used in racing cars throughout the history of Man's fascination about cars and driving fast. The first half of the book concentrates on the various types of suspension architectures, technologies, geometries, springs, shocks, swaybars, bump rubbers, and methods of making a car handle even going in to detail on Lotus' Active suspension which was the first of the amazing high-tech Formula 1 suspension systems to hit the scene. The remainder of the book gets technical, detailing shocks and springs with good detail - and also recommends additional reading for those people who really want to get in to the nitty gritty of shock technology and understanding racing suspensions. The book is quite current, being published in 1999. It details many manufacturers' racing shocks, including racing Koni and Penske shocks. The book goes so far as to provide one with a detailed set of mathematical formulae to help calculate just about every suspension parameter you could imagine, wheel rates, spring rates, weight transfer, all based on the corner weights of the car and a few basic parameters which are chosen such as the harmonic rate of your front and rear suspension. If for any other purpose, I would recommend reading this book to understand weight transfer,

as this book really does a great job demystifying this very misunderstood topic. This is a great educational book, as well as an excellent reference on suspension design. The best I have read yet. As a club racer building a car, I have found many 'tid-bits' of information out there in all sorts of other books which are needed to choose components and design a suspension properly. This book has almost all of that information in it, all in one place. It provides enough detail to help chose the proper components including the required mathematics to help chose effective spring rates based on the car & design of its suspension. This is a worthy addition to anybody's motor sports library regardless if you are simply a technically inclined spectator, a crewmember, a team owner or driver. Beyond what the book has, I would also recommend reading some of the technical documentation on Penske shocks at http://www.penskeshocks.com/. You'll be amazed at the technology in a racing shock these days. Happy reading!
