Procedure A. Preparatory Activities Review Review the past lessons on adverbs of time, manner and place. Motivation From the basket, let one pupil take out a word. Read it and paste it on the board. Another pupil will use it in a sentence. B. Development of the Lesson Presentation Present the following adverbs using a T-chart. Adverbs of Manner thoroughly quickly gently cheerfully smoothly gracefully orderly Adverb of Frequency always seldom after never everyday occasionally rarely daily already yet

Analysis and Discussion Let the pupils use each adverb above in their own sentences. Ask: What is an adverb of manner? • An adverb of manner is a word that modifies a verb, an adjective and another adverb. It tells how an action is done. Generally, adverbs of manner make use of –ly that is added to an adjective. Rules: • If an adjective ends in l, keep the l and add –ly. example: casual – casually global – globally

• If the adjective ends in y with a consonant before it, change y to i and add –ly. example: busy – busily ready – readily Ask: What is the adverb of frequency? Answer: An adverb of frequency tells how often an action is done. Generalization 1. An adverb is a word that modifies a verb, an adjective or another adverb. 2. Adverbs may indicate frequency and manner. 3. An adverb of manner tells how an action is done while an adverb of frequency tells how often an action is done. C. Post Activities Application Dyad Look for a partner. Answer the following questions in complete sentences. One will ask the questions while the other will answer and vice versa. Then take turn. 1. How would you ask something from the sales clerk? 2. How should you buy things? 3. How should we write if we want others to read our writing? 4. How should we study if we want to get good grades?

5. How should we apologize if we want the person to forgive us? Enrichment Read each sentence and identify the adverb. If you become successful in the future how would you treat other people? As young boys and girls, how do you show humility? Have you been tempted to act as proudly as the king in our story? What happened as a result of your pride? What did you do? Why?

Generalization Read the story. Pick out the adverbs of manner and frequency. Use them in your own sentences. The Proud King There was once a king who ruled harshly over the lands. One night after he was crowned as emperor, he thought of himself as the greatest on earth and in heaven. He often went hunting. Early morning, while in the deep woods, he swam to cool himself in the lake. He proudly swam away from the shore. Suddenly there came from the bottom of the lake someone who had the same face and form as he. This man quickly put on the king’s clothes and drove away with the king’s horse. When the proud king finished cooling himself he found his clothes and his horse already gone. With some woven reeds covering his body, he walked to the castle. He beat loudly at the gate but he was driven away. He went to the duke’s hall but he was put to prison. Working hard, he loosened the chains that bound his feet and fled away. He went to his own palace but no one recognized him. Instead, he was beaten up and was thrown outside the palace. The proud king fled away. He wished he was dead. Reaching the lake where he had bathed, he cried aloud. He asked forgiveness for his pride. IV. Evaluation Write an adverb in the blank to make each sentence correct. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. V.
